Two days after the Denver Broncos signed Syd’Quan Thompson, they’ve signed is round mate Jammie Kirlew. Kirlew drafted as a defensive end/outside was able to be picked up by the Broncos as part of the late third day trade that sent a 2011 Denver fifth round pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for two 2010 seventh round picks.

The Broncos appear to be assigning Kirlew to outside linebacker (according to the press release, made available below).

Jammie was regarded as one of the best defensive ends in college football (then again, which defensive end drafted in 2010 wasn’t?), being named All Big Ten and Sports Illustrated Honorable Mention All-American. He finished 2010 sixth in the nation in tackles for a loss (sounds like a guy we draft not too many years ago).

Kirlew played defensive tackle in a 4-3 set at Indiana University, but was expected to kick out to outside linebacker at the pro level, which he now has.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Tuesday signed linebacker Jammie Kirlew, whom they selected in the seventh round (232nd overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft from Indiana University. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Kirlew (6-foot-3, 264 pounds) earned All-Big Ten Conference honors during each of his final two seasons at Indiana, where he tied for third on the school’s all-time sacks list (23) and tied for second on its all-time tackles for loss list (52.5). As a senior, he tied for sixth in the nation with five forced fumbles in addition to posting three fumble recoveries, 62 tackles and 6.5 sacks as a second-team all-conference choice.

Kirlew also was a four-time Big Ten All-Academic Team selection at Indiana and was a candidate for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award during his final collegiate season.

An all-state selection at Cyprus Creek High School in Orlando, Fla., Kirlew was born on May 12, 1987.

    Has long arms like Elvis, but he is slower than Elvis. He has Mario Haggan speed with 4.8 to 5.0 40s at the combine. Probably a little slow to play outside linebacker. Special teams or move to inside LB.

    You're camp fodder, the Broncos only cut fifth round draft picks, not sevenths. They trade sevenths for starting quarterbacks.

    Brandon spikes had a slow 40 time but was considered one of the best line backers in the draft. in preseason we will see what his game speed is when he is playing for his life. when i saw his size I thought inside line backer too. Well, when I saw his size and that he played tackle, not end, in college.

    Either way, I don't think that every draft pick the Broncos make will make the team, or even make a significant impact if they do. I think he has a shot considering our outside line backers depth.

    Well, Kirlew could have a year of job security under your theory. The Broncos traded a 5th from next years draft (or was it 2011?) for two 7th round draft picks. either we get two more starting quarterbacks or McD realizes that they are really 5th round picks and cuts both of them next year. Who knows what can happen. Dove Valley always keeps me guessing.
