Each week, Denver Broncos Head Coach Josh McDaniels takes the previous game’s playbook, gives it a once-over, and virtually shreds it in half.
Those plays no longer apply.
“It restarts every week,” Mcdaniels said. “Whatever we’re doing against Baltimore, many of the things we haven’t done to this point.”
It’s fitting that a team that has dressed in blue, orange, white, brown, and yellow at different points this season shows defenses so many different looks. These 2009 Broncos have been regular chameleons.
And while this type of unique gameplanning is true of any NFL team, the Broncos take the idea to the next level. It explains why, week to week, a different playmaker is a focal point of the offense. One week it will be Correll Buckhalter. The next, Brandon Marshall will go off. Against San Diego, Brandon Stokley and Tony Scheffler became the offense’s bread and butter, moving the chains multiple times and scoring a touchdown apiece.
Not only does it keep each week’s opponent on their toes, it gives the offense the ability to make halftime adjustments, a key cog in each Sunday’s gameplan.
Learning a new slate of plays each week has to be difficult, but QB Kyle Orton says offseason work has been key.
(Orton) said he worked hard in the offseason to learn the playbook, and being in the same boat with everyone having to learn an entirely new set of plays every week might actually speed up the process.
“I think it speeds you along from week to week,” Orton said. “Once that game is over with, you have to put it away and you have to move onto the next week because you are not going to have the same game plan. We come in on Monday, watch the film and get all of that behind us starting Tuesday.
“I just think you have got to do a great job of immersing yourself that week in the playbook and making sure that you’ve got that week.”
It’s preparation like this that has been an integral part of the Broncos’ red hot 6-0 start, and a scary proposition for every team that lines up against the orange and blue.
Or whatever colors these Broncos choose to show.
