Elvis Dumervil

The league’s reigning sack king may not get a chance to defend his crown in 2010.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Denver Broncos outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil, who led the league with 17 sacks in 2009, suffered a torn pectoral muscle in practice Wednesday that will sideline him indefinitely. Schefter reports Elvis will be out at least four months, but could miss the entire season.

A monumental blow to the Broncos. With Ryan Clady sidelined with a knee injury, the Broncos face finishing training camp (and possibly more) without its two best, young players. But this injury is far worse in both its timing and its recovery timeline.

How does this affect the team’s plans heading into 2010? Should the Broncos make a move, via trade or free agency, to address this sudden need for a pass rusher?

    Crap.

This sucks, the organization and Dumervil do everything right in getting him signed long term and freak injury happens in training camp. Hopefully he's back sooner than later.

  • Jt2003

Time to take a look at former Bill, Schoebel….uncapped year so throw some bucks his way.

    This sucks

  • MrEast

Maybe they should stop practicing so hard in pads.

  • MiamiMike

Someone beat me to the punch. I agree we need to beat the Texans to Schoebel and try to sign him. Lets hope Doom get healthy and Broncos have good game plan to help fill void.

  • Djinks2002

Someone on the ESPN comments made a comment that this kind of injury is related to HGH use. Does that make sense? This sucks but then again hopefully Moss and Ayers step up!

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Jonathan Douglas

Is Shanny still trying to deal Big Al?

  • MrEast

Sort of, not really. I mean it can happen, but it doesn't mean it's the cause of it.

That guy also said that HGH is how Dumervil is a 5'10 DE who got 17 sacks. There is a lot of errors in that statement.

First off, Dumervil is an OLB. Secondly, HGH is commonly used to bounce back from injuries. Hence why Brett Favre was under a lot of controversy from one day having an arm hanging on to it's shoulder by a thread, and then the next having a cannon.

  • dogheadbrew

Sure, go grab Schobel, but he's been a DE his entire career, right? Will he have the same DE-LB shift and learning curve?

This is starting to get ridiculous. I don't have any stats, and admittedly biased, but it seems the Broncos have been easily in the top half of the league in injury issues the past few years. If that's true, the common denominator here is Coach Tuten. By no means am I in the “off with his head” mode, but I would really like some one more level headed, smarter and better informed than me to look into this.

  • navybsu_fan

wow, just wow. what a terrible set back. Well, time for a Broncos rookie/no name player to step up.

  • Roy

This is BAAAAAD. Let's hope one of the other young LB's can step it up. If there was anytime for Moss to shed the bust lable, now would be it.

  • MilehiMac

This is lame. We are suffering to many injuries to soon. What the hell is going on?!?!?

  • Jt2003

I think Schoebel has played DE and the adjustment would be big. However, he's got a linebacker build and as long as he can adjust or they can protect him in coverages, Schoebel has been very productive on a consistent basis. Not sure it would work but I think our LB was the defenses weak link before this injury, now it's crap and scares me….I believe Ayers or Moss can produce when I see it. I'd guess without this injury, Moss would have finally found his way to the waiver wire…..

    Ouchies!

  • Salaurabee

noooooooooooooooooo! well ayers and moss haha or drop dawkins haha or devin bishop or kevin alexander

  • Doom92

What the heck did that mean??? Was that even english…lol.

Yeah this is bad, very bad. But the injury bug is nothing new to the Broncos really. I'm sure they will do something.

  • herc_rock

    Oh say, that's awesome

    /puts pistol to head

  • Bigg

Audalius Thomas is still available and has New England/ McDaniels ties. Am I the only one that thinks he is a pretty good short term fix??

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WLV7IWZHWHGJOCYZ6WYDM3VKXI Omar

    That is garbage

  • mikebirty

terrible terrible news. Time for Jarvis Moss to earn his money. Maybe move Hagan to the outside oppostie Ayers and either of the two new lads or Griesen to start inside?

  • CJ

    hahahaha perfect

  • robtink242

how do you injure your pects?… man i hope this isn't an accurate report…. But if so Thomas is out there, a possible trade for a savy vet… Or we can take the straight up approach and make guys like Jarvis Moss, Robert Ayers earn their paychecks… They're both first round picks… Making money days of riding pine is over!

  • 12508

we are now on the clock

  • TheTroglodyte

How the HELL can we not even make it to week 1 of the pre-season without our team being dismantled????

The ONLY possible bright side to this is that Doom absolutely sucked in coverage. He is one hell of a player to have to loose BUT if Ayers can step up his game and we get someone to replace Doom who is a slightly above average pass rusher, run stopper and pass coverage, we may actually be better off.

The problem is where do you find an above average OLB at this time in the year? Moss may be making some big strides but he isn't the guy.

    A. Thomas is extremely injury prone and hasn't been productive in a couple of years.

Part of the reason Schobel left the Bills was because he didn't want to play in a 3-4 defense.

The only decent option I see here is to pickup Barrett Ruud is is extremely unhappy in T.B. start him at ILB and have Haggan and Moss rotating at OLB

  • Dan

To solve this mess, please do not waste our extra 2011 2nd round draft pick (from Miami who is going to suck this year)! Moss and Ayers have to step-up.

This is looking like a real rough start is inevitable…It may quickly turn into a good season to train Tebow with more training time.

    What a bummer!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SRY36ATGAKYMUZXTKFEJA3KLNM ramon

    trade for woodley!

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

McDaniels mentioned Haggan as a replacement.

  • areferee

As devastating as this is, we have done well in the past without much of a sack threat. The key in this situation, other than the obvious need for the other LBs to step it up, is a boat-load of points from the offense and stopping the run game on defense. (Nothing new in either of those.) The backfield still needs to improve dramatically, but we can survive, if not thrive, without “Doom”.

If we are to be a great team, we have to overcome ANY injury or setback. We can still be a better and exciting team than the last several outings. Let's not slash our wrists or mortgage the ranch yet!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SRY36ATGAKYMUZXTKFEJA3KLNM ramon

why so the can get hurt in week one. they have to be in football shape but by week one and get ready to hit. we cann't afford to get off to a slow start.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SRY36ATGAKYMUZXTKFEJA3KLNM ramon

why did we draft a linebacker this year? i expected us to to draft one

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

Denver drafted Jammie Kirlew this year. Who has has impressive days in camp.
