Kyle Orton is on an epic, unheard-of hot streak. And if you get your Broncos news from the national media, it’ll remain unheard-of (both SI’s Peter King and Yahoo’s Michael Silver make absolutely no mention of the Broncos in their Monday NFL columns).

But MaxDenver.com’s Andrew Mason breaks down Orton’s impressive pace

4,816: Season passing yardage that Orton is on pace to achieve after two games. Going back to Week 17 of last year, Orton has averaged 344.3 yards in his last three games. Prior to this stretch, he had never averaged more than 300 yards per game for any three-game period of his career; his best three-game average before now came between Weeks 4-6 of last year, when he averaged 267.3 yards per game. The Broncos won all three games.

Broncos PR gent Patrick Smyth adds that Orton leads the NFL in both passing yards (1,033) and 25-yard passes (12) in that three-week span that includes Week 17 of last year.

Orton is silencing his critics and returning to the form that made him a dark horse MVP candidate through six games a year ago — only better. With the emergence of at least four starting-caliber wide receivers, how far can Kyle take these Broncos?

By the Numbers: Broncos 31, Seahawks 14 [MaxDenver.com]

Kyle has suffered from a lack of respect for his entire NFL career. He's the “Rodney Dangerfield” of the league. That's OK! He has the stones to tolerate it. In fact, I'm sure he and his team would rather come in “under the radar” anyway.

If we continue to improve as a team, the East Coast bias will be forced to take note. Winning cures all. It could even make our “Little Sophomore” head coach look like a genius. Damaryius Thomas sure made his stock rise on Sunday. Kyle deserves most of the credit.

I believe there are a lot of people that deserve credit in the organization, but I'm with you, Kyle deserves a lot! He is mistake free, accurate, and a good leader/teamate. That's everything you would want in your starting QB.

McD talked about it since basically May and you can clearly see the difference a year makes in this system with a capable QB. Hats off to Orton… tough, mature and smart.

To keep it up for the rest of the season though, they have to get the running game going. Hopefully a healthy Kuper and Harris, along with a recovering Clady will help. Beadles and Walton are keepers.

  • flbronc

dthomas sure looked good. i wonder if he and mcd heard about the day dez had and needed to prove a point. either way i'll take it. unlike marshall, he didnt drop anything he shouldnt have.

The Game 17 LOSS he also threw 2 pick sixs to the smae scrub linebacker and fumbled the ball twice while being sacked. Let's not annoint him yet! Although he did play well yesterday.

I hope the O-line gets healthy too, but I sure do like the way Stanley Daniels is playing. He opened a lot of holes in the screen game and running game as well.

On a bum ankle and with little help from his running games, or wide receivers.

I'd say that we're not going to hear much positive in the national media. Since McD took over, the Broncos have been the team the nation loves to hate. Pop media is in the business of telling folks what they want to hear and that does not include praising a team everyone wants to hate. After all, they can't afford to print/talk about truth or facts if they want to keep their viewership.

We'll hear plenty, though, after all losses or when/if there is no choice but to talk about them. Kinda like trying hard to ignore someone in the room until it is so obvious you may as well be shouting at them..

  • Gary_in_SD

Very nice game… Now lets all hope that Seattle licks their wounds and gets well quickly for their home game next week against SD!

  • robtink242

Orton his way to inconsistent to crown or give any major recognition. What is relevant is that the ball is being spread… Llyod gets his passes due to the comfort of him and Orton, Royal appears to get the ball on designed plays. But Thomas OMG that guy could play some football… he's only a rookie and i should truly not get over my self but he was sharp… he's a bully and i think he will show promise.

Knowshon Moreno mix feelings? not at all he is running good and it will only get better… what not to get better than a lousy Indy defense

Amazing. We lose week 1 and every Bronco's fan wants to call the season a wrap. We dominate a bad Seahawks team and every Bronco's fan wants to put us in the playoffs.

It was a good win that showed a lot of promise and improvement from week 1 but that is all that it was. If we win 2 out of the next 3, then we can start talking playoff run.

Peyton Manning is going to expose some serious problems in our secondary. Champ is hurt, Goodman can't cover Collie or Garcon and Cox is a good young player but he isn't going to be able to slow down Reggie Wayne.

It also looks like Dallas Clark is going to have a picnic if we don't put some serious pressure on Manning.

On the other side of the ball, the Colts have a great pass defense and while they struggle against the run, their players are fast so pitches don't work against them and we have yet to prove we can consistently run between the tackles.

None of that means we won't show more improvement next week and at least be competitive if not win, but getting high over beating the Hawks is a bit premature.

  • Alila

That's all well and good, but it's ONE good game. I'd hardly call his performance “epic,” lol. I'd like to see consistency from him over the course of SEVERAL games before I get too excited.

  • Alila

Totally agree with everything you said. I swear, the Broncos have the most bipolar fanbase.

  • AtomicLeo

Look, Orton has put up good numbers in a system that is QB friendly. He played average to horrible the first 3 games last year. Played outstanding in weeks 4-6 then just stunk it up the rest of the year.

No one in the national media is paying attention to Denver or Orton because we are not a playoff team. We haven't been a playoff team for a number of years. The only attention we have is when a coach-player circus has been in town, other than that what else has this team done. Nada.

What I want to see is how Orton gets through the season. One constant through out his career both here and in Chicago: He gets hurt at some point and plays like crap after he is hurt. He did it last year and the year before in Chicago. After watching Freeney(sp?) and Mathis destroy the NY tackles last night, I'm curious if Orton (a) turns into Check-down Charlie with that kind of pressure and (b) if he goes down with a bum ankle/shoulder/whatever can he still play.

  • akfan

Agreed. Kyle gets the respect he deserves at this point. Staying healthy for an entire season and leading a team to the playoffs will ratchet up the respect he gets accordingly. Great start. Of course as good as he has been playing a former Denver QB has been playing slightly better leading his team into the end zone to win game 1 (instead of falling short on 2 attempts) and going on the road and beating a tough team. Almost beating Jags and beating Seachickens is 1 thing, beating Colts/Ravens/Titans/Jets is another thing. If Kyle can win 3 of the next 4 games and keep playing and producing at the same level as yesterday he will be swimming in respect and getting prominent billing from pretty much everybody.

There is no constant because what we know now is that Orton was injured in Chicago and showed up here hurt. He never was fully healed until now.

Lets not forget the first four games last year he was playing with a fractured finger on his throwing hand with a glove on it as well.

Orton threw for 277 against those same ends last season why does everyone talk about the Colts as if we didnt play them last year and already know what to expect ?

Im more interested in seeing what we can do now that we have some tape of our system vs the Colts to work with and quite a few players deeper into that system .

Also Orton averaged 271 yards passing his last 6 games and had a QBR of 90+ in 4 of the last 5 games . He played more than well enough for this team to win. But people refused to believe that the defense was crumbling .

  • DT

Thank Tim Tebow. Since he was drafted to the Denver Broncos, Orton has been thoroughlly improved. True competition breeds excellence. Go Gators!

What I like about this guy, is that he is probably sitting at home hoping that this sort of situation continues all season. Sure, keep me under the radar is what I'm sure he's thinking! McDaniels handled the QB situation well too by making sure all knew Kyle would start and keeping his confidence level high. Having Tebow draw a lot of attention has even helped with Orton's start I would have to think.
