The Denver Broncos came into their Week 3 match with the Oakland Raiders thinking they were heading into a tough game with an improved division rival.
It wasn’t even close.
Kyle Orton hit Brandon Marshall for an early touchdown, the Broncos defense continued to dominate, and running backs Correll Buckhalter and Knowshon Moreno churned up 198 yards on the ground as Denver rolled over Oakland 23-3.
With the win, the Broncos improve to 3-0 and maintain their first-place position in the AFC West.
The tone of the game was set early as the Broncos marched down the field to the Raiders one-yard line. After the Broncos failed to convert a 4th and 1, Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell threw deep from his own end zone and was intercepted by Renaldo Hill. Hill returned it to the 23, Orton and company finished what they had started, and it was all downhill from there.

Russell was intercepted a second time in the first quarter, this time leading to three Matt Prater points. Again, he threw deep. Russell would learn his lesson, sticking to the dink and dunk thereafter, but it’s a lesson that will carry to other NFL teams this season: you don’t throw deep against this Broncos secondary.
On offense, Orton had another pedestrian, but smart, outing, going 13/23 for 157 yards and a touchdown. It behooved Orton and the Broncos not to test the likes of Nnamdi Asomugha and Michael Huff deep downfield, so Orton delivered short, smart passes that kept the Raiders on their toes.
Not that the Broncos had to go deep: their two-headed running back monster did just fine grinding out the Raiders defense. Rookie Knowshon Moreno scored his first career touchdown and ran for 90 yards on 21 carries, while Correll Buckhalter continued to amaze with several big runs, finishing with 108 yards and 14 carries.
Combined with another stifling defensive effort, the Broncos outplayed the Raiders in all facets to the tune of 372 yards to the Raiders’ 156. The 2009 Denver Broncos have allowed a total of only 16 points in three games.
