Basking in our Monday morning elation, I’m not sure how many of you happened upon this gem of an article in the Dallas News that was picked up by ESPN.com. It’s a postgame interview with Terrence Newman, the Cowboy’s CB that was covering Brandon Marshall when he made the game winning catch that went 50+ yards. In said article Terrence alleges that BMarsh should’ve been called for offensive pass interference.
“He grabbed my jersey and threw me to the side,” Newman said. “If that wasn’t a hold, I don’t know what is. I tried to grab him back. I figured either way, we were both going to be called for a hold.”
Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury I would like to submit Exhibit A:
(the close up on Marshall/Newman starts right away, this video is edited)
Newman said it should have been a holding call. When is the last time you heard of offensive holding on a pass play? It’s somewhat counter productive. What Marshall did do was a nice bit of hand fighting when Newman tried to jam him within the 5 yard zone. It’s a far reach to say it was offensive pass interference of any sort. Then what cracks me up is he goes on to proclaim how great his play would’ve been if Marshall had not “held” him.
“I went up for it, and all I know is he had the ball,” Newman said. “I thought I did a good job on him all day. If he doesn’t grab my jersey, the ball is going the other way. I guarantee you that.
“There was nothing I could do about it at the beginning of the play.”
Is this what passes for excuses in Dallas? Why can’t you just come out like a man and say you were beat? That it was a great play? Every corner knows you win some, you lose some. Terrence won big last week with his pick 6 against Carolina. Give Brandon his props and move on man. I hope your position coaches chew you up and down in the film room on this one.
