Denver showed why it continues to be a House o’ Horrors for the Cleveland Browns, as the Broncos‘ defense shut the Browns down en route to a 27-6 thumping of their longtime AFC rival.

While the offense produced over 400 yards and didn’t commit a turnover, the defense dominated an AFC opponent for the second week in a row. Elvis Dumervil tied a Broncos franchise record with four sacks, and Andra Davis tallied 10 tackles against his former team. A Darcel McBath interception clinched the game, and the Broncos moved to 2-0 on the season.

The Browns were hanging around, down only one touchdown in the fourth quarter, when the Broncos offense caught up to its defense. Kyle Orton was having another pedestrian outing before hitting Jabar Gaffney for a 49-yard gain in the fourth quarter. Peyton Hillis finished the drive with a two-yard touchdown run, and it was fair sailing from there.

There were struggles, though. Orton had some inaccurate passes and was less than 50% accuracy at halftime (he finished with 19 for 37, just over 50%). Matt Prater was also inaccurate, missing two field goals in moderate winds that could have put the Browns away early. There was some questionable playcalling in the first half, especially at the goalline (three straight throws from the spread formation? Are you serious?), and clock/timeout management was also iffy early.

None of that mattered by the second half, though. The Broncos defense didn’t quit. The Browns defense did. Eric Mangini, the other Belichick disciple clearly outplayed you in his first season as Head Coach.

The Broncos didn’t need a miracle to put this week’s Ohio team away; good old fashioned defense and hard-nosed running did the Browns in.

The Broncos turn their attention to Oakland and the 1-1 Raiders, hoping to stretch their AFC West lead over them, the 1-1 Chargers and the 0-2 Chiefs.

I think this picture from NFL.com should be the next caption picture:

  • MIAbronco

there is no reason that the broncos should be given loses already on there 8 game stretch of horrors, the broncs look like a solid team with a dominating defense. the broncos really could win the afc west this year. there is not one team right now that jumps out a clear champion, the broncs have a good chance.

Also, I was in a club last night in south beach and T-pain comes in with his entourage and sits down right next to us, now if I could only remember last night…

  • flbronc

how about that second to last cleveland drive… nice work by the broncos pass defense, knocked down three passes (counting the one that hit dj in the back). havent seen that in a long time out of our defense. i’m liking the attitude that they are playing with right now. good win.

  • kerry

i liked our second half offense. when we started using the ZBS and the run to setup the pass, the offense took off and played well. that should be a hint to McDaniels. i didnt like how Marshall was on the sideline for the first half and when Hillis fumbled, he got put in the doghouse until the fourth quarter. a very good second half offensive performance. defense was very good. especially Dumervil who should probably be arrested for assaulting Brady Quinn so many times.

Chargers lost, we won. oh and hey DEE……THE BEARS WON!!!! yeah beat the defending champs. all of a sudden our bet ISNT looking so good for you huh?!?! if they can beat the Champs, they can beat anyone! 5 more Bears victories and i win!

  • robtink242

I really didnt get Marshall on the side line. Even if you dont want to throw it to him his presence demands attention. It was in the second half when ole noodle arm grew balls and throw the football. Now to make our offense even better get Royal and Marshall the ball more often and keep pounding the ball with Moreno/Buckhalter combo using the ZBS. But very great performance at least we dominated a game i believe we should have.

  • kerry

yeah the real test is gonna come next week against the Raiders who can run the ball well. i mean JaMarcus Russell shouldnt be a worry. he couldnt complete a pass unless he was given a cheeseburger for completeing the pass.

  • Awesome, Austin

Wow I think the media is going to have some serious crow to eat after today…writing the broncos off as “who cares about them” If I was McD I would have that quote up everywhere to remind players that this season is what they make it and give them an, us vs the whole world mentality. Winning always settles the drama down…shame the media will simply say at this point “the broncos have won the only two games that they will win this year.” Dawkins is a beast!

  • http://www.pennington.net/ mikepenn

Good team performance overall… the D really showed their stuff creating turnovers and sacks… that was exciting to watch. Orton did alright but some of his decisions still looked kindof questionable… fortunately the D brought it to the Browns. Way to go Broncos!

  • soxbigdog

well.. if last week was a fluke.. then this is the first true victory for the ‘new broncos’… game balls all around… Elvis Dumervil was a monster today…

  • stav

wow, no bitching about us winning this week? Shocker. Easy on Orton, they’ve dropped a shit load of balls on him the first two weeks. I don’t see how they don’t dominate the Raiders the same way next week. I’m not looking past next week, but we all know week four is when the litmus test begins for this team. Here’s what I’m thinking if this D is legit:

    At Oakland – W
    Dallas at home – I’m not convinced, but…1st loss – L
New England at home – Brady looks rattled & NE D is soft – W
At San Diego – They are just better than us – L
    At Baltimore – too tough – L
Pitt at home – another team I’m not convinced about they did win the SB – L
    At Washington – a joke – W
San Diego at home – unfortunately – L
Giants at home – Dline is way too tough – L
At KC – gimme that one – W
At Indy – Peyton owns us – L
Raiders at Home – gimme that – W
At Philly – biggest shock of the season – W
    KC at home – W

9-7, not enough for the playoffs but enough for all of us to be satisfied and to tell everyone else where they can shove it with their 3-13 and 5-11 predictions.

  • meomy

If Denver can handle the raiders next week I’d say Broncos have a very good shot at winning their division. D is looking pretty good. Run stop is very good. Pass D could use a little help from the front 3 putting a little bit more consistent pressure on the QB.

Orton is getting better. The one thing he has done well is not throw an interception.

Prater is starting to remind me of Cutler. He can come up big and save the game… but he hurts us just as much at time. One of these games this year he is going to cost us a close game on a bad kick. I’d much rather see a kicker who nails all their kicks under 40 but who can’t hit from over 45.

  • Bobby

John Clayton’s predicted AFC West stndings after the regular season:

    AFC West W L
    San Diego 12 4
    Kansas City 4 12
    Oakland 4 12
    Denver 3 13

Apparently we’re going to go 1-13 from here on out, sorry guys…

That is what I talking about. Great game…all around.

  • MikeY55

wait sorry i’m confused what is the bet for dee and kerry if the broncos win 4 kerry can’t talk on here anymore and if the bears win 4 dee can’t talk please someone clarify because it will be very interesting to see how this lil bet plays out

  • http://www.webmdreviews.com Robert

Kerry, your reasoning is the Bears beat the Steelers so they can beat any team? How stupid is that statement??? I mean seriously. The Bronco’s beat the Bengals who beat the Packers who beat the Bears who beat the Steelers who beat the Titans who lost to the Texans who were blown out by the Jets. Therefore the Chiefs can beat anyone.

It’s called any given Sunday, |\|00B.

    Mmmm… crow. Tasty!

Overall i thought the game was great! Love the D in Denver! Go Broncos!!

  • broncoNM

I am astounded by the play of the defense… attacking the ball, getting turnovers and sacks… The defense is setting the tone. It started early when they made a stand After hillis’s fumble. Our record aside this team seems to be playing with more brains and more heart. The Defense allowed Orton to grab another W. Ill admit its hard to get used to Orton’s playing style. Because it is the complete opposite of cutler. We will probably see more drives stall in the red zone with orton but less turnovers too. Im impressed that he has yet to turnover the ball But its clear that the success of orton and this team depends on the defense on run game.

  • http://broncotalk.net dee

    Kerry

Its one win, Pittsburgh has looked bad 2 weeks in a row. And yes I haven’t forgotten out bet, and my Denver prediction of 10-6 is looking pretty good as well ….

The Steelers should be 0-2 , Cutler didnt make a mistake today, good for him…. but I’ve seen enough of him to know when the chips are down he’ll crack.

    Dee
For the record, in his three years in the NFL Jay Cutler now has led his team to NINE (9!) victories in the fourth quarter pressure!

What was that bet exactly? Sounds to me that either Dee or Kerry will have to quit posting here? Sounds like a win win!

  • http://www.kellyleephipps.com Kelly in Carolina

We’re closing in on perfection! The defense is strong! The offense is versatile and packed with talent. By game five against the Patriots we’ll find our stride and everything will start to synch. How exciting! Glad we pulled away after halftime….Brady Quinn is thinking ” I should’a asked to e traded to Denver!”

and the KoolAid begins to trickle in…

  • http://birty.blogspot.com mikebirty

what! Where’s the moaning? This isn’t right!

My first thought – when did we last get a win this comfortable. All the ones i can remember from last year were still in the balance at the 2 min warning.

Everyone was brill. Defense, offense, special teams – well maybe not prater. Dawkins, davis, doom – immense. The running in the second half was just superb. I loved seeing all those big carries.

Now here’s the reality check. The bengals are not good. The browns will draft sam bradford they were that bad. Oakland are bad. The broncos are starting against three of the worse teams in football. If they are 3-0 the job is only just beginning. How many teams in the history of the nfl have gone 3-0 and missed the play offs (rhetorical).

They’re playing as well as i knew they could and i’m over the moon at the win (once the stupid nfl game pass worked) and i too still think 10 wins is possible but lets not get carried away. We’re 1/8 th into the season. Still, i’d rather be 1/8th through our season than oakland’s.

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

    WB

It wouldn’t be bad losing if I didnt have to read your dribble on Cutler … 4th quarter comebacks huh , I seemed to remember trailing in the 4th quarter last year against Buffalo AT HOME .. with the PLAYOFFS on the line, and Cutler coughing up an PICK in the red zone … to pretty much seal the game.

He’s cost us more games then he won and it’ll be the same in Chicago.

  • http://www.search-this.com mark

Man, you beat two teams from Ohio and suddenly people are buying as much stock as they can in Orange Crush…

  • jbirchbronco

Bobby = Best Post of the Day!!

  • herc rock

Yeah, let’s relax on the division title crap. Let’s wait until we play an actual NFL team.

  • broncoNM

We have played 2 NFL teams and beat them both. You guys need to learn how to enjoy a win. Who cares if it was the browns and the bangels. The defense and special teams coverage looks much betther from last year (cribbs was a non-factor yesterday!) and the O improved from week 1 to week 2 and we are 2-0. Dont be so quick to write off a win… they are hard to get in this league… ask the lions. We shouldnt enjoy a win because it was the browns? Gimme a break. The fact that we controlled the game in all 3 areas for 4 Qrts should be something to talk about. Dont think we should toss aside our first 2 opponents… Cinn put up points and yards against a tough GB Defense and Cle hung up 20 points on a tough minn Defense last week. Together they only put up 13 on the good guys. Nolan & co. are getting it done. The run D will be tested next week in Oak but if we can get pressure on russel i can see our secondary makin plays and increasing that turnover ratio.

  • http://www.search-this.com mark

@broncoNM – enjoy the win, by all means, but let’s not start talking division titles. I have them winning their first 3 games… then losing 8 straight…

  • dbroncos

I dont think you can equate “drinking the kool-aid” to being very happy about winning two games we were suppose to win. We dont have to been doom and gloom about the team. It is ok to be a little excited.

  • kerry

    Robert:

what the matter man?? Cutler beats the Steelers and you cant stand it can you?? i mean it was IMPOSSIBLE for the Bears to beat the Steelers right, yet Cutler stepped up and they won the game. so quit your bitching about what i say. just suck it up and realize they beat the Champs and there isnt a god damn thing you can do about it. well except whine. of course if the Bears lost then it would be all about how badly Culter sucks and he is a baby and blah blah blah. he rebounds from a bad game and plays well and beats the champs. get over it. and its perfectly obvious they can beat anyone. even without Urlacher their defense is still stout. they were leading the Packers until that long TD pass. so they could just as easily be 2-0 and then your womanly cries would be worse. i talked nothing good about our team, then you find something to whine about anyway. STFU!

  • kerry

and everybody, for the record, the bet between Dee and i is if the Bears win 5 or less, i stop posting here. if the Bears win 6 or more, Dee stops posting here.

  • Blind Faith

Whoa- blogs are not for weak sisters. I love this stuff.

Here’s a comment that will probably get me crucified, but here goes. If (or when) Cutler and the Bears win the Super Bowl(s), I’ll admit to myself that Cutler was certainly worth all of the baggage that he brought with him. Someone like me would say that his issues that he brings with him will divide and not unite enough to win a championship. Case in point: Terrell Owens, Ochocinco, etc.

As I said, I could be woefully wrong. Let the crucifixion begin…

p.s. Dee and kerry, two loyal Broncotalk bloggers, making a bet like this one. I love it…

  • Rob Bronco

The Chargers are clearly struggling. They BARELY beat the Raiders and got pounded by a more physical Ravens team. Their defense is worse than ours through 2 games this season. I think we can take 1 out of 2 games from them. But I’m not focused on that right now.

Right now I’m preparing for some ass kicking of the lowly Chokeland Raiders. They didn’t deserve to beat KC.

  • Matt

Cutler has Reed to thank for that win.

If he hadn’t missed two field goals, Cutler would be 0-2.
