My lord, and we thought our team treated our star wide receiver bad. According to, well everywhere, Super Bowl XLIII MVP Santonio Holmes was traded to the wide receiver needy Jets for a lousy 5th round pick. Holmes, despite being one of the best in the NFL, has had several off the field issues ever since joining the league. Where have I heard this before?

Holmes latest incident involving him throwing a glass at a woman and cutting her above the eye at a nightclub in Orlando. He is now most likely facing a four game suspension. Holmes then gracefully handled this situation by telling one “fan” via Twitter that “he shud [should] try finding the worst thing that you could [can] n [and] kill urself [yourself]”. My guess is that either Santonio didn’t get the best out of his Ohio State education (unlike one of our faithful readers), or he’s just not a fan of the 140 character limit.

Santonio then decided that he wasn’t done with making a fool out of himself on Twitter. He then wrote one eloquently phrased ‘tweet’ where he declared his desire to “wake n bake”. Which leaves us thinking either he’s a fan of cooking in the morning or marijuana. Since Holmes was charged with possession of marijuana back in 2008 we all might know what he meant.

Nonetheless, the fact of the matter is if a Super Bowl MVP can be traded for a measly 5th round pick, what does this mean for Brandon Marshall?

Marshall’s career has unfortunately mirrored Holmes career off the field more than on it. This trade (I’d call it a heist) has massacred whatever chance the Broncos had to deal Marshall for a first round pick. Meaning, Denver fans will be very angry if a trade occurs involving Marshall on April 23, rounds two and three of the draft. In light of all these events I’m definitely rooting for Brandon to stay. I don’t see the virtue in trading a player of that talent level for anything less than a first. Especially until Josh McDaniels and Brian Xanders can prove that their capable of drafting an instant starter. The bottom line is if Marshall is dealt, don’t expect anything lucrative in return.

Apparently the thing to do this offseason is to ship your all-star receivers to teams that have been desperately looking for one at no cost. I for one hope the Broncos do not partake in this phenomenon.

McNugget needs to sit down with Brandon and work things out. McNugget's inexperience is hurting the Bronco's plain and simple.

I too am hopefull that if the value of a trade is not there…that BMarsh doesn't get traded at all! I think that this whole experience will be good for Brandon to (hopefully) realize that he will be held accountable for his actions.
This is all on Brandon! I've heard and read a plenty to know this situation does not stem from a young coach's poor decision making. Brandon has shown a desire to not walk the line that the rest of modern civilization is held to. This just might very well be the very thing that was needed to get him…back in line.

    McNugget!!! Child please!!!!

  • ETL

McNugget didn't beat a woman. McNugget didn't punt a ball and cry like a little girl during training camp. McNugget didn't quit on the team. McNugget doesn't care if he loses as long as he gets the record. McNugget actually cares about the team.

McNugget just needs to improve on the draft and offensive line.

Brandon Marshall's immaturity is hurting the Broncos (not possessive) plain and simple.

Ha, thanks East for the shout-out. I'm with you on keeping Marshall. If Denver could get fair value for him, I'd be all for a trade. But what's fair value? To me, fair value would be a top 15 pick, and that's not going to happen.

So if Denver can't get fair value, why trade him? Does his off-field issues hurt Denver's chances at the playoffs? Big Ben and Holmes have obvious character issues but won two Super Bowls.

I would love to have a team of “choir boys” but you still need talent to win.

I think we have good quality guys in the locker room with Dawkins, Bailey, Royal, and Williams but need more talent to take that next step.

Brandon Marshall to the ST Louis Rams for there second round pick or the first in the second rd and swap 4th rd picks and don't tell me the Rams have no interest because nobody knows who does or doesn't have interest. The Rams have no WR and if they get Bradford who the heck is he gonna throw to. If the Rams are smart then they trade there 3rd or 4th rd to Denver for Scheffler since both he and Marshall are Mc D's dog house. We get picks they get proven players that are still young.

According to NFL.com, Santonio Holmes' has been ranked 44th ('06), 44th ('07), 38th ('08), and 13th ('09) among wide-receivers during his 4-year NFL career. Considering this, and the baggage he carries, a 5th-round pick is about all he's worth, isn't it?

  • Big_Pete

Holmes is a “good” WR, but he is far, far from “great”. He made 1 catch that made him a name, but take away that 1 catch, and his entire career is forgettable. A 5th round pick is about right. The Steelers were going to cut him, so they said they'd take any offers, which turned out to be a 5th round pick.
This doesn't hurt Marshall's value any. I'm not sure there was a value to begin with, what with the timing of him hitting the market. I just hope that if we don't get a mid 1st round pick, we keep him. We can always franchise him next year to keep him here, so it isn't like other NFL teams can wait for us to let him be an UFA.
Also, CompUser has good stats. He's in the mid 40's for rankings. That is the #2 WR on every NFL team. He's worth a 5th round pick, nothing more.

Like it or not, the problems in Denver do in fact stem from a young coach's inexperience as much as they do from the primadonnas installed by the previous regime.

This is a product of a coach's failure to win over the locker room. Why is it that this is the only situation caused by these circumstances in which the players are taking all of the blame?

  • dogheadbrew

Does anyone think we are now seeing the growing pains of the Goodell era? We knew he was a disciplinarian, which was not the vogue of the previous regime. “Character flaws” used to be a coaches concern, and many coaches saw it as a challenge of sorts to tackle those issues. Now those same flaws cost money, wins, playoffs, sponsorships and attendance ultimately. Is it possible that this off season is showing GMs and Owners are not willing to mortgage their teams and income on immature punks?

benbroncsfan – Like it or not, what you posted is not fact, it is your opinion. Fact – McD is the coach, 'nuff said! It is the player's responsibility to honor and respect the position, regardless of who is in it. If he doesn't, there isn't anyone else to blame but himself.

From everything that I read and hear, McD is a player's coach. I don't recall reading that he has failed to win over the locker room. As in every change of leadership, the new guy must replace some positions with his own people. This is the process of rebuilding. If the incumbents don't catch the vision and/or are unwilling to change, they will not be long in that postion.

On the field you cannot even start to campair marshall and holmes. Marshall is a game changer, holmes isnt near the same caliber at all. He could have been worth a third round pick but the fact that hes going to miss 4 games next season is probably why he was traded for a 5th.

Does it not mean that a team CANNOT aquire Brandon Marshall unless they give up a 1st round pick? I honestly dont think McDaniels is a bad coach he has a plan and he was with the patriots for all the superbowls they were in and won. I hope he sits down and has a serious man to man talk with Marshall and tells him why he should stay. If Marshall stays and we improve the offensive line and hopefully Brady Quinn gets a chance to start and shows why he was a 1st round draft pick. Orton should start this coming season but I think the future is Brady Quinn he has heart and loves the game.

Good stuff East, I've said all offseason Denver should re-sign him for at least one more year, now I want them to even more, because he Is worth a 1st Rounder.

Broncos meet with Dez Bryant this week… According to scout.com… As he also did with the Baltimore Ravens on Monday, so don't think that Baltimore is out of contention despite what their reporter (@ravensinsider) may think.

  • kerry

this doesnt mean anything for Marshall and the Broncos. absolutely nothing. i highly doubt McD just said after that trade “oh i better accept a fifth rounder because the Steelers did it”

  • Big_Pete

Marshall just signed his Tender!!! Post this up guys!
