With several members of their secondary limited due to injury, and nickelbacks Jack Williams and Alphonso Smith struggling of late, the Denver Broncos agreed to terms with veteran free agent cornerback Ty Law Friday. Pending a physical, the 35-year-old will become a Bronco in time for Monday’s game.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter‘s twitter

A blast from the past filed to ESPN: the Broncos have reached agreement with free-agent CB Ty Law. He has physical tonight, signs after.

Law spent 10 seasons in New England, including three under Josh McDaniels when the current Broncos Head Coach was coaching the Patriots’ secondary. Law also played for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2006 to 2007 in between one-year stints with the New York Jets.

In seven games in 2008, Law tallied 19 tackles, two passes defensed and zero interceptions.

The Broncos have yet to announce the move, but several outlets have confirmed the signing in the minutes since Schefter’s tweet. It’s not clear how the Broncos intend to adjust their roster to make room for Law. We’ll keep you posted.

WOW did not see this coming at all

  • robtink242

this is sheer genius on McDaniels behave Pittsburgh wont see this one coming. If he is in any shape as Vonnie Holiday was when he came in I'm certain he play a solid nickle this season. At least until Smith and Williams gains more experience. there is no doubt they are a bright and pleasant future

who did we have to put on IR or let go of for Mr Law?

  • kerry

wow. the parade of old guys in the secondary just rolls along.

  • MiamiMike

I think this is a good pick up. IF HE IS HEALTHY AND STILL HAS WHEELS!!!
He will help with leadership and has the smarts to help fill in where the rookies are having some issues. It wont be long term so it's not a big deal in terms of long contract. He can play nickel back.

  • ocbronco

Good point Kerry. Our big problem this year is all these old guys in the secondary.

Let's see if he can still play but I'll bet he can still be a good nickel or dime despite his age. If not, who cares?? Can't see how this move could hurt us….

  • herc_rock

Woof. Hopefully he never sees the field.

  • vince_mairne

I think this is a great move on the Broncos part. Jack Williams and Fonz were getting beat by the slot receiver constantly in the nickel package.

  • broncoinva9986

interesting…it is obvious the broncos need to spend a high draft pick on a young safety or possible a D tackle

in what way has our secondary been a problem for us? we have one of the most experienced, veteran secondaries in football. Champ Bailey is still one of the most feared CBs in the league. Ronaldo Hill and Andre Goodman are doing a MUCH better job than Bly and the multiple S we've had. And Dawkins…we wouldn't be 6-1 without him. Say what you want about speed and endurance, but these “old” guys are putting it down week in and week out.

    McD you've done it again!

Solid move. Ty Law is an extremely savvy and physical player that will provide a major boost at the nickel position and add more veteran experience the young guys can learn from.

what move are they making to get him on the roster? Peyton Hillis did not practice and was not seen at the training facilities today – supposedly.

  • broncoNM

This is a good move. We only have 4 CB's on the depth chart so its not a bad idea to have a seasoned vet who can step in right away. Smith has been banged up and we would only have 3 able bodies to play corner if one of those guys goes down. Given the ripe age of our starters its not a bad idea to have an experienced back- up. JWill and Phonz have been playing pretty good… i think this move is purely for depth. Teams like the colts and saints have talented depth at WR with 3, 4, and 5 WR sets along with TEs like Dallas Clark and Shockey. Experienced depth at CB will be important as we push through the 2nd half of the season.

  • mikebirty

my money's on moss or williams making way. Maybe Barrett.

  • katch22

You haters are _____! We only have 4 CB on the roster and this move should have been made awhile ago, Law or somebody else. Looked what happened when Smith went down, we had to have a safety cover a WR. And the old guys in the secondary have been outstanding by far. I still remember Kerri, aka Cutler lover, was saying how bad we were going to be all off season and look. Shut your mouth and enjoy the 6-1 start!!! Broncos finish 12-4 maybe 13-3. OUTSTANDING!!! Go Bronx!
