Another year in head coach Josh McDaniels' system has quarterback Kyle Orton looking better than ever (BroncoTalk.net)

The Denver Broncos brought in Brady Quinn via trade and Tim Tebow through the draft this offseason, but that didn’t stop them from addressing their lame duck starting quarterback situation.

On Thursday, the Broncos signed starter Kyle Orton to a one-year contract extension that will pay the second-year Bronco $12 million over two years, reports the Denver Post.

Orton emerged from training camp as the undisputed starter, clearly outperforming both Quinn and Tebow in the team’s first exhibition game Sunday. His two-touchdown performance was all the more impressive considering he was the only Broncos quarterback to play against an opposing first-team defense.

Orton had previously made his desire for a contract extension clear in the offseason.

“Considering the labor environment, I’m aware of how difficult it was to get this deal done and am extremely appreciative,” Orton said.

We’re thrilled at this development that adds stability to the team’s QB situation as the Broncos continue to groom Tebow and possibly Quinn. Orton is poised for a career year. Press release, with some great career notes on Orton, after the jump.

BRONCOS SIGN QB KYLE ORTON TO CONTRACT EXTENSION

**Orton will be available to the media on Friday at 12 p.m. in the Broncos’ press room.**

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Thursday signed quarterback Kyle Orton to a contract extension, it was announced. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“I am excited to announce that we have agreed on an extension of Kyle Orton’s contract,” Head Coach Josh McDaniels said. “His leadership and knowledge of the offense have enabled him to have a solid offseason and training camp, and we are collectively looking forward to the 2010 season.”

A sixth-year pro, Orton joined the Broncos in 2009 after spending his first four NFL seasons with Chicago. He set career highs in nearly every passing category with the Broncos, including 3,802 passing yards that marked the 12th most in NFL history by a player in his first year with a team.

“I really enjoy playing for the Denver Broncos as well as being part of this organization and this community,” Orton said. “This is the place that my wife and I definitely want to be.

“Considering the labor environment, I’m aware of how difficult it was to get this deal done and am extremely appreciative of all of the hard work and support from Brian Xanders and Coach McDaniels during this process. I’m eager to get this season started and will do whatever I can to help this team be successful.”

For his career, Orton has played 49 regular-season games (48 starts) and completed 841-of-1,454 passes for 9,121 yards with 51 touchdowns and 39 interceptions. He entered the NFL with the Bears as a fourth-round (106th overall) pick in the 2005 NFL Draft from Purdue University.

Below are a few notes on Orton’s career:

* – Orton’s 29-19 (.604) career record as a starting quarterback ranks eighth in the NFL among active players. His 19-5 (.792) career record at home as a starter ranks third among current players.

* – His 10 games with a passer rating of at least 90.0 in 2009 tied for the highest single-season total by a player in Broncos history (John Elway, 1997).

* – Orton’s 3,802 passing yards with Denver in 2009 set a team record for a player in his first year with the club and ranked sixth in Broncos history for a season.

* – For his career, Orton has thrown 39 touchdowns and only three interceptions in the red zone for a 13:1 ratio that ranks fifth in the NFL among active players.

* – In 2009, Orton registered the third-lowest interception percentage (2.2 / 12-of-541) by a player in Broncos history. That figure also ranked sixth in the NFL for the season.

* – Orton helped the Broncos to a 6-0 start in 2009 that tied for the second-most consecutive wins to a start a season by a quarterback in his first year with a team since the 1970 NFL merger.

* – Orton’s four-game streak of throwing at least one touchdown and no interceptions to start the Broncos’ 2009 season tied for the longest such streak in a player’s first starts with a team in the NFL since 1960.

Kyle is going to surprise a lot of people this year.

I am very glad to see this version of Broncos management take care of the right people. Orton deserves the respect.

Apparently, if you show up to work. Do your job to the best of your ability. Act professionally, as in don't lobby your case in the court of public opinion. You will get a contract. If all that holds true, whenever Clady's rookie contract is up (I don't know when that is), he will get a nice chunk of change.

Good move. Orton looks much more confident than a year ago and has a full year of this system under his belt. This allows another year or two for Tebow to develop and sends a clear message to the rest of the team about how guys are treated when they are true team players.

    Good move.

  • iskabibble

Hooray for Orton! Class all the way!

Guys like Orton, Dumrvil, Bailey, Dawkins, Williams & Tebow make this a team full of great guys you can really root for.

Bye Bye, Cutler, Marshall, Henry, Clarett, Gardener, Carter, Walker, etc etc What a rouges gallery of A-holes!

does this mean McD has given up on tebow as a bust – lolz

shame its not a multi year deal which he deserves but its a start, at least it means he's got some trade value next year.

  • flbronc

    kyle orton will too.

  • flbronc

i almost expect him to be extended again next year. i am sure that they all sat down to get him taken care of next season, with a 'gentlemans agreement' to look it again after the new cba is reached. i have nothing to back that up, but it is how i would handle it with the uncertanty of the 2011 season.

  • Big_Pete

haha@everyone who says that the Broncos “have to start Tebow because they're too financially committed to him” how? what was his deal? 4-5 years at 12 million? That is peanuts compared to every other QB's contracts. The Rams, now that's a team that is committed to their draft pick!
    On to my point.
We are about to have the best backup QB that the NFL has seen in a very, very long time next year (and possibly this year with Tebow being the backup). I look for Tebow to still be the starting QB next season, with Orton being the backup.
This looks like the Dumerville deal but to a much lesser extent. The Broncos know that next year is uncapped, so Dume gets a TON of money next year, and Orton will get all this money next year, when there won't be a salary cap. It's a way to say “thanks” for providing a starting QB service for 3rd string prices last year and this year. I wouldn't read anything more into that deal than that. After next year, or next training camp when Tebow will pass him on the depth chart, look for us to either A) trade him, or B) extend him again to a 1-2 million/year backup rate, cause again, he'll be the best backup QB in the league.

    LOL

In the end, it really doesn't matter. All that matters is winning. If the Broncos win then Orton will play, if they lose then hello Tebow, goodbye Orton. It's real simple in the NFL. Win and you're in, lose and you're out. Simple math.

  • jman

I'm really happy for Kyle Orton. He has been nothing but a pro here in Denver and a much needed change in attitude for this team. Kyle has worked hard, said all the right things and made himself the clear cut starter as the QB of the Broncos. He is leading by example and other players will take note. Congrats Kyle. You deserve this. Now, get us to the playoffs! Go Broncos.

  • NMBronc

Sorry guys, but I have no confidence in Orton as an NFL QB. He is solid, but not exciting and cannot take us deep into the playoffs. He is just to easy to gameplan against. Here's hoping I am completely wrong, because I am tired of watching my Broncs lose.

The fact is, Orton is Orton and this move has nothing to do with him and everything to do with Quinn looking like Simms. This simply ensures insurance and time for Tebow to develop.

  • robtink242

This is a good sign… Anyone with a brain knows McD didnt give up on Tebow.. Jarvis Moss, Marcus Thomas, Alphonso Smith, Mckinley, Seth Olsen are all on this team that haven't done anything.. So Tebow has 5 years to prove himself… But Orton will teach Tebow how to make proper passes thru experience… hats to the Bronco organization giving Orton time to show himself to 28 teams as a decent QB… He better not go in our division.
