The Denver Broncos are holding firm on their first round draft pick asking price for wide receiver Brandon Marshall, reports Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post.

I fully expect another team to jump into the Brandon Marshall sweepstakes at some point this week. Not certain which team, but it appears Marshall has more than one team interested in his services. I do know this: The Denver Broncos won’t negotiate a trade for Marshall. Either a team is prepared to pay a first-rounder or move along. Denver will not take calls on Marshall; it’s either an offer sheet or he plays in Denver next season. If Seattle really wants Marshall, it will take the sixth pick in the draft…

Surprising? Yes. Many figured the Broncos would have been taking calls on Marshall for some time. According to this report, Josh McDaniels is sticking to his guns.

Lombardi: Broncos want first-rounder for Marshall

not suprising at all. it's what the broncos should do. there's no way he is worth less than a first rounder. most every sportswriter puts bm in thier top 3-5 wr's today. why is it suprising that we would demand a first rounder for that? if you draft a wr in the first round, and four years later he has a couple of pro bowls, multiple 100 catch seasons, sets the single game record for receptions and constantly makes highlight reel grabs, do you call the pick a bust? not one bit. you probably pat the guy who picked him on the back, and laud his ability to detect cant miss talent. so we picked him in the fourth round, big deal. he's worth at least a first, if not more.

  • Jay

He would be worth a number 1 draft pick if he didn't have all the issues to go with him. Arizona Cardinals received a #3 and a #4 for Antwon Boldin. Marshal at most is worth a #2 draft choice. How come all the other NFL teams aren't scrambling for his services?

  • kerry

wow McD is actually doing something smart?! i actually agree with not taking calls. first rounder or nothing. Denevr holds all the leverage here. every other team can F-off or pay the price for Marshall's services.

  • kerry

what Baltimore paid is irrelavant. Marshall is a restricted free agent. and with McD NOT taking calls for a trade outside an offer sheet, teams dont have a choice in paying a first rounder. they do or he stays in Denver. and Boldin is 30 years old and injury prone lately. MArshall is coming off 3 straight 100 catch season along with back to back pro bowls. Marshall is still young also.

  • Jay

Denver Fans you need a reality check. A deal will be made. Brandon doesn't want to be in Denver. If no deal is made all you'll have is a unhappy receiver with little or no production sitting on the bench for a year. Accept a #2 draft choice or have a bust on your hands. And next year he'll be worth even less.

  • guest

so let me check your logic, jay.

brandon stays in denver as a rfa. he turns into a bust because he is unhappy and will sit on the bench.

is that it in a nutshell?

maybe he hears from someone, that as soon as he shapes up his off field, and keeps producing on the field that someone will pay the first rounder for him and he'll get his ticket out of town. if he plays like trash, nobody will want him. it's all fine and good that he has issues with denver, the problem is he's under contract here. if he doesnt play well, every other team in the league will know it and wont want to pay him the big bucks he wants. he has no choice but to be the stud ball player he is and hope that someone wants to give denver a first rounder so he can leave.

  • Jay

Hit a nerve, did i? Where's all the offers?

  • dogheadbrew

It seems your nerve is the one struck. Offers will happen. He's too good for someone not to make a run at him. If Brandon chooses to be cranky and sabotage his season, he only hurts his own payday. He seems to be upset with how a few issues were handled, but he seems to like (not love) the city of Denver and it's fans. And hey enjoys playing football. If he is in a Bronco uni this coming year, I predict a similar year to last year. Cranky about the front office, a few immature moments and some serious production on the field. As a GM, looking at their team and the possibility of adding a 25 year old receiver with 307 catches and 23 TDs in the past three years as your 1st round pick, seems like a nice draft choice. Out of 31 GMs at least one will put a sheet out.

  • guest

free agency is less than 72 hours old. i guess your team is all done and not exploring further options to improve.

  • CB123

Shoot, you might just be right! I'm going to call the FO and let them know this ASAP!! What a close call… us fans should know better, as we have the power to decide on how we handle situations like this. I mean, if it weren't for people like Jay with his incredible insight, I'm not sure WHAT we'd do! Damn…

  • http://openid-provider.appspot.com/whoiskb Kevin

dogheadbrew, I am a bit confused as to what will happen after this year with BM. So if he has one year left on his contract and he is a RFA right now, what will his status be at the end of next year? Is there a chance that he can play the entire next season and then leave and we not get anything in return?

  • dogheadbrew

That's my understanding. However the 2011-12 season could be a lockout, which changes everything. As I get it, if nobody gives Marshall an offer sheet, we get to pay him 7ish mil this year, and he is unrestricted next year. Or someone offers him, say 5 years and 45 mil, and we match it. Then we have him for the duration of the contract. Lastly Some one offers him something we don't want to match, and we take their 1st round pick this year. That is assuming we don't trade him, which McX seems unwilling to do.

  • Nathan

Kevin, at the end of next year, he would be an unrestricted free agent and could leave with no compensation given to us, though Marshall is the type of player that is worthy of the Franchise tag, which we could place on him, giving him 1 years pay of the average of the 5 highest paid wr's in the league, we'd than probably work a trade at that point if we still couldn't come to a long term deal with him or he still wanted out.

As for Jay, Marshall won't hold out, i guarantee that if he's back in Denver. Think he'll get paid the money he wants if he shows teams he is the person the media makes him out to be if he doesn't play a down next year? I'd be hard pressed to see him choosing to do that.

  • Strawdog

Yup, I likes the Bronco's stand on this. If we're going to lose one of the top 5 recievers in the league…a proven, 100 catches, pro bowler…it's a first rounder or nothing. Yup.

  • Nathan

Apparently Cincy's entering the mix and either already has, or is expected to be offering Marshall a contract.

Adam_Schefter: While Denver's restricted free-agent WR Brandon Marshall
spent Sunday in Seattle, his name and future were being discussed in
    Cincinnati.

Adam_Schefter: Bengals have contemplated pursuing Marshall. How serious
the Bengals will be still is a matter of discussion within the
    organization.

  • Doom92

It amazes me how some people do what ever they have to to put others down or simply make others miserable and they are typically the ones that know very little. And they are not always fans from a different team. ;-)…

  • anthony33

Well said kerry. Broncos are absolutely doing the right thing for all the reasons you mention above. It's a 6th or the 14th and a 2nd or 3rd. F the sea chickens.

The worst that could happen is Marshall is a Bronco next year at around $7.2mm (I think). While he won't be totally happy… you can expect another great year because he will then be an unrestricted free agent.

  • denverfanindallas

finally, we have put our foot down on something that makes sense! i'm for clausen for marshall…

  • guest

if we keep him for next year, i bet we tag and trade him next summer.

  • kuruptinthe303

You called him bm! That is hilarious and so appropriate lmfao.

  • guest

I like this. The Seahawks can pay up a first round pick or get bent.

  • sparrowhawk19

People said the same thing last year about Marshall, but if he wants his big money contract he has to play well every year leading up to becoming a restricted first round. His antics have costed him so much already and I think he knows that. Im pissed that he turned down the bronco's 9.5 million per year contract.

  • Nathan

“Marshall also said he sitll very open to staying in Denver and would not be surprised if this process lasts until the NFL draft.”

    -Schefter via Twitter

  • Joseph

    Hey Jay,
Guess what bro? Marshall was unhappy most of last year and what did he do? He got the single game recieving catch record, had 101 catches, and ten td's. Sounds pretty productive to me. Your argument is junk.

  • Paul

I can care less what others think of Brandon Marshall….I post on here all the time as a guest but I am actually a member….Brandon Marshall is a beast on the football field. I went to school with Brandon in Augusta, GA…where he first started playing football and to be honest we all thought he was going to go to the nba because I lie to you not he plays like Lebron James and could really play in the NBA and I would probably bet that one day Marshall might just try and that is just who he is. He is a true friend and a good teammate. My homeboy talks to him about everyday and Marshall loves his team…believe it or not we have a true playmaker and one day hall of fame type player. I have been a Broncos fan for a long time and was excited when we picked him…I was like damn I personally know a Denver Bronco wow and at the same time I knew what he was bringing to the table. If you every get the chance to speak with him on the nfl blog or in person ask him about the AUG…tell him you spoke with his homeboi Boney (Bone-ne)…..you get what you pay for and Brandon is what we have……

  • BroncoBilly

Everyone said the samething last year and he still put up big numbers in only 13 games. If he stays he will play great again next year.

  • gotch123

McD best learn how to hold Brandons hand and play nice with him.

  • gotcha123

Be patient…Seattle is going to put an offer on him, but it will be a few days….Offer will be there as soon as they finish reading Brandons rap sheets.

  • dido

keep brandon he is da best wr in the nfl hands down fck settle

  • DIDO

KEEP BRANDON DONT BE DUM HE IS THE BEST WR IN THE NFL AND I HOPE HE STAYS IN DENVER

  • West Coast Bronco Exile

Seachickens don't deserve a player like Brandon. McD gets nazi with the KID (Cutler), and has scrub rag arms throwing the ball and running the show and Marshall is still the best offensive player on the field. Can Mcd, let Seattle wallow in mediocrity and let's watch Brandon win games.
