It was an afternoon of rest for the majority of Denver Broncos players Tuesday that included the long-awaited on-field, in-jersey debut of one veteran free agent acquisition.

Attendance Report: NT Jamal Williams was in a practice jersey but only observed the walkthrough. LB D.J. Williams, S Josh Barrett, and WR Kenny McKinley also returned after missing the morning session, with limited or no participation. Practice was closed to the public.

I counted 34 Broncos with leg pads; they would ultimately complete the ensemble with shoulder pads in preparation of the drills and 11-on-11’s to come. All rookies donned the pads, including Tim Tebow, along with a number of backup veterans.

The Broncos kicked off practice with formation walkthroughs on either end of the west field. Kyle Orton wasn’t afraid to correct his receivers at times, talking individually with Matthew Willis at one point after a perceived slight miscommunication on one play. About 55 minutes in, the shoulder pads came on, and Orton and Brady Quinn continued walkthroughs while those with pads prepped for their scrimmage.

In the 15 or so minutes of team drills, Tebow looked a bit more decisive in the pocket, and didn’t scramble once as far as I could tell. He audibled to a running play at one point. He also took a few shots down the field — something he hadn’t been doing when he got his turn in the earlier workouts. His timing was off on these routes, though; his receivers would be stopped or have to stop and come back before Tebow threw, with just about every ball falling short of his target. Still, the rookie seemed a bit more at ease this afternoon.

The defensive backs played very well in this scrimmage, allowing few completions. LB Kevin Alexander had a nice tackle at the line of scrimmage against runner Kolby Smith (I think) that required a bit of acrobatics against his would-be blockers.

Overall it was a nice respite for the veterans after four tough, physically escalating practices, and a good opportunity for the rookies, backups and bubble players to get some time. The Broncos have another media-only practice Wednesday morning before a public practice from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
