Sometimes, a bye week is just what the doctor ordered.

That seemed to be the case in Denver on Sunday, as the Denver Broncos came off their bye week to put a 49-29 drubbing on the division-leading Kansas City Chiefs at home.

Quarterback Kyle Orton threw for a career-high four touchdowns. Tim Tebow ran in his third of the season (tying Marlin Briscoe for most rushing TDs by a rookie QB in Broncos history) while throwing for his first. RB Knowshon Moreno rushed for over 100 yards for the first time in his career, and LB Mario Haggan notched a career-high three sacks.

The Broncos got the ball rolling the first quarter and never relented. They enjoyed a 35-point lead late into the second quarter before allowing Kansas City to score its first points.

The team’s 49 points marks the second highest point total in franchise history (50 in 1963).

With the win, the Broncos move to 3-6 on the season, down two games to the 5-4 Oakland Raiders and 5-4 Chiefs. They face the 4-5 San Diego Chargers in San Diego next week.

So, what say ye Broncos fans — are the Broncos back? Do they have a shot at the division this year?

  • http://twitter.com/dxmanning Joshua Manning

If they beat SD, then yep.

  • http://twitter.com/dxmanning Joshua Manning

Anybody wanted Josh McD fired last week PLEASE SHUT UP!!!!! McD is a WINNER!!!

  • areferee

Mathematically, yes, but realistically, no. The defense gave up too many points and too many yards. Were it not for an exceptional game by the offense, there are clearly struggles showing in the games ahead.

A satisfying win, but a long way from salvation.

  • Vince_marine

Great comment Josh! I think the team is back. Today was just a glimpse of what this team is capable of when healthy. The division is within reach and I believe they can win it. GO BRONCOS!

  • areferee

    Special note to (dee):

That wasn't an attempt at humor, but irony.

The continued silence from the ownership is a clear indication of a deep problem in public perception. There truly seems to be a problem within the organization that goes well beyond public relations.

The owners health should be addressed publicly and to some depth. There is much at stake beyond him and his family. There are thousands with a vested interest, most of whom care very deeply.

Are you people insane??? Im a Broncos fan. Lets get real here. Look at this roster. Look at our record. We stink!!! The Bills won today. Do you think they are a good team too??? I dont care if we win the rest of our games. This roster is trash. Xanders has to be fired. The goal is to win the Super Bowl. Not making the playoffs. We eat the Chiefs at home. So what. Stop drinking the Kool Aid. Im from NY and people on this blog sound like Chicago Cubs fans. We should expect and demand more. Im a Broncos fan and im pissed. You should be too.

  • kerry

yeah that career 11-14 head coaching record proves that. FAIL!

  • crazykid

You are very right, but also remember we were playing more inexperienced players at the end (in garbage time) which may have inflated the stats and scores a little…

  • kerry

wow. the never ending flow of kool-aid continues to seep and pour from here. a win against an overrated Chiefs team and we are suddenly back? HAHAHAHAHAAHA. come on guys. we didnt exactly beat the Pittsburgh Steelers or Atlanta Falcons out there today. we have San Diego next. we win that……then we will talk if Oakland loses next week as well.

  • kerry

hey it only took Moreno a year and a half to get to 100 yards in one game.

  • http://www.moveonscientist.wordpress.com/ Zebtron A. Rama

I think we just had a key victory, a great beginning to what needs to be an exceptional second half of the season. Next Monday is BIG. Happy B-Day Orton!

  • crazykid

    haha i forgot about Orton's birthday. What a presesnt…4 TD's, 0 INT's and a blowout home win to the 1st place Chiefs.

  • Ejrubin

wow, all of you talking smack after a win like this need to chill out. We all need to remember a number of things: 1. We do not have our best defensive player for the entire season. (you can argue otherwise but last year he was) 2. We lost our second best pass rusher (Ayers) for a long period of time. 3. We have the youngest offensive line in the league and they weren't even fully healthy until today. They need to get experience together and gel, but a line of Clady, Beadles, Walton, Kuper, and Harris has the potential to be very very good for years to come. 4. What Mcdaniels has done with Orton is nothing short of spectacular. The guy is on pace for a 5,000 yard season with 30 tds and less than 10 interceptions. He clearly knows what hes doing there. 5. How can you not love the offensive potential that we have. We have 5 young linemen that could all potentially be very good. We have Demaryius, Eddie, Gaffney, and Lloyd at the WR position, not to even mention young guys like Eric Decker who don;t evenhave a shot to make an impact. And then there is the Tebow debate. I like to think that with as hard as he works and as much as he cares, under the tutelage of Mcdaniels he has a very good shot of becoming a great player. He is going to sit on the bench for this season and the next and learn the playbook perfectly. I just have to think he has a very good shot at succeeding. And if not, Orton is only 27 and looks like he can be our quarterback of the future. Listen, I'm not saying the Broncos are a good team right now. I am just saying there are a lot of positives on this team for us to be excited about. Next year dumervil will be back and we will have a sick linebacking core of DJ, Elvis, Haggan, and Ayers. We need to load up on the defensive line and build some depth in the secondary and we can be a very good team next year. Keep the faith in McDaniels bronco nation, he is a very smart guy and I respect the culture he is trying to implement in Denver. We are 2 games out, the season is not lost, lets destroy the chargers and their powder puff fans next week.

  • Ducky

What was up with the KC Coach refusing the hand shake, and waggling that finger at McDaniels? He was acting like the rest of us. And KC was the team throwing late, late in the 4th quarter with no hope of victory – and then going for 2. Maybe there is a worse act in the AFC West than McDaniels.

  • anthony33

My gut was completely wrong today as I thought we would get hammered. A little dissapointed we laid back on defense (at least I think we laid back) in the second half. It would have nice to put up the same 59-14 ass beating we took, but I'll take it.

The question now is can they put 2 in a row together for the first time in over a year. They will be in every remaining game if they can continue to put points on the board in the red zone like they did today.

I liked the way Joe Mays and Spencer Larsen played. Orton continues to improve. Moreno is still average at best. The recieving core is young and very good. Defense could really use a Dumerville right now. Dawkins and Bailey did not have good games.

  • anthony33

Didn't see the end of the game. What was that all about??

  • waylon

Jebus! Who was that team today? Incredible effort, flawless execution, and a HUGE statement victory over the Chiefs. Do you realize we're only 2 games back? Our offensive line looked terrific and Dawkins gave the defense it's heart back. With a healthy line our offense is elite, and we're about to get a lot healthier on defense. Happy mutherfuqing birthday, Kyle!

I wish I knew how to quit you, Broncos.

  • areferee

    Excellent point.

  • anthony33

Just saw the video of that ass-hat Haley pointing at McD. I hope McD doesn't say something nice and rosy about it. What he should say is 'I guess Todd didn't like the ass beating put on him today… tuff shit.'

  • 12508

Here we go with the Kool Aid again. Wake up people!!! Broncos are 3 and 6. Now you want to talk about the division? Hello!!! What would you do if we win 2 in a row? Super Bowl? Get a grip. We have no talent on this roster. Xanders has taken this team back 30 years. All the talk on this blog is about hope. If we had talent on this team we could talk about a Super Bowl. That went out the window when Xanders walked into the war room.

  • areferee

As I'm sure you remember, you and I and others predicted during preseason that, to win, this team would have to score a butt-load of points. Today's game proved it again.

Although, if we could have scored 49 points in every game, we would probably have finished 15-1. If the running game looks better, like today, we can win a lot of the remaining games.

Defense is rated properly, near the bottom. Lots of missing parts.

  • Ejrubin

12508 has no idea what hes talking about. not even worth taking seriously.

  • MiKey55

good performance… still a long way to go… don't know why bailey was giving bowe a ten yard cushion everytime not really a speedster bowe and the few times they threw to him when bailey was up close they were incomplete… most of bowes catches seemed to be 8-10 yard hooks as he was “working on” bailey, i think thats more crummy defensive adapting by martindale, nice to see some pressure but man desperatly need ayers/ doom back. i know ayers doesn't rack up sacks but he got in there and made alot of havoc especially in the run game when he got hurt our run D really hurt because of it. would be nice to see us pick up another win against SD. the back half of our schedule is quite nicer to look at then the first half so to think there is an OUTSIDE shot of us getting back in there isn't out of this world because top of our division has a bit harder schedule coming up… but i do still like the idea of denver having a top ten pick… but my question is what do u pick our o line finally looked good with everyone in the right position (harris back in) running back no way qb wouldn't happen WR no need TE unless theres a really good blocking tight end there then no. i like the inside duo of haggan/williams dooms n ayers still got perrish cox n bailey unless not resigned… probably a d linemen or a DB

  • broncosman24

If I am not mistaken Haggan played OLB today and Mays took his place at ILB. I love the way Mays was punishing the WRs on cross patterns. I think we should keep Haggan at the OLB position, he looked great and Mays seems to help with the run D.

  • http://broncoszone.blogspot.com/ Jon

Wow, wow. Kool aiders chill, and McD haters chill. The season is not saved but it's also not gone – let's wait till after next week to make that kind of talk.

Meanwhile, just enjoy a Denver Broncos win! Go Broncos!

  • Bucky

ah yes, as always, as soon as the Broncos do poorly Kerry is there to say I told you so, and as soon as they do well he is there to say it wont last. Thanks so much kerry, but as always, we just dont want to hear it.

The division leading Oakland Raiders would like to thank Denver for help. Good job. Now go beat down those terrible Chargers.

  • Skdog

Lets be realistic here, it's a win, that's all. The season is only half gone and the men in orange are in last place where they fit. This game IS a building block for a little confidence though. It has to be followed up with another good win. I think it is obsurd to even entertain thoughts of a division win this season? Just hoping that this season can end up building to a positive future, time will tell?

  • Starman

I have been stewing about this the entire season. When is Kyle Orton going to get the respect he is due? Today's game is only the latest exhibit. The guy is a producer, plain and simple. Statistically he is a top 10 QB for a reason; he EARNED it. He is smart and works hard. Enough with waiting for the second coming of Elway. What do you say we move on? Orton is the best QB Denver has had since Elway . . . even better than Plummer (who I liked) and Cutler. He deserves a better team . . . and sometimes I think better fans. Embrace the present. I hope to see Orton at the helm for the next 10 years. It would bring continuity at least (something the Broncos have been missing for a decade). And that is all I have to say about that.

  • Kiethruffin

One thing about it, the most important thing is we won today and thats a good thing. I really think we have a chanceb to be great. Lets just take it one game at a time I BELIEVE in my Brocoes. DO YOU?

  • mikebirty

McJoke should be fired for wearing a grey hoodie

  • mikebirty

sorry it was a win wasn't it? book your tickets to Dallas, the McDaniels bandwagon is going to the Superbowl.

  • LevonZevon

Even though I'll probably regret it, I feel like retracting some of the bile I sent McD's way just a day earlier. In fact, if the new-found, cut-it-loose aggressiveness continues on both sides of the ball, I can agree with the rosier takes that ejrubin and Waylon offered.

Denver shouldn't be a mad-bomber team throughout the game (and obviously will never be anyway) . However, opening up FOUR deep-balls on the first-series was enough to scare the Chiefs Safeties away from supporting the run defense (at least for the first-half). And the enlivened running-game showed what a capable QB Orton can be with some balance.

Of course, a good running game can make any serviceable QB look highly efficient (as can some shoe-string, toe-tapping catches by Lloyd and Gaffney). But Kyle is certainly not the problem this year and it was encouraging to see the entire offense finally round into form with better health.

Not just Moreno– who hurdled tacklers with more vigor– but even Royal seemed faster and healthier today (although I certainly can't prove that).

But I don't think congratulating a team for another inspired orange-clad performance– that awakened its own pride and the support of the fans– is the equivalent of talking smack.

Its our job to praise them when they do well and not spare the criticisms when we feel they are allocating resources poorly on the field (and if they lose simply due to lacking talent, to criticize the front-office for not providing it from there).

And I loved how McDaniels finally allowed the defense to do something less predictable than the keep-everything-in-front-of-you timidity that doomed Shanahan's tenure as much as any other factor.

Three Haggan blitzes= three sacks. With the last jarring loose a fumble returned for TD from the no-longer-comfortable QB Cassel (who couldn't just sit there all day and wait five seconds for Bowe to get open).

Yes, during garbage time, the Chiefs piled up some passing yards. Well, who cares?

McBath, McCarthy and McBean were all getting playing time as was Syd-quan McThompson.

I just hope we keep it up and forever move away from risk-averse football 100% of the time.

To wit: If the opposition's Safeties can be kept honest and occupying the deep-middle, then McD's intricate passing schemes can continue piling up the safer 8-yard passes that Orton excels at (and McD prefers running).

I just wonder if the same strategy will work against San Diego and their own not-so-solid-Safeties (who'll likely be coached up to play deep on the first series and then cheat up afterward).

Hmmm. I'm tempted to say that we reverse course and go back to the old strategy of trying to grind out first-downs and keeping everything short on the ever-important first series or two.

But maybe the old saw about making 'em stop something before you stop yourself is true (and, perhaps, fear of being beaten deep on Monday Night Football and the effect of 3-4 long passes on body memory also contribute to that reasoning).

It will certainly be an interesting chess-match to see how McDaniels plans to deal with the not-exactly-overwhelming Safeties Steve Gregory, Eric Weddle and Darryl Stuckey (who all lack the size to stop Demaryius Thomas, if he ever gets passes to the deep seam…. hint-hint).

Also, I loved the trick plays and the lateral to Thomas from the backfield (I gotta check the tape).

Go Broncos. Even if it means we get a worse draft-pick.

  • B00tleg0723

    yeah if they had Elway

  • B00tleg0723

hey John Madden shush we do have talent. ur face is so far in Raiderville that u don't see it.

  • B00tleg0723

yes we finally got healthy on the o-line. Yes, we are capable of a playoff win in the weak divison. In two-three ,we may even be in the bowl.

  • Gary_in_SD

Tell me something… Who were those guys in the orange uniforms yesterday and what did they do with our Broncos?! Wait a second, I don’t want to know what they did with them. If they’re gagged and tied up, can we wait until the end of the season to free them and let these imposters finish it for us?!!!

  • Gary_in_SD

I can't quite agree with that thought, at least from yesterday's game point of view. I thought the defense played very well and I'm convinced they would have been able to lock down on KC's offensive if it had been a closer game. They played out the big lead wisely, preventing injuries and burnout for next week. They also made KC use a lot more clock than they wanted to.

  • Gary_in_SD

So I suppose by your logic we should just pack it in for the season and obviously there is no reason to watch any of the remaining games? I guess everyone should just sell their tickets too and to opposing fans no less?… Get real! 3-6 was the hand we were dealt and I for one am not folding on the season. As long as a team has a big play offense, there is always a chance. Especially with the league being as balanced as it is this season.

  • Gary_in_SD

I wish I knew a raider fan who would bet me that they will not choke down the stretch and win the division!

  • Kel505

Nice going, Tim. You haven't gotten much playing time, but you've done the job whenever you've gotten the chance.

  • MrKnowitall

Well put. The Broncos would be stupid to let Kyle Orton get away.

  • Runninaway1

No chance at the division this year!! When they lose they need a change, when they win they will take the division. Without a bias opinion on this I'd say they have 3 more wins by seasons end!

  • Runninawa1

Actually McDaniels is not a winner lol!! Look at his winning percentage than you will see he is anything but!! Hey, I'm a Bronco fan, but I'm also a realist!
