Well, The Denver Post did not update today, so fans of the Denver Broncos have had limited sources for information and entertainment.
Have no fear, the one sliver of news that has slipped to our thirsty lips is that Washington Huskies quarterback Jake Locker will have a private workout of the Tennessee Titans, Minnesota Vikings and the Broncos.
Hundreds, maybe even thousands of Tim Tebow Denver fans (especially BroncoTalk’s own Jon) immediately screamed/wondered allowed WHY?
Andrew Mason of MaxDenver pointed to the ever present smoke screen factor. Yet, I don’t see how anyone in the NFL could possibly see this as a smoke screen.
The Broncos have yet to show any type of significant support of any of the three quarterbacks on their roster. Kyle Orton got the old if the season started today he’d be our starter… treatment. It’s been said that Tim Tebow still has a lot to work on to be a starting quarterback in the NFL and head coach John Fox even said that he was, ‘excited’ to see Brady Quinn.
So there’s that.
Come on fans of the Broncos, the only thing you can ever know is that you know nothing. I’m not saying that Denver is actually interested in Locker, but then again from what I’ve seen I can’t imagine anybody being interested in Locker. Yet, at the end of April… Someone will have drafted him.
So smoke screen or not, Locker will sit down with the (original) Mile High Messiah John Elway and that man will make a decision and have one third input on draft day. Denver could easily bundle two second round draft picks or a second and a third to trade up into the first or use their first to trade back and gather something else… There’s no team in the NFL that’s worried about the Broncos picking Locker at number two overall. That’s for sure.
With players having no value as currency in this year’s draft, the only thing teams will be able to trade is other draft picks and Denver has four in the first three rounds.
The new regime isn’t so much different than the old regime, but the audacity is turned down. No longer do fans have a Josh McDaniels stating that no one on the roster’s position is safe. The team will just show that by their actions.
UPDATE:
John Elway has spoken via Twitter, not directly on this, but on the Broncos philosophy on the incoming rookie class, “Our philosophy is to look at as many players as possible who are on our draft board. Important to be thorough at every position. We’ve got several Pro Day visits coming up, including Missouri’s on Thursday.”
I can’t imagine that any of these three men want their time wasted, there is definitely at least some type of interest on the part of Denver. It will often be pointed out that Mike Shanahan didn’t have a private workout with Jay Cutler, nor did McDaniels with Tebow, but Tebow and McDaniels did have meetings and Shanahan would have had a full on mutiny on his hands if the 13-3 Broncos coming off an AFC Championship game loss were looking at quarterbacks. Shanahan had let Jake Plummer run the asylum before and continues to to this day now with Donovan McNabb.
