D.J. Williams

Denver Broncos linebacker (and team captain) D.J. Williams was arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence Sunday, 7News Denver reports.

Head Coach Josh McDaniels said he had not seen or spoken to Williams as of the coach’s 10:00 a.m. Friday morning presser.

Lindsay Jones of The Denver Post notes that this is the second DUI incident for Williams.  He was previously arrested in 2005.

The fact that this is his second offense will likely put him under the eye of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.  Notably, NFL players Jared Allen and Vincent Jackson received respective four-game and two-game suspensions for multiple DUI arrests.

The Broncos will defer to the league for Williams’ discipline, said McDaniels.

I do exactly what McD should do… cut the guy.

  • Broncobilly

We all know these guys do this, however, McDaniels needs to make sure these guys are focused considering the season they are having. These mishaps are bigger due to the crappy performance on the field. If DJ has to go, then so should McD. How about Gruden or Cowher?!?!?!?!

  • Danno

DJ goes no where. Get him into AA where he belongs. Get his 4 game suspension done as quick as possible.

Week day boozing by one of our key players is a sign players are giving up for the season. McD is losing the team this year.

    Go Broncos.

    Great, just what we needed

  • TheTroglodyte

Just because he hasn't got caught for awhile doesn't mean he doesn't do this all the time. The team may very well be giving up but there is no reason to try and tie this event to the rest of the team.

Being that he had a previous DUI the odds are pretty high he is a chronic drinker. Being that this is his second DUI, odds are he is going to get a third one if he doesn't seek help.

  • Bronco34

It's as obvious as the sky is blue, that McDummy has totally lost this team. It's time to cut ties with him and go after someone worthwhile. It's also obvious that he's not cut out to be a head coach in the NFL yet. Bring on Cowher and a top 10 pick. Thanks McDummy for making our once proud franchise pathetic by absolutely destroying us. I'm sure fans in New England are happy. PLEASE FIRE MCDUMMY NOW!

  • Riverscanbl&wme

Most overrated player on our team! Has a lot of tackles because he is always chasing down the play he should have made at the point of attack but was unable to shed his block. Takes bad angles and never makes the big play (i.e. interception). Very talented but not a major playmaker. Good bye D.J.

  • adrenaline27

Trade him… He is putting people's lives at risk with his own stupidity. That's not how a captain should act on our football team. That's putting him self before everyone else and the team.

  • mikebirty

What an idiot. If he's found guilty trade him or cut him.

  • http://www.oreadboomkings.fantake.com Triston27

This sucks but there seems to be a lot of overreaction going on. Sure, he should have been smarter, and to make matters worse, it's a repeat offense, but I'm not sure giving up on the guy is the right move.

Elway used to get sauced all the time, especially when younger. And just because he didn't get a DUI, doesn't mean he wasn't driving. Glad we didn't have the internet around back then to look down upon him from our moral high horse.

  • adrenaline27

Well now days with all the technology players need to be aware. Your pretty much under a microscope. No one is perfect, but in my eyes he put other peoples lives at risk. I don't care who you are.. there should be zero tolerance for that kind of behavior. We have already seen a few players killing people doing this. They need to wake up and realize just because they are football players and make a shit load of money your still not invincible.

  • herc_rock

Yep. John and Keith Bishop used to have drunken drag races down South Broadway back in the day. John actually got 86'd from a Cherry Creek bar and grill a couple years back.

Al Wilson was a LEGENDARY “get wasted the night before the game” type of guy.

I guess what I'm saying is, yeah DJ screwed this up, but let's not start turning into a bunch of Pollyanna's about it.

  • herc_rock

Why can't I “like” anything anymore? I'd be liking the hell out of Triston if I could.

  • robtink242

are you guys serious with the trade him talks… idk but every healthy season the man brings it and brings it hard… i'm saying if we trade or release him who's playing ILB for us at his level… yeah thought so… i dont know what prompt DJ to act so immature but he better correct it.

  • http://ehalseymiles.com E. Halsey Miles

Wow. I'm incredibly disappointed in D.J. He's one of the best players on the team and this kind of thing…ugh. I'd thought that was behind him. :/

  • anthony33

I am off the McD train, but what in the hell does Williams getting arrested have to do with McD???

Blame the coaching and personnel moves on him, not problem. To hold McD accountable for DJ's stupid stupid actions off the field is equally stupid.

  • AZBroncoholic

I think that he should lose his 'C' for this and take his punishment but anyone talking trades or releasing him is drinking too much kool-aid. Everyone is frustrated this season, DJ was really messing up by doing this, but it just shows what happens when a coach loses the locker room. This season has been rough, with injuries and poor play and everything. If anyone gets fired from this organization it should be don martindale. My old HS coach used to tell us (LB's) “you lose the LB's you lose the defense” and wink has managed to do that just like he did in oakland.

  • Nisse

so we should trade him to make him dangeres in another town than denver?

    the guy needs help.

  • adrenaline27

So blame the coaches for him going out and drinking and driving… NICE

  • AZBroncoholic

no more like blame the coaches for not being able to persuade their professionally paid atheletes to put football first.

  • mobley

Nice job DJ. Way to end the bye week on a high note. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse…

  • 12508

I think Josh can coach but we need talent. Brain Xanders and Mr. Bowlen are to blame for the team. Mr. Bowlen for the hire of Xanders and then letting him make all the awful moves. Xanders for just being over his head or just not very bright. The Hillis move is the one getting the most attention right now. We didnt think Hillis would have this type of year BUT we did know Quinn was not going to help us in any way. Hillis was a good player for us before he got hurt. At worst he could have been a damn good backup and play some fullback. We tarde for Quinn and then draft a QB in the 1st round. Awful. Xanders trades Marshall who is ALL PRO and then uses another 1st round pick on Thomas. How is Dez Bryant looking in Dallas? Xanders trades Shefler and then brings in 100 TE's.

  • 12508

I agree that Cutler had to go BUT did we get in return? Xanders had to turn those picks into something. Anything. A pro bowl center. A pro bowl punter would be better than what he drafted. Xanders all time bozo meve was the Alphonso Smith move. Who trades a future #1 with a bad team for a second round pick in the next draft for a CB not name Deion Sanders? Xanders and Isiah Thomas thats who.

  • 12508

Im pretty sure the Seahawks turned that pick into a Pro Bowl safety. Ayers,Moreno, and Tebow. This is the future? Now what has Xanders done with free agents? We all know Moreno is a bust. Xanders couldnt figure this out. How would Thomas or LT look in our backfield this Sunday? Xanders signs JJ Arrington and a bunch of bums. How did that workout? Dawkins is the only thing he has done right in this department.

  • 12508

We needed a WR to replace Marshall so Xanders trades down in the draft and takes Thomas. Looks like a bust right now. Ravens get a WR for a 5th round pick. How would Boldin look on our roster right now? No coach could win with this roster. Look at the good teams in the AFC. Steelers,Ravens,Titans,Colts,Jets,Dolphins,Patriots, and Chargers are a few. They have really good rosters or a Hall Of Fame QB

  • 12508

Some of these teams have both. Why? Because the front office has a clue. Anyone notice what is going on in KC? Look at what they have done in 2 years. GM in KC is running circles around Xanders right now. How about the Raiders? Al Davis is doing a better job than Xanders. That is sad to say.

  • 12508

I hope Xanders is not around for the next draft. It looks like we will be drafting in the top 5. What will he do? That is very scary. We could be set back another 20 years after he is done. I hope Mr. Bowlen wakes up and gets someone in the front office who can do the job. Bill Parcells would be nice.

Thomas is not a bust. He is going to be a very good player.

  • kerry

yeah based on what? his 40 time?

  • kerry

DJ if you didnt wanna play for MCD then you did the right thing. so now im sure you wont “fit the system” like Hillis and you will surely be traded. nice knowing you.

  • Nisse

alot of people put drinking over family, and u want our coach to persuade players to put football first?

your one of those people who say “just say no to drugs” right?

  • jimery

I love how we justify everything because he is famous. If D.J. slammed into your daughter or son and killed them, the fact that he is famous or on the broncos would be little consolation. What he did was wrong and stupid, he is a leader on this team and he should be setting a good example. It is irresponsible for anyone to drive drunk, famous or otherwise it makes no difference.

  • crazykid

umm..i'm pretty sure thomas is just as good as dez.

  • crazykid

is this Hope hiding behind a new username?

  • Noskills07

Whoever is blaming this on McD is absolutely ridiculous, y'all should take a step back and think about this …. a: he has problem? b: what other players from this team go out and do this? and c: D.J has played decent this year but understand this, coach always doesn't know and will not always know what players are up to on there own time and how many times has this guy gone out and didn't get caught and how many times have other players gone out and haven't got caught. McD is a good coach, these players are just stupid simple and plain and let there talent go to waste, they have plenty of time in the offseason to go party, or even sip a beer… get real… peace

  • anthony33

Here's the thing. Probably 80% of the players have done what DJ did up to getting behind the wheel. They are young, pro football players, have a boat load of money and like to go out and have a good time. I have absolutely no problem with that at all. Most of us would do the same thing, and by the way, it's not illegal.

The problem is he decided to get behind the wheel of his car. With awareness being what it is on drunk driving, it is inexcuseable. Especially when you have the means to cab it from just about anywhere. It's just plain stupid.

He shouldn't be traded or banished for life, he will pay the price via the law and the NFL. Hopefully he will pull his head out of his ass and realize how close he is the throwing what is considered a dream life down the drain.

  • NMBronc

Moss is a bust, Smith was a bust, Quinn is a bust. Thomas is a rookie, a developing player. He has shown flashes and that is all you can expect from a rookie.
