I’ve been splitting my time lately between monitoring everything Bronco-related and watching what Mike Shanahan is doing in Washington.

I think it’s interesting that both teams have made QB moves this off-season. I know it’s hard to compare Brady Quinn coming to Denver with the bombshell of Donovan McNabb‘s inner-divisional move to the Redskins, but I think it clearly points to the pervasive idea that you need a star signal-caller to make it to the Big Game these days.

McNabb’s move may not seem like it directly effects the folks of the Mile High City, but I for one certainly think it impacts Bronco fans in a big way. As a long-time follower of Shanahan, I can tell you one thing that will most certainly happen now that McNabb has been officially introduced to DC today…

Expect a serious push by Shanahan to acquire Brandon Marshall.

Here’s my reasoning…

We all know that Shanahan requires a QB that’s 100% devoted to the game (remember Jake Plummer’s fatal flaw was telling Shanny that football was just his ‘job’ not his ‘life’). He wasn’t happy with JC (not Jay Cutler, but Jason Campbell), and wanted to bring in his own guy.

McNabb is very serious about football. It’s his passion and I think both his experience and his attitude in the locker-room makes him a great choice for Mike’s new Washington Redskins.

To be honest, I think he’s been pursuing McNabb for some time – probably since the first day he landed in DC. And although several draftniks around the league keep mentioning the QB meetings taking place in DC, I think we can assume Shanahan has fully addressed his QB issue.

Having dealt with the QB, Shanahan also has a #4 overall pick coming up this month. I think Mike’s hoping to score a starting LT in Oklahoma State’s Russell Okung. This would be reminiscent of his selection of Ryan Clady in 2008.

So, mark QB and O-line as officially addressed and you quickly come up with two other areas Mike needs to upgrade in Washington:

Safety and WR.

I’m not sure how he’ll address his safety issue. He’s filled that position in Denver both with the draft and by finding veteran free agents, so I’ll side-step this one and jump to his WR position.

At WR he’s got Santana Moss and Devin Thomas. But he needs to add a playmaker for his newly acquired franchise QB. What better place to start than his old ‘project’ from Denver, Brandon Marshall?

Shanahan knows Brandon’s weaknesses as well as his strengths. Marshall would add a very big body to the the Redskins receiving corps (Moss is 5′-10″ and Thomas is 6′-2″). Mike has history with Marshall and I think Shanahan is uniquely positioned to both offer Denver more compensation for Marshall and Mike’s probably one of the few people that Marshall would respect (and trust) enough to accept a payday that’s reasonable (and not over-inflated).

Add to this Daniel Snyder’s deep pockets and that the fact that Team Shanahan/Allen appears to have near universal control over the team, and I think you have the makings for a very, very strong push from Shanahan for his favorite troubled WR.

The last point I’ll make is that Mike Shanahan has been pretty openly offering Albert Haynesworth up for trade bait. With the Broncos brand new 3-4 defense, would Josh consider a trade for Marshall that would send the big nose tackle to Denver?

The $40M questions, of course, will be what Josh McDaniels response will be to any offer from DC.

What do you think? Is there enough Shanny can offer his former team for the services of #15?

  • chrislynch

I am not completely sold on this. Yes, we all know the history with Shanny and #15. However, the Redskins have no other meaningful draft picks. Unless Shanny and Co. are willing to part with that #4 overall pick, I say there is no need to get Haynesworth and take over that $40m salary. That's not worth it IMO.

  • bennybudz

I could honestly see marshall going to the redskins, I dont believe however that McD would want. Wouldnt be shocked to see a multi team trade that sends Haynesworth to one team, Marshall to the skins and a couple picks possibly a player to the broncos.

  • bennybudz

Not that I think it will happen but I could see Marshall going to the skins. I don't feel that we would want Haynesworth, salary wise and the fact he is a 4-3 DT so not suited for us. I could see plenty of teams wanting him and a multi team trade would not suprise me. The broncos send Marshall to the skins, skins send Haynesworth to another team, that team sends draft picks to the broncs and perhaps a player. Something like that might interest the broncos very much, could even give us better value for marshall than a straight up 2 team trade.

  • RafaTheRed

This is just not going to happen!!!

The Redskins wideouts are good enough without Marshall and Haynesworth is being peddled around the league and nobodys buying! Haynesworth has also flat out refused to be a nose tackle in a 3-4 this is part of the problem the Redskins have with him!

So with no real amunition left after the McNabb trade (#4 not an option skins need a tackle) and hole s in other parts aof their roster why would they trade for Marshall?

  • http://broncoszone.blogspot.com/ Jon

last night i dreamed the broncos traded him 2 the redskins, and it was such a realistic and vivid dream i Really thought it was real, when i woke up i realized it was a dream…

  • dbroncs24/7

This isn't going to happen and reading this article was a complete waste of time. Shanahan was considering cutting marshall had he not been fired, and Haynesworth is a baby and will not play nose. Please do some form of research before writing another pointless article.

  • Anna Wilson

You have got to be joking! Everyone knows that Shanahan was going to flat out CUT Marshall if he couldn't trade him just before he was fired. Why on earth would he want him now if he didn't want him then???

No Way No How he goes after Marshall. He isn't going to pay him the guaranteed contract Marshall wants AND he obviously doesn't think his skill compensates for his attitude since he was going TO CUT HIM.

lol Gotta do your homework a little better next time

  • BroncoMan24

I agree, we will prob not trade Marshall to Washington. I also wouldn't be interested in Haynesworth, but to solely say this wont happen because some stupid story (never confirmed) that came out last year about Shanahan possibly cutting or trading Marshall is silly. I do not believe for a minute that Shanahan wanted to get rid of him.

  • Big_Pete

    I don't know. I can see a multi-team deal.
Also, Shanahan said in many interviews that the speculation of him wanting to cut Marshall wasn't true.

  • DenversFinest

If he does go after Marshall, our compensation won't be haynesworth. He is the most overated person in all of football, and overpayed as well. I don't think he's ever played a full 16 and when playing he always plays hurt. Plus his contract is WAY too rich for Bowlens blood. It would have to be a 3rd this year, if they still have that pick, and a 1st next year. You've been slipping Broncotalk, pull it together.

  • Anna Wilson

“but to solely say this wont happen because some stupid story (never confirmed) that came out last year about Shanahan possibly cutting or trading Marshall is silly.”

It was reported by Adam Shefter, it doesn't need any more confirmation than that. It happened.

  • broncosman24

Lol if you say so. I know Adam is good, but come on. One he is not always right and two normally when he comes out with “breaking news” you will also have someone else confirm it. When did you hear someone else confirm this. The answer to the question is – never.

  • Bob Watters

How about this on Brandon Marshall , Rams trade there 33rd pick or first pick of the second round and also flip flop there 3rd round picks with Denver , meaning Denver would pick 1st in the 3rd round and the Rams would pick 16th.
Take the 33rd pick and grab Pouncey Center from Florida and you have your next Tom Nalen for 10 years. You move up in the third and all is well.

  • DenversFinest

The rams aren't interested in Marshall. All I've heard is Seattle and possibly Washington. Also Pouncey's gone by the 33rd.

  • Anna Wilson

    Chris Mortenson also reported it.

  • broncosman24

I said confirmed it not report. If Mortenson reported it, it must be a lie. That guy will fake his own kids death to get it on the news. I know where you are coming from, but if these two are the only reliable sources that you got, I would still have to say that story wasn't true. You never heard Shanahan say as much. So to me this is not factual information. Anyways Go Broncos!

  • broncosman24

I would like this as well. As long as we don't end up with Haynesworth I would be happy with a multi-team deal.

  • Bob Watters

With the Rams getting Bradford at #1 and only having Avery to throw to , I think it is a possibility that the Rams take a look at it. Bradford , Avery , Marshall , Steven Jackson , then all they need to do is trade for Scheffler and they have an offense again.

  • areferee

Kyle…Kyle…Where are you? Got your roof fixed? Where ya been? We're dyin' here!

  • broncosman24

Although, I would much prefer to get more compensation, I could deal with this deal. I think it is important that we use the 1st rd pick to get McClain (or defensive player) or WR. I am leaning more towards the defensive side. I don't trust Dez Bryant with the #11 pick after hearing all the bad stuff about him lately. I also wouldn't be opposed to trading down to get more picks. I am kind of back and forth on this.

  • rct930

I could be wrong but my understanding is that Mort reported this story first. And that makes it suspect. Also, Jeremy Bates was Mike's guy, and he wants Marshall. So there's a disconnect there too.

Still, I would lay 50 to one that Marshall does not end up in Washington.

  • broncoman24

    Aggreed!

  • rct930

I would love for this to happen. But Pouncey will be gone in the first round. I expect Denver to trade down and pick a playmaker like Golden Tate or draft Pouncey.

So far Marshall isn't attracting much interest. That might change before the draft. But my feeling is that if we can't get a top 35 pick we bring him back regardless of the potential problems. He can't sit the year out. Otherwise he hurts his next contract big time.

  • http://broncoszone.blogspot.com/ Jon

Wow harsh, create your own site and blog your thoughts instead of basing others.

  • dbroncs24/7

First off I don't know what “basing” others means so why don't you learn how to speak, second I'm just pointing out that if you're going to write an article for a website that usually gets it's shit right, then do some research.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

I was going to make the 4-3/3-4 comment, so thank you for beating me to it.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

There was also the report that Marshall threw a punch at Jeremy Bates… So who knows what, it would be more telling if Shanahan didn't make a run at Marshall then if he did.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

Of course he did, what is he going to say now, “Sure, I wanted to cut his ass.” He's not going to bad mouth a player while he's out of football, looking to get back in.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

Over paid yes, over rated, no. Definitely extremely talented.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

I don't think that Washington will make a run for Marshall, I think Shanahan knows better and if he does in fact make a run for Marshall then I have serious questions for the people making decisions for this team.

Not that Shanahan hasn't had some extremely questionable people employed in Denver, but to me the only reason the Broncos haven't offered Marshall the deal he wants are his character issues.

So I would be far more troubled if in fact the Redskins were interested than I would be if they weren't.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

What do you mean? Like, do you want an update on Kyle?

  • DenversFinest

I dont agree. Whats the use of “extreme talent” if hes on the field for 8 games a year if that. His work ethic, injury proneness, dont think thats a word, and attitude negates his talent. I'd rather have a player with half the talent, 200% the work ethic, and that can play a full season and 1/4 of the price. Thats just me.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

I don't disagree with all of your points at all. However, if I'm a 4-3 defense I'm building around Haynesworth. I'll take four games from a player of his talent versus none.

He's missed nine games in the last three seasons by the way.

  • DenversFinest

His contract is ridiculous. He is not worth it. He's Overated!!! “I'll take four games from a player of his talent versus none.” With his giant contract? You can't be serious. Only Al Davis is that crazy. He's way too streaky too. You can't bet the farm on one position. I believe in having solid players all around.

  • broncoinva9986

    bashing* :)

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

Just want to put it out there again that I am not saying Haynesworth to the Broncos is any way shape or form, but the Redskins have already paid out a large portion of his guaranteed money.

So that leaves me with a per year that is yes high, but not unreasonable in comparison to what others at his position and skill level are being paid.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson
  • DenversFinest

    Damn…can he play a 3-4 DE? :)

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Jonathan Douglas

As for at least 'talking' about Marshall, Washington press has been asking Shanahan about it for a couple of weeks now. When asked point-blank about trade talks for Brandon, Shanahan was quoted last week as saying, “Just have to wait and see. Can't share that with you.”

That's not a smoking gun by any means, but it's definitely NOT a denial.

Now that he's got McNabb, I'd be surprised if we don't hear more about the Skins speaking with Denver about Marshall.

**And I agree with almost all of you… we don't want Albert. I just know they're shopping him, Campbell and Landry.

  • http://broncoszone.blogspot.com/ Jon

Bronco Nation always remembers three names, John Elway, Kyle Montgomery, and Sayre Bedinger.

  • http://broncoszone.blogspot.com/ Jon

    Thanks broncovina9986, and @dbroncos24/7, Wow.

Even the Redskins Insider says this could happen, so you can stop crying about research, this is common sense.

    http://voices.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinside

  • dbroncs24/7

Well considering that a high ranking Redskin official, not an “insider” that thinks he knows the team's intent, stated that they are not going to trade Haynesworth, coupled with the fact that they have no second round pick and hold the Forth overall with glaring needs on the offensive line this is simply not going to happen. Sorry to spoil your weak argument.
    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=506

  • http://broncoszone.blogspot.com/ Jon

I never said they would go for Albert, and I don't really think the Broncos will trade BM to the Skins, but I was just sayin you don't have to criticize Jonathan Douglas for sharing his thoughts, that's what You are doing.

  • dbroncs24/7

All I'm saying is that when you're a writer for a website like this you should know what you're talking about.

  • http://broncoszone.blogspot.com/ Jon

BTW, Michael Lombardi notes that the Skins do have him on the block [http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d8175f344&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true], and NFL Network says: “Will Brandon Marshall be the next big catch for the 'Skins? Michael Lombardi explains how a deal could get done before the draft. > http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-network-total-acc

  • dbroncs24/7

So you're going to trust Lombardi over the Redskin organization and Adam Schefter???? Wow this conversation is over you're clearly to hard headed to accept what's right in front of you. You're defending something you don't even think will happen! Ridiculous

  • http://broncoszone.blogspot.com/ Jon

I'm not defending something I don't even think will happen, I'm defending Jonathan, you should try writing and see how you like people criticizing your every idea.

  • dbroncs24/7

If he didn't welcome criticism he wouldn't be much of a writer. And I quote you “I don't really think the Broncos will trade BM to the Skins” so you are defending something you don't think will happen.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Jonathan Douglas

Jon, thanks for the defense. And while I truly appreciate your comments, when you publish something to the web in this format you just get used to getting beat up sometimes.

Heck, if no one dissed your work, it’s probably because no one is reading your work. :)

And come on – it’s not worse than having Miles call me out! lol

  • DJ

    Hi All,
Brandon is gone why not trade down for washington pick up a good OT in a lower position and trade for Brandon. He is a good WR. Mike would take him for sure. You say Mike wanted to get rid of him not so true. Mike was mad he got hurt. He is an outstanding WR. Top 5. Mickhoddy does not want him but Mike has taken others with bigger issues in the past. Why do the fans of Washington not want a top 5 WR. You won't get on in the draft. Also your record last year was less then great thats why your drafting so high. Brandon will end up in Washington DC or Seattle Washington watch and see.
