Tennessee Titans unrestricted free agent center Kevin Mawae

Tennessee Titans unrestricted free agent center Kevin Mawae

The Denver Broncos have expressed interest in free agent center Kevin Mawae, reports NFL.com’s Jason La Canfora, citing a league source. Per La Canfora, the two sides have exchanged contact.

Mawae, 39, started in all 16 games for the Tennessee Titans last year.

After releasing the 37-year-old Casey Wiegmann in February, the Broncos might just get older at the position. At 289 lbs., the addition of a Mawae would be a lateral move if ever there was one. But the Broncos desperately need a veteran lineman to provide experience — or, at the very least, depth — at the position for whomever they draft.

We’re not thrilled with the idea, but we can’t slam the Broncos for kicking Mawae’s tires, either. If anything, it just amplifies how surprising it was to see Wiegmann let go weeks ago.

And it makes one wonder: when that decision was made, at what level of contingency planning was “Kevin Mawae?”

    pick up to

Even being on the decline he's one of the best in the league. It can't hurt to sign him for a year or two.

We need to quit making lateral moves, he was good, he is old, we need to get younger or we should of kept Casey. Sorry Josh, I cannot support this move. No offense to Kevin, but we need more players over 36, like Denver needs more 8 and 8 seasons.

    Nice depth

He may be good, but what's the rational? Casey has to be at least comparable, and he's been here for two seasons (I know major upheaval in one). Furthermore, how much are we paying for Kevin (IF we get him)? This seems to be questionable foresight at best. On the flip side we have an expensive long snapper.

You guys wouldn't believe what I found in my freakin toilet this morning. I thought I flushed my cat down there once again, but no, it was a polar bear! I got it out, and it thanked me graciously for my help, as it ran off into the Northern Sunset. Strange times are ahead people.

Word from Titans fans is that they weren't too thrilled with Mawae in 2009. I'm not sure if he's still one of the best 32 in the league.

I've read similar reports. It's just hard to believe that they guy goes from best Center in football to not even starter worthy. It did happen to Elam I guess…

It's very similar to what happened to Wiegmann.

I guess that's what irks me about it. I don't really have anything against Mawae (assuming we still find our center/guard of the future in the draft, whichever Seth Olsen doesn't play). But this whole situation feels like the Broncos are desperate after cutting Wiegmann and getting caught with their pants down.

YES YES YES THAT WOULD BE A GRATE MOVE.The Broncos need to start TOME BRANDSTATER HE'S ARE BEST QB BY FAR.Wait and see you all will love Tom Brandstater.

We need serious help at center. If we can get Mawae cheap, let's do it. We need depth desparately on the offensive line. When Ryan Harris got injured llast season our offense and wins stopped. I sure hope Ryan's foot is healed by training camp…We need him back ASAP.

Releasing Andra Davis may have been a little premature…Why not cut him during training camp if he wasn't measuring up to his salary. That is really forcing our hand in the draft at middle linebacker when we have equal holes at center and guard.

And, for the love of God please sign Brandon Marshall to a fair contract!!! The last thing we need to do to our sick offense is to add a massive hole at wide receiver. As immature as Brandon has been acting, he still beats Dez Bryant's lower speed and much lower intelligence. In interviews, Dez sounds permanently confused…And were going to give him McD's bible sized play book and expect results when?!

I am not sure why we should be concerned, we have Hamilton and Dustin Fry to play center. Oh yeah, we are set.

Mawae may be listed at the same basic size as Weigmann, but he plays bigger. Hard to explain what I mean, but compare Rod Smith's 6'0 frame to that of Ashley Lelie (who's three inches taller but not as built or as wide-shouldered).

Same for John Elway and Brady Quinn (both listed at 6'3, yet Elway's superior size just pops on your TV screen when compared with the relatively-diminutive Quinn).

Mawae is the same square-built way and much more able to handle power-rushing calls against 3-4 DT's (that were having their way with Casey in the last season's second-half).

Now age is another matter entirely. But, like I originally read on broncos-discuss, drafting Iupati allows Denver to have a serviceable backup in case Ryan Harris' toe problems persist (and Mawae and Olsen could hopefully handle the LG and Center spots cheaply).

Of course, the ideal solution is to trade down and be able to draft Plouncey and Iupati (while Ryan Harris recovers without a hitch). Mawae can be Maurkice's guiding veteran to emulate as we finally return to the post-season, in this best of all possible worlds (where B-Marsh, suitably chastened, comes back to the fold).
