Denver showed why it continues to be a House o’ Horrors for the Cleveland Browns, as the Broncos‘ defense shut the Browns down en route to a 27-6 thumping of their longtime AFC rival.
While the offense produced over 400 yards and didn’t commit a turnover, the defense dominated an AFC opponent for the second week in a row. Elvis Dumervil tied a Broncos franchise record with four sacks, and Andra Davis tallied 10 tackles against his former team. A Darcel McBath interception clinched the game, and the Broncos moved to 2-0 on the season.
The Browns were hanging around, down only one touchdown in the fourth quarter, when the Broncos offense caught up to its defense. Kyle Orton was having another pedestrian outing before hitting Jabar Gaffney for a 49-yard gain in the fourth quarter. Peyton Hillis finished the drive with a two-yard touchdown run, and it was fair sailing from there.
There were struggles, though. Orton had some inaccurate passes and was less than 50% accuracy at halftime (he finished with 19 for 37, just over 50%). Matt Prater was also inaccurate, missing two field goals in moderate winds that could have put the Browns away early. There was some questionable playcalling in the first half, especially at the goalline (three straight throws from the spread formation? Are you serious?), and clock/timeout management was also iffy early.
None of that mattered by the second half, though. The Broncos defense didn’t quit. The Browns defense did. Eric Mangini, the other Belichick disciple clearly outplayed you in his first season as Head Coach.
The Broncos didn’t need a miracle to put this week’s Ohio team away; good old fashioned defense and hard-nosed running did the Browns in.
The Broncos turn their attention to Oakland and the 1-1 Raiders, hoping to stretch their AFC West lead over them, the 1-1 Chargers and the 0-2 Chiefs.
