NFL Combine Football

On Tuesday, LSU cornerback and 2011 NFL Draft prospect Patrick Peterson said he would love to play alongside fellow cornerback Champ Bailey in Denver.

The quote came on the same day Broncos Head Coach John Fox essentially guaranteed that the team would be playing in a championship very soon and ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter speculated that Denver could be a candidate to land Tiki Barber.

“That would be wonderful to go there and help a veteran get over the hump and get a championship,” said Peterson.  “Champ has been in the game a long time and he’s thirsty to win a championship. I would be more than happy to line up beside him and achieve that goal that he wants and that I want as well.”

Alabama defensive tackle Marcell Dareus has emerged as a favorite to be taken second overall, but it wouldn’t be shocking to see the Broncos select Auburn’s Nick Fairley, Clemson’s Da’Quan Bowers, Texas A&M’s Von Miller or Peterson come April.

The kid is saying all the right things, there isn’t a draft expert or scout out there who isn’t very high on Peterson, him and Bailey would instantly form one of the best cornerback tandems in the NFL if they do get a chance to play together.

  • CJ

i know there is more demanding needs at D line.

But Peterson is a once in a decade talent

I would be happy with this pick. Or Basically any defense LMAO

  • 5280

Peterson is very tempting, but the heart and sole of a Defence is the Dline. Dareus is my top favorite, followed by Von Miller. I like miller a lot because he was a DE in college and they experimented with him in the senior bowl at LB and he looked amazing, like he's been doing it his whole college career. he can line p as end a rush the QB as good as any body, he can drop back into coverage and has the speed to keep up with TE and Slots, and he can step up and go side to side to stop the run because he's fast and cant really tackle. Von miller is just too dynamic to pass up, especially with us switching to a 4-3 we can use him pretty much anywhere and gain instant flexability. I just dont think a corner is gonna help us without a pass rush. Dareus had an awsome combine and ran very well for his size. i'm not into bowers or fairly. the whole one year wonder thing has got me thinkin they're pretty suspect.

  • 5280

i mean he CAN really tackle. my bad. lot a typos:-)

  • mikebirty

I want a guy who will be able to play on the defense NOW and make it better.

I'd like Peterson but the more I look at draft prospects and scouting reports the more I realise I don't really care who is picked or what position they play – I just hope the Johns and X pick someone who can make the defense better NOW!

  • MrEast

Miller was both a DE one year and an OLB the next. He did very well at both positions.

  • roshon2411

I was skeptical of picking Peterson with the #2 pick…but I'm starting to come around. He looks like a freak, and was a combine stud. But so were Mamula, Gholston, Matt Jones, and Heyward-Bey.

Plus we know that having the best CB in the game doesn't help make a defense any better.

I wouldn't be disappointed if Denver takes Peterson at #2, but still think it's too high for a DB and would rather see them trade down and get multiple picks. I too, like Von Miller, and think he would be a better choice.

Denver's D hasn't been the same since Al Wilson was let go. Though Miller would most likely play outside, key leadership at LB's spots is needed.

Maybe Greg Jones or Martez Wilson in the 2nd Rd?

Either way too many needs to be disappointed with any pick. The only way I'll be disappointed is if, Orton is still on this team come August.

5 wins last 22 starts…he's a bum. Time to move on.

  • MrEast

I like Miller, but he just looks like more a 3-4 kind of guy. The way I see it is that Denver has so many needs that almost any pick would be an upgrade.

  • dogheadbrew

Drafting talent = long-term success. Draft the BEST football player available.

  • The Mascot Army

Peterson is the least bust-prone of the bunch, and seems really mature.

  • LarryB

“Plus we know that having the best CB in the game doesn't help make a defense any better.”

Now, you didn't really mean that, did you?

Oh by the way, Orton will be starting . . .

  • roshon2411

Yeah I meant it… having a stud CB, like Bailey, didn't help Denver's D. Most of the time, Bailey shut down the whole half of the field. Didn't matter, because all it did was expose the other CB(ie Dre Bly). A CB is about as important to a defense as a WR is to the offense. That is why you rarely see either a WR or CB taken in the top 5.

As for Orton starting…hopefully it's with another team!

  • flbronc

if a qb goes number one- i think we can trade our number two pick. reason being, someone else who needs a qb is going to have to jump buffalo and arizona (and maybe even cincy) to get one of the premier guys. if we could trade down and stay in the top part of the draft- and that is a big if- then i would do it and take my chances that one of the three guy's i'd like to see as a bronco is still there- peterson, fairly and dareus.

if we can't trade, i'd be ok with a peterson pick.

  • crazykid

in this case, bet defensive talent

  • crazykid

unfortunately, there really are no top flight QB's this year. Cam Newton is falling to the same fate as Tebow, with his stock dropping. People are starting to realize that maybe Gabbert isnt a good as they thought he was, and the other QB's are late-first early second round material.

Maybe we could trade back in the second round instead and pick up picks that way too

  • CJ

I say if we trade down you gotta stay in the top 10. I would be glad with every top defensive prospect except FAIRLEY. He seems to Albert Haynesworthy?? To much of a chance of being a bust

  • flbronc

i wouldnt draft newton… but other teams might. all it takes is one. the fact that there are only a couple of highly rated prospects helps us with trade value for the spot. even if a qb doesnt go at one, someone may still want to move ahead of the bills and cards to get their guy.

personally i dont think i would trade the second rounders… we can get quality dl prosepcts early in the second- regardless of who we draft in the first.

  • flbronc

i think bowers has much higher bust potential. fairly will be just fine in the nfl. he played against much better ol's in the sec then bowers did in the acc and did very well.

  • CJ

I dont think you should ever have 2 question a mans character with the number 2 overall pick. Thats just me

  • 5280

Super star CB''s are worthless without a pass rush. as good as peterson is he wont help much unless the front seven can get a rush on the QB hands down. I think Dareus will be the pick becasue he's showed so far that he's the best DT in the draft and denver's gonna be looking for a DT, but not taking von miller just makes me nervous because he's as about as sure of a pick as peterson. they both will no dout probaby be superstars at the NFL level.

  • MrEast

Cam Newton isn't really falling, many people still believe he will go first overall. There isn't any top flight players in this draft outside of Peterson to be honest. Therefore the though process is, “If I'm going to risk my top pick, I might as well risk it at the most important position.” This also applies to Blaine Gabbert as well.

  • MrEast

That's nice and all, but drafting a bust of a pass rusher won't help at all either. Then we'll be doomed to watch Peterson go to pro bowl after pro bowl as our DeWayne Robertson just pittle farts around the field.

  • Biggers_Brandon

Drafting Petererson fills 2 huge needs: CB and return specialist. I'm a fan of both Dareus and Fairley, but they only fill one need. Why not draft someone that fills 2 holes? This draft is deep at DT, there will be options in the 2nd round that should be able to step in and play now.

  • wyrob

with 2 shut-down corners, and no clear starters on the interior of the D-line,
I can see a lot of teams running up the middle on us, all game long.

  • wyrob

sydquan, royal, cox…not exactly a gaping hole in the return game.

  • Hnw1058

It all starts with the PASS RUSH. If you can't pressure the QB your going to have problems! Dareus gets my vote.

  • 81Denvernative

I too am very tired of seeing people run all over us week after week but I think long term we would be much better off drafting a talent like Peterson and addressing DL later in the draft. Let us not forget this is a deep DL draft and good players can be found in rounds other than the first. We for instance drafted Doom 126th in the 4th round.

  • crazykid

Dude, im pretty sure that two shutdown CB's will do the job. And if Cox wins the trial and Syd makes the team (I'm the biggest Syd fan ever, so i'm praying he does) no one can pass on us. And we can pick up Stephen Paea (49 225 reps) in the 2nd

  • Bschmidt99

Why don't the broncos pick Marcell Dareus with the second overall pick and trade Kyle Orton, The two second round picks, and maybe a sixth round pick for the 3rd or 4th pick because both the bills and Bengals are in need of a quarterback and are both interested in a veteran quarterback and Orton's numbers just look really good for either one of those teams to pass up on him. Then you would pick up Peterson and get that one of a kind talent along side with Bailey plus get a fix for the D-line. This would also depend if John Elway actually see's Tebow as the future QB of Denver which I of course do. It would also make the defense younger like john fox said he wanted.

  • Junior

Draft Peterson! Why? Well first we switched back to the 4-3 and we moved dumervil and ayers to DE. So better pressure at QB and stoping the run(on outside) but if they run inside we now have Joe mays and those couple games he played I loved him so he'll stop the run on the inside if the DT can't(and we could get some in the draft or FA)

Another reason why to draft him is because he Is the best player in the draft! Also why I believe we should is because Andre goodman keeps getting injured and Im pretty sure perrish cox is going to jail and thompson is better in nickel formation.

still not convinced? Well if we draft him he'll learn under Bailey and we'll have two shut down corners and Peterson is a scary motherf**ker at his size and probably be or will be the best tackling corner in the league..there's no doubt in my mind that he'll help us improve our defense in the pass and run

I'll be sad if we don't draft him but oh well it's not my decision

  • flbronc

very true. if one goes first, it only makes our spot more valuable for someone who wants to grab the other before buffalo.

  • flbronc

dont forget thomas- for the 20% of games he is available.

  • flbronc

in a year that we don't need so much i can see thinking about that. but i think we will end up with three starters from our first three picks… maybe even our first four. while i like the potential of having two picks turn into dareus and peterson, i'd like to keep all the draft picks we have. plus that will get really expensive signing two top five picks (depending on the cba of course).

  • Bschmidt99

I just see us getting a lot more talent and production out of Peterson, and Dareus then we can get with the two second rounders.

  • CJ

Elways already said that we cant miss with this 2nd pick. Every expert seems 2 think that whoever drafts peterson will have the best draft. i dont see how that is a bad thing

  • anthony33

On a seperate, but similar note, it sure does look like whatever Parrish Cox did is ugly. This pre-trial hearing or I should say lack of, really makes you wonder. They waived their right to hear the evidence against them to avoid it. Man.

  • Bschmidt99

plus most top defensive teams are based on star players not 2nd round players who will just be okay. Which we may get lucky and one of them turns out to be really good but I would rather be for sure and have someone that would start this and give us good production this year I really believe if we get these two with this trade that we would be easily moving from worst defense in the league to a top ten defense. If you consider all the players on line you have Ayers, Dareus, and Dumerviel, and in the line backer position you have D.J. plus in the db you have two of the two top corners and probably the best corner back duo in the league with Bailey and Peterson to where we would just shutdown any team and their wide receivers plus you cant forget Brian Dawkins. With the just the veterans of Dawkins and Bailey just imagine how much Peterson would learn and how much better he will plus then it wouldnt be as bad once Champ retires. If anything I say we draft Peterson because this a deep class for DT and Peterson is just to good to pass up on.

  • CJ

Champ Bailey ran a 4.28 40 time coming out of college.

Now that's impressive. Although he doesn't have the size of Peterson. but he had a step on him back in the day.

  • Orangecrush831

im all for Peterson!! i think having CHAMP and Peterson will buy us some time to get sacks(coverage sacks). back in the first 6 games of the 09 season a lot of our sacks came because CHAMP, Goodman, DAWK, and Hill were playing exceptional. besides this draft if FILLED with DLine talent, not much on PLAYMAKING ability. I also LOVE Petersons swagger. Hes confident, and that'll just rub off on the rest of the defense. Think Tebows leadership but on DEFENSE!! just my oppinion. GO BRONCOS!!!

  • Roy

Peterson is a rare talent combining size, speed, and production. I think we would be foolish not to draft him, especially considering how deep the d-line talent is this year. He has been called the safest pick, and we can't afford to miss with our draft this year.

  • 5280

ya very tough decision but the ames depth at DL that you guys mention at DL in the draft is also there at CB. guys like shareece wright, brandon harris, jimmy smith(from CO), raheem more, jalil brown(also from CO), marcus gilchrest, buster Skrine(who ran a 4.29 40), devon house, kendrick burney, arron williams and so on and soon. shilo keo looked EXTREMELY impressive at the combine. theres some good depth at LB as well. I'm sure casey mathews, akeen ayers, will be there in the 2nd round. martes wilson might even be there. and if we can pick up a LB thats 6'4 250-260 lbs and run a 4.44 4o like wilson does, i would think that would be a great deal. Instead os taking peterson at #2 or trading up and still only having that one 1st round pick, i think it would be smarter to take dareus at #2, trade up in back into the 1st and get a shot at another top DL(ryan carrigan, Roboert quin, even sam acho would be a good pick up), then pick up a few quality LB's or CB's in the later rounds. if denver picks up 2 for sure starting DL's in the 1st round(and there are plenty),then they could pick up raw talented CB's later and with Dennis Allen as the DC, who was instrumental in forming the secondary the saints have that won a super bowl and had the most take aways in the NFL that year, IMO denver should be able to develop those young raw talented CB's. They might not be as gifted as peterson, or rather, as pro ready as him, but they have all the raw materials to be coached up (especially with bailey staying to help teach) and made into good quality starting CB's in the league. I mean shilo keo looked straight steller in his back pedaling and catching drills, and buster skrine was damn near the fastest man in the draft. denver can get some real steals if their coaching staff steps up to the challenge. plaus by the time they become starters dareus, doom, and ayers(plus whoever our other 1st round DT might be if it pans out that way) could finally have an elite pass rush which will enable those young CB's to play off a lil bit. Bottom line is the front seven is the most important aspect of defence and should be addressed first and there are so many talented players in this draft that denver could figure out how to menuver on the board, get an effective, starting line up of DL's, pick up whatever else they need to round out the D, and still not have to take peterson simply because he's the best player on the board. Denver could miss out on more if they just take peterson at #2.

  • 81Denvernative

If Dareus goes #1 to Carolina, Do we then take Peterson at #2? As the days go on I am being more and more impressed and excited about this kid. Very confident but not cocky. I think regardless we should take Peterson unless Carolina does which would be shocking.

  • Paradisimo

Yeah I have a feeling Cox has played his last game for the Broncos.

  • anthony33

Since BT seems to be asleep, I'll go ahead and start.

If what we are reading about what the owners put on the table is true. And if the players, or at least their representation, decided that wasn't good enough and decided take it to court instead, then I say I hope the players get their collective asses kicked. They never had ANY intent other than to decertify… period, end of discussion.

I was pretty much on the fence for most of this sham, but now, if what I am reading is true, then screw the NFLPA and all their members.

  • 5280

anthony you must not have read about what the league already did to the players over the T.v cantracts. the league restructure its TV deals 2 years ago without notifieing the player and restructured them in a way specificly to leave the union out, even though its written in the current CBA that they have to include the union in all decisions pertainting to revenue. in all of the new contracts agreed upon by the networks and the league, theres is a “lockout” clause within them that either requires the league to payback the network in case of a lockout, but most of them have clauses that pay the league incase of a lock out, mainly direct TV and ESPN. ESPN tryed to get out of their lockout clause but was told by the league that they'ed have to pay a heavey fine. Direct TV told the league they'd pay them MORE if they DID go into a lock out. all and all, the league has made $4 billion dollars off of those contracts and hasn't splitt any of it with the players and has been stashing it specifically because they planned on a lockout when they structured them. A district court judge has ruled in favor of the player saying that the league purposly tryed to save this money because they planned on locking out the players anyway, regardless of what they want. This is why the union is decertifying because they already have the backing of a judge and could getwhat they're looking for within a new CAB because of the unfair practices of the league. How could you not see the league as greedy selfish crooked pipgs for what they tryed to do? the players are greedy no dout. but at least they've been honest.

  • anthony33

5280 – Don't want to get into an argument on this and I do agree it's all greed. However, what the owners ended up putting on the table looks more than fair to me. The owners, like anyone else in business, have to manage their business well or they will go out of business. Look around at all the large and small business that have gone under. Some of those were good businesses for a very long time, like Borders and Block Buster, but did not innovate, did not manage correctly and poof, there gone or drastically reduced.

My point is the owners are managing a business and I believe they have the right to run it as the see fit as long as it is legal. They are competing against all the other professional sports including NASCAR or any other competition going after our dollar. They are also all in it for the long haul.

The players are the elite of the elite and deserve to be well compensated, but they are still the employees that have no money in the business or the risk associated with it.

I don't care what happened with the TV deal. If the owners negotiated a better deal with the networks then so be it. Did the players negotiate that deal? Have the players done anything to bring more dollars to the pie? It was a fair offer, damn the players.

  • 5280

the employees of a business have to be treated right or there is no business. how you sell something with no product. Also to keep a product you have to market it. planning to not have a season just because you covered youor own rear end and your getting payed doesn't help market the product your trying to sell. not only will they lose the players but they'll lose the fans, the people who pay everyone involoved. and when your the owner of a business and you've signed documentation set forth by law that binds you to a commitment then thats what you have to do regardless of your business. they owners signed on the dotted line to involve the player in all aspects of business having to do with revenue and they did it under a court of law which makes them wrong for going behinf the unions back and violating that conract. and what did they offer that the players asked for. the players asked for the league to open all of their books, especially because the league had gotten caught breaking the rules of the CBA, and the league said they only open a portion of them and their excuse for not showing all of their financial income is because they've offered more then the owners get to see. the players wanted a 50/50 split of the $9 BILLION revenue they pull annually. they league said they'd split it but didnt specify into what portions. and to promise to put $82 million dollars into the retired players fund is outragous when you take into account 1)the type of injuries player deal with and 2) the size of the revenue the NFL pulls in. they said really nothin of the rookie salary cap. so how is the deal fair when you look at what the players want? even if it is their business and the though is that they can run it however they want, there are still laws in place to protect their employees, especially within a union, and one in particular that was written in the CBA was broken. if its their business fine, but they wont get very far with it unless the respect their employees and treat them right. the proof is that their business is being put on hold now because the players cant play unless they get what they see as fair to them. no employees, no business.

  • anthony33

The players have a great deal on the table, covered everything they wanted except opening the books and they turned it down. The owners are paying them very well, negotiated on all counts and came up with a proposal the looks more than fair to me. The players are not business partners… they have no right to see the books.

  • anthony33

    5280
I respect your opinion, I just see it a different way and completely disagree.

  • Roy

The league did agree to open its books. From Peter King – “
NFL offered the players to have an independent auditor — to be determined by both sides — study the audited financial statements”

  • flbronc

i have to agree with anthony… i think the players intended this all along. they have a court case that is going to a court that has already shown favoritism toward the players. they have nothing to loose and everything to gain in this deal… i think they extended for show, hoping to win the battle of the press (which ultimately they will- because they have all the big names on the lawsuit).
