Denver Broncos offensive tackle Ryan Clady (Christian Murdock/Colorado Springs Gazette)

The flight-footed 325-lb. man known as “Sweet Feet” is on crutches.

Denver Broncos Pro Bowl left tackle Ryan Clady, so nicknamed by his teammates after they first witnessed his impressive athleticism in mini-camp as a rookie in 2008, suffered a knee injury playing basketball this weekend and is expected to miss at least three months, per multiple reports. The injury puts the nimble lineman at risk of missing the season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“It’s an unfortunate situation with Ryan,” head coach Josh McDaniels told the NFL Network Wednesday, “but we’re hopeful everything will be OK for the season.”

Clady suffered a partially torn left patellar tendon, Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports, and is expected to miss four months. Clady’s ability to participate in training camp or preseason is doubtful at this point. We’d wager its questionable at best for the first four weeks of the season.

Whether it’s protecting Kyle Orton‘s blind side or Tim Tebow‘s strong side, this is a big blow to the Broncos. Heal quickly, Ryan, the Broncos need you!

And keep your athletic gifts on the field and off the court.

Must have been a burger wrapper on the court. Wow!

  • Dan

First Harris now this. I'm speechless. What the heck are we going to do?

  • hope

    YIKES!!!!!!!!!

  • kerry

yeah im sure that basketball game was WAY MORE IMPORTANT then staying healthy for the upcoming season. basketball KILLS knees. especially someone his size.

and the hits just keep on coming. but hey call lord Tebow, he can heal all with just a single touch. i mean ask anyone, he is gonna heal all the woes of the Broncos organization in one easy swoop!

  • Jon

Kerry are you KIDDING ME! You ACTUALLY think that TEBOW is going to SAVE DENVER???? I don't like little kids and retards! I'm just kidding about that one!

  • Roy88

    Is Jared Gaither still available?

  • http://manchester-architects.com T-Money

You must not have been paying attention… Tebow said he was playing basketball too on draft day. It's too bad Dr. Kerry doesn't have a job with the broncos keeping every player under house arrest. God forbid they any fun with their lives.

  • shawn

I have to side with Kerry on this one. For the amount of money that these guys are being paid they should be able to find something fun to do that dosn't destroy their knees. Heck, I could not play a pickup game of basketball for the rest of my life for 40 million dollars, easy!

  • vmec

    great..just great. F#*%!!!!

  • http://manchester-architects.com T-Money

You guys make it seem like he's playing in like a league or something. Are you seriously trying to make me buy that it didn't happen on a freak sort of play in a quick pick up game? Please. Would you have rather him went out and played golf and swing to hard and throw out is back? It's happened to me, it could happen to him. What about soccer? Baseball? Tennis? Boxing?… He lives in Colorado where there's not much to do inside and a lot of risky sporting activities outside. You cant expect them to think football all the time…everyday…all day… It just doesn't work that way.

  • broncoinva9986

If your Three Hundred pounds you probably shouldn't play basketball unless your shaq and big Baby Davis….(of course if you have another sport as your job).

  • herc_rock

Ryan Clady will make $17M guaranteed over the course of his contract (not counting his yearly salary) to play FOOTBALL. For that kind of money, the dude can go fishing or kite-flying or some crap. You want to stay in shape? Buy an elliptical…go to Dove Valley and lift weights…whetever.

Watch for basketball to be added as a “banned activity” (motorcycles, skydiving, etc.) to a lot more contracts in the future thanks to this.

  • herc_rock

Aaron Boone thinks this is hilarious.

  • kerry

yeah havent you heard? Tebow is going to walk on the water of the Platte river and single handedly make us forget all about John Elway. well at least the MHR and alot of the Denver Post said so.

  • kerry

are you REALLY that obtuse? seriously? it doesnt take a doctor to know that a 325 pound man playing freaking basketball is a recipe for injury, especially to his knees. that is shit that you just dont do ESPECIALLY when you are the best LT in football.

i HIGHLY doubt Gary Zimmerman was hooping it up in the offseason because there isnt anything to do outside in denver. which is complete horseshit anyway. there is tons to do outside WITHOUT playing basketball. get out and try it sometime. a multi million dollar pro bowl LT shouldnt be doing anything to jeapordize his knees. break a finger, yeah he can play through it. Chris Kuper played with a broken hand in 08. knees however you cant play on unless its something VERY minor. dont have to be a doctor to know that. common sense tells you that. of which you have none.

  • Jon

I just love all the opinions expressing what they feel Clady can or cannot, should or should not, be allowed to do with his own life, simply because he plays for a football team that none of us have any actual association with except the ones we MADE UP in our own minds lol.

  • broncosfaninal

No, Gary Zimmerman did not play B-ball. He did, however, ride his hog across country to Sturgis every year. Remember how Elway went to Sturgis to chase after Zim for “one more year” even though Zim didn't have any feeling in his arms after he woke up in the morning (and still doesn't)? You could argue that motorcycle riding is more dangerous than B-ball.

  • herc_rock

This is a blog, correct? A place where a bunch of dudes can express their opinions on Bronco related topics?

  • TD30isMVP

I am guessing that this 300 pounder that is used to fighting it out in the trenches with other monsters figured that going up against (what I am guessing is) much lighter competition probably didn't figure he would get hurt. Good Lord fellas, there was less outrage on this board when Marshall slapped around his girlfriend.

  • kerry

yes i remember. and he shouldnt have been doing that either.

  • Jon

Indeed it is. Which is exactly why “I… love all of the opinions” and never said people shouldn't express their opinions. Perhaps a bunch of “dudes” should reread what I wrote :)

  • Jon

lol that is true. The average fan only cares about what is going to happen on the field though, not the person or said character of that person. We treat players like objects, mere pawns in a video game and only get upset when that pawn is unable to be on the field come Sunday.

  • herc_rock

Well, the tone of your post implies that people with the opinion that there are certain activities that players shouldn't engage in during the offseason should have better shit to do with their lives.

  • herc_rock

    Duh.

  • Jon

I'm afraid you have inferred that all by yourself. Perhaps YOU feel that YOU should have better shit to do? My tone implies that people shouldn't be freaked out like their life just ended because “the player” to quote McD, hurt himself playing a pickup game of b-ball and just wish the guy a speedy recovery as you would want others do to for you if the situation was reversed.

  • herc_rock

Fiddle dee dee and all that, eh?

Oh, poor Ryan Clady. I'll simply ignore how this effects the donks and wish a speedy recovery for the guy none of us will ever know outside of what he does on a football field.

Take your pollyanna shit to MHR.

  • Jon

I apologize, I didn't realize you had a personally vested interest in the Broncos. Good luck having your life so tied up in a team that doesn't know you exist. I hope that works out for you :)

  • herc_rock

We ALL have a personally vested interest in the Broncos. Otherwise, we wouldn't be here.

  • Jon

I enjoy rooting for them. In fact I enjoy it an awful lot. I like the imaginary connection I have made to the team.

I'm not vested in them though. Nothing the Broncos can ever do or not do, will ever ruin or make my day. At some point, you just have to step back and ask yourself, is my frame of mind conducive to being the person that I want to be and living the life that I want to live.

If your answer is yes, then by all means, keep doing what your doing. I'm not asking you to stop or telling you that you should.

Well it appears that I am beginning to become vested in this conversation now so I'm going to get back to doing something a little more productive then running my mouth :)

And every time Denver took a tackle during the draft and signed one of the UDFA's I was like what in the hell? We are solid.

Good job in Denver keeping it secret during the draft so we didn't blocked by anyone…

Did anyone else notice how the Chargers jumped directly in front of us twice during the draft?

  • TD30isMVP

Kinda like they do in the division every year…there is a pattern here!

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

    ZING! Don't be short-sighted though! =P

  • kerry

and let the countdown to the “Trade Clady” sweepstakes begin.

  • TJ

To quote Beavis & Butthead; “This sucks worse than anything that has ever sucked before.”

  • areferee

Some of the comments seem to beg the question implicitly raised in Kyle's article. The “fleet-footed”, or as Kyle says: “flight-footed” Clady has abrogated his responsibility to his team, his teammates, the organization and the league by jeopardizing his health in a senseless way by participating in what some are saying was a “harmless” pursuit of personal fun.

I would suggest that any form of personal “fun” in ones free time is certainly allowed, but the responsibility for the results remain with the individual. If I exercise my right to go skiing, so be it. But if I fall and break my leg and can't work, I may lose my job if I can't perform its duties for an extended period of time. Why should my company suffer?

Neither athletes, nor any other form of celebrity are not royalty, even though many treat them as such…and many have grown to expect such treatment. All of them, including Mr. Clady need to be held to the same standard expected of us all. Be responsible for your actions and pay the price when you are irresponsible.

Yes, he will suffer, and he must go through months of rehab. It's what he deserves for his choice. What does his team, his organization and his mates deserve? If you can't perform and you were totally responsible for your own injury, should you expect to be paid anyway? I suggest there should be a precedent established in this case, and in every other where irresponsible off season actions place the organization at risk. In the NFL just as in the REAL world.

  • Todd McFeely

“But if I fall and break my leg and can't work, I may lose my job if I can't perform its duties for an extended period of time. Why should my company suffer?”

Interesting. I guess you had better put yourself in a position where you are a little more valuable than some random hourly employee that can be easily replaced.

Besides that, he is going to lose a lot of money because of this boo boo brain. The actual dollar value of contracts ARE NOT what they look like to you. Just because he isn't calling you to have a personal conversation about how much this is going to cost him, doesn't mean he isn't going to lose out on hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Lastly “It's what he deserves for his choice”… You're an asshole for saying that!

  • Roy88

A dude Clady's size could tear a ligament just walking down stairs if he steps wrong. Personally, I would much rather see athletes playing a pick up game of b-ball than partying in the clubs, *allegedly* raping women, or getting into phyisical altercations with their signifigant other. At least he was doing something to stay in shape instead of eating his way through the offseason (take that Jafatass Russell!).

We have bigger problems. Orton, Quinn, Moreno, the d line, and our GM. Alphonso Smith too. Cant forget the #14 pick in this years draft who cant get on the field over Ty Law who like 45 now. Lets just be happy Clady is a great player and has not been traded yet. Hope Josh does not lose his job before we get a new GM who will know how to draft. Who will know you dont trade your #1 draft pick for a 2nd round cb. You really really dont do it after you trade your qb and bring in a rookie coach with a defense who gave up 1000 points the season before. How did this guy keep his job? Is he related to Pat Bowlen? Maybe a stepson? This has to go down as one of the worst moves in history. Isiah Thomas is a genius next to this idiot.
