The Denver Broncos came into their Week 3 match with the Oakland Raiders thinking they were heading into a tough game with an improved division rival.

It wasn’t even close.

Kyle Orton hit Brandon Marshall for an early touchdown, the Broncos defense continued to dominate, and running backs Correll Buckhalter and Knowshon Moreno churned up 198 yards on the ground as Denver rolled over Oakland 23-3.

With the win, the Broncos improve to 3-0 and maintain their first-place position in the AFC West.

The tone of the game was set early as the Broncos marched down the field to the Raiders one-yard line. After the Broncos failed to convert a 4th and 1, Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell threw deep from his own end zone and was intercepted by Renaldo Hill. Hill returned it to the 23, Orton and company finished what they had started, and it was all downhill from there.

Russell was intercepted a second time in the first quarter, this time leading to three Matt Prater points. Again, he threw deep. Russell would learn his lesson, sticking to the dink and dunk thereafter, but it’s a lesson that will carry to other NFL teams this season: you don’t throw deep against this Broncos secondary.

On offense, Orton had another pedestrian, but smart, outing, going 13/23 for 157 yards and a touchdown. It behooved Orton and the Broncos not to test the likes of Nnamdi Asomugha and Michael Huff deep downfield, so Orton delivered short, smart passes that kept the Raiders on their toes.

Not that the Broncos had to go deep: their two-headed running back monster did just fine grinding out the Raiders defense. Rookie Knowshon Moreno scored his first career touchdown and ran for 90 yards on 21 carries, while Correll Buckhalter continued to amaze with several big runs, finishing with 108 yards and 14 carries.

Combined with another stifling defensive effort, the Broncos outplayed the Raiders in all facets to the tune of 372 yards to the Raiders’ 156. The 2009 Denver Broncos have allowed a total of only 16 points in three games.

Clady is the best left tackle in football…period.

  • TheTroglodyte

Wow 3 games into the season and with 1 more win, Kerry can't post for the rest of the year (if he mans up to his bet anyway). This is exciting stuff. Kerry, here is to you rooting for the Broncos to finish the season 0 – 13 so you can brag about right you always are. Cheers Mate!

  • eljbow

    Congrats to Ryan Clady.

  • joe417

so who is not liking our number #12 pick in the last draft now?? Knowshon is the shit. He is a ton of fun to watch. Between him and Buckhalter, we got quite the duo!!
    GO BRONCOS

only upsetting thing about this wooping was the lack of redzone TD's

    Nice game! Nice! =D

    Trogladyte:

say what?? ive never bet you on how the Broncos would finish. the ONLY bet i have on here is against Dee. i never once agreed to any bet with you. as a matter of fact i dont even know who the hell you are. and i challenge you to find where i agreed to a bet with you.

I was talking to one of my buddies that doesn't really like football but he watched the whole game with me and he pointed out something very interesting to me. While watching some of the highlights of all the flashy plays that went for a TD he was saying how Denver is just not flashy like the rest of the teams in the NFL.

I started thinking about and as we were watching the second half I noticed that we simply just get the job done. We're not the Harlem globetrotters but we are 3-0. I'm holding a lot of my judgment until next weekend when we host the Cowboys and if we come out in top, I think that going back to the little basics of football and just 'getting it done' we could be a very very very good team which i would take over the flashiness any day of the week.

Nice game. Good day. Ryan Clady is a beast, congrats buddy… See you guys tomorrow.

I dont wanna hear how weak our opponents have been… This Denver team came on the field and took care of business. Another week and another dominant performance from our defense who collected a couple more turnovers… Our offense put up enough points for a comfortable lead. Good teams win the games they are supposed to… This is a good team. The defense just gets after it! I cant get over it… they make plays and help out the offense the entire game. Couldnt be happier to see the run game show up. That was exactly what Orton needed to relax and start working the middle of the field. It is hard to beat the feeling of watching our broncos dominating an over confident Oakland team. How bout seymour? What a classless move he pulled on clady… looks like he is fitting into oakland real well. I understand that the season only gets harder from here and there is a lot of football to be played but this team has shown in the first 3 weeks that they do not consider this a rebuilding year and denver should be mentioned as serious canidates for AFCW champs. Lets get ready for week 4 the begining of hurricane lane (wk 4-12).

    I’ve been saying for month’s that the Bronco’s will go 11-5 . . . . . maybe I under-estimated . . . . we’ll see . . . . If we are undefeated at the Bye . . . this prediction could be upgraded . . . . .

I have posted before that the defense should not let the opponent score more than 17 points in order to let the offense win the game . . . . ( Tom Jackson quote ) . . . .

    This defense has allowed 16 points all year! . . . . . we are 3-0 . . . . as many had predicted we should be . . . . now that the appetizers have been served . . . . it’s time for some meat and potatoes . . . . .

    We smoked the Raider’s . . . . let’s see if the next three games go our way . . . . . I’m very excited from what I’ve seen so far . . . . this Defense is the Smokin’ Gun . . . .

  • kerry

oh and if there is anyone who can substantiate this ALLEGED bet i supposedly have with the Troglodyte then please by all means post where this agreement supposedly took place.

  • krisburghart

T-money great point. We are all so awed by the flashy, ie Jay and Brandon that we forget that most games are not won by the highlight real plays. Have you listened to the players that coach Mc D has brought in. They actually speak in full sentences and with humility. Not to mention the fact that in one off season he managed to inprove us at almost ever position. At saftey two new starters both improvements both accounted for a turnover today. Linebacker three new starters to go with the one (DJ) we al ready had. A second corner to go with Champ. The d- line no longer wears roller skates to the games and thats just the D. On offense we all new the o-line was great guess what he didn't mess with it but did resign Casey W. Running back , for those PH lovers he is our 3rd best running back and that's a good thing. He will score in short yardage sit uations if he doesen't jump like he did today. We have improved depth wise at both TE and WR. It was good to see that the new culture might actually make a grown man out of B_Marsh. Coach knew that he could not have two gifted cry babies. Just remember all those defenders in NE wer not necessarily the most athletically gifted players the were hard working intellegent men on a mission towards excellence. We still have a way to go but to me this is the kind of team I want kids to watch and I will cheer my ass off.
    Go Broncos

  • jibbons

    Troll food:

Did he say that there was a bet between the two of you, or did he say that you were involved in a bet?

  • WhidbeyBronco

Yeah, our opponents were weak… except the Cinci team who just beat the Packers and Steelers in consecutive weeks….

But I think what we're all seeing here that's REALLY making me believe, is the manner by which we're winning. Sound & solid football. We're a running team again!! That's Broncos football. We're running back strong! Buck & Moreno are looking like one of the best backfield duos in the league & Hillis in the wings. As advertised McD's play calling has been excellent. A good system QB with a REALLY good O-line… and an amazingly improved #1 defense in the league!!

Sure we're likely to struggle in our upcoming schedule, any team would. But the Broncos team I've been watching this year… we're going to be ok. WOW!! I'm pretty freaking happy about this whole 'maybe we won't suck for the next three years!' thing!!!!!

well he didnt really say him and i were involved in a bet between the two of us. but i know for a fact there isnt any bet where i cant post here if the Broncos win 4 games. the only bet i have is with DEE and thats a bet about the Bears. has nothing to do with the Broncos.

  • adamorange

It's nice to have fun watching a defense again! Love it. Good job boys…

  • awesomeaustin

Wow nice win…but the raiders really do suck! So I will not jump up and down yet.

  • Anthony33

Steady improvement in all phases of the game over the past three weeks, that's about all you can ask for. They may struggle a bit in the upcoming weeks, but as I have said many before, this is a MUCH better football top to bottom than it was a year ago.

  • soxbigdog

Glad to see the Orton to Marshall connection finally get going…

  • http://manchester-architects.com T-Money

Will you relax man… it's a blog. Who the hell cares?

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

I think we saw the start of something flashy today, and his name is Knowshell Buckeno.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

On second thought, I like Morhalter better…

  • WhidbeyBronco

Cutler just completed his tenth fourth quarter winning drive in three seasons… Nice work Jay. BTW miss our O-line & WR's much?

  • steeplebomb

Maybe its just me, but watching all of the interviews given by the players and staff, I am constantly struck by how team oriented everyone is. This is a far cry from the Cutler/Marshall press conferences of last year.

    Team first. Love it.

  • steeplebomb

The Raiders sucked in their last two games, but there were times against SD where they looked freakin' scary.

  • MrEast

Tenth 4q winning drive yes. Second straight week where Cutler was helped by missed field goals. I'm waiting to see him win a game when the playoffs are on line.

  • steeplebomb

I really liked this game for a lot of reasons. First off, run defense was amazing. Great job by our front 7. Our secondary is fantastic, and completely under the radar as far as national media coverage. Our run offense has definitely gotten over some hiccups from the last few games –> really important for our game plan as a whole. Moreno is looking better every game. Our O line is showing more discipline and fewer nonsense penalties. Orton was again mistake free.

Disclaimer: I'm super stoked about the game but I think we should still talk about the negatives. Definitely important to keep your weaknesses in mind if you want to win. that said:

As McD stated in his post game interview, we still have a lot to work on. Redzone offense continues to under perform. I don't get it, we've changed everything but the kitchen sink but we still have the same problem on offense. We get to 1st and goal and can't get the TD! No idea why, especially with the run offense being what it is (Hillis anyone?). Also, I'm no coaching guru but sometimes the play calling seems a bit puzzling.
    Thoughts anyone?

  • http://manchester-architects.com T-Money

Just call it the 'Pain Train'

  • http://manchester-architects.com T-Money

    Agreed.

  • http://manchester-architects.com T-Money

Agreed on the Redzone. Needs some much needed love and attention. It should have been 28-0 at halftime.

Secondly, if you are running the ball as well as you did today then you wont see very many plays from eddie or brandon. Brandon had a lot of key grabs today that kept drives alive you should keep in mind. Today was good play calling. HOWEVER, i would like to see them take more shots down the field. Even if they are way overthrown or even out of bounds. You need to stretch the defense especially when you play teams like Green Bay, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Dallas, New England etc.

  • linmoo

totally agree…the play calling in the red zone is baffling. This week, it was clear that we were trying to run the ball up the middle inside the 10 (as opposed to last week when we threw nearly every down). I applaud the change, but it seemed completely predictable for the Raiders. The one thing I miss about Shanny is his ability to get the defense off-balance in the red zone with PA pass or bootlegs. Mcdaniel's seems to be showing *exactly* what is going to be run instead of throwing in some misdirection. And why isn't Hillis getting any passes out on the edge? It just boggles the mind.

Still, it's not like the players are doing everything right. Knowshon missed a sure TD on a stretch play that he took too far to the outside. If he cut that back on the edge, he takes it to the house. Our O-line has not been getting good penetration at the point of attack (I'm looking at you, Weigmann). Orton and Royal need to get on the same page in the endzone. They all need to improve and form a team identity in the red zone.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

I think we'll see the shots down the field starting this week, as I don't expect the games to be as one-sided. It was smart not to challenge the Raiders secondary with deep bombs and the DL with seven-step drops. Beautiful gameplan by McD.

And yes, I'm tooting my own horn for another perfectly predicted gameplan, sue me. :)

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Hillis is baffling, but I think he'll get more work once Larsen gets back on the field. Hochstein's been playing fullback on Hillis runs… let's just say it's been as bad that sounds like it would be.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

I don't think a player at any position in the NFL does their job better than Clady is doing his right now.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Remember preseason last year? Watch out Dallas, Baby T.O.'s coming back!

  • anthony33

    steeplebomb
Agree, the red zone offense is a problem area. I do think it is a function of everyone still learning the complete offense, including Royal. Unless you have a total power running game, which we don't, it gets more difficult to score when you have to make split second decisions on reads (both receivers and QB's). At this point I have no doubt they will work through it.

    Also, I just have a
feeling that it's only a matter of time before Royal explodes…this could be the week cowboy fans.

  • TD30isMVP

I agree with the play calling in the red zone, I guess that is the coach's attitude of “we will line up and run through you”. In New England he showed that he has much more to offer than that, but I think he is establishing a “toughness” attitude rather than flash and tricks right now.
I don't agree with calling out the center who's job it is to get the ball in motion and hold at the point of attack, not penetrate (very few can). Either way, that was a good D-line we just went up against and the boys are looking good.

  • Gary in SD

This game was a good early measuring stick for comparing the Broncos to the “statics”. Denver dominates Oakland and San Diego barely escapes there 2 weeks ago with a win. That after getting majorly punked around.

  • max191

Definitely a great post. Hats off to you! The information that you have provided is very helpful.
