The Denver Broncos announced Monday that the club’s Southwest area college football scout, Cornell Green, has been named the AFC Scout Of The Year by the Fritz Pollard Alliance (FPA).

Green was a defensive back with the Dallas Cowboys for several years before becoming a scout for the NFL.  For the past 32 years (25 of them with the Broncos), he has evaluated college talent successfully.

“Cornell’s track record of success as both a player and talent evaluator in the NFL is a unique combination,” Broncos General Manager Brian Xanders said. “And we’re fortunate to have him with the Denver Broncos.”

The FPA was organized for the purposes of promoting diversity and equality of job opportunity in the coaching, front office and scouting staffs of National Football League teams.

Press Release after the jump.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Longtime Denver Broncos college scout Cornell Green has been named AFC Scout of the Year by the Fritz Pollard Alliance, the team announced on Monday.

Entering his 25th year scouting for the Broncos and 32nd year evaluating talent in the NFL, Green will be honored by the Fritz Pollard Alliance on Friday, Feb. 25, at its awards reception at the Marriott Downtown Indianapolis. He will be recognized by the FPA along with NFC Scout of the Year Bob Harrison of the Atlanta Falcons.

“Cornell is a vital part of our scouting department, and I’m thrilled that the Fritz Pollard Alliance is honoring him with this prestigious award,” Broncos General Manager Brian Xanders said. “He is a winner who brings vast experience and wisdom to our scouting process.

Responsible for scouting the Southwest area, Green also has served as a scouting consultant for the Broncos after evaluating the South, East and Midwest regions earlier in his career with the club. A five-time Pro Bowl selection as a defensive back for the Dallas Cowboys from 1962-74, Green began his scouting career with the Cowboys in 1970 while still an active player.

Green never missed a game during his 13 seasons with the Cowboys, compiling a 145-game consecutive starts streak while helping the team to eight consecutive playoff appearances, including back-to-back Super Bowl berths from 1970-71. He helped Dallas to a victory in Super Bowl VI during the 1971 season.

Named the 10th-best undrafted player of all-time by NFL.com, Green did not play football at Utah State University but was a two-time All-American in basketball for the school. He is the younger brother of Pumpsie Green, who was the first African-American player on the Boston Red Sox, the final Major League Baseball team to integrate.

Green was a great basketball player in college. IMO, he should be in the Cowboys Ring of Honor but for some reason, he is a forgotten hero among Cowboy faithful.

Congrats to my close friend, Cornell Green, with whom I lost contact many years back.  If anyone knows how to contact, Cornell, please let me know.  He would be PLEASED to know I still talk him up, just like we did together in St. Louis in the 1970s.  Thanks, Cornell, for many fine memories.  Jabberwaukie
