The Denver Broncos have named seven players as their 2009 team captains. Per Frank Schwab of the Colorado Springs Gazette, the captains are (drum roll please)…

Kyle Orton Casey Wiegmann Daniel Graham Champ Bailey Brian Dawkins Mario Haggan WesleyWoodyard

Tada! Oh, that doesn’t help? Here you go:

2009 DENVER BRONCOS TEAM CAPTAINS
OFFENSE DEFENSE S/T
QB Kyle Orton CB Champ Bailey ILB Wesley Woodyard
C Casey Wiegmann S Brian Dawkins
TE Daniel Graham OLB Mario Haggan

Six players will wear the team captain’s patch this season. Woodyard is likely S/T captain in name only, but still, it’s an honor for the second year undrafted player. Haggan was awarded a contract extension Tuesday.

what’s mario haggan eating? Whatever it is, i want some. From unlikely to survive camp to captain, starter and extension.

So this means Orton is starting? I am terrified about his hand, I think I might sleep easier if it was Simms starting instead. I can only imagine how bad is accuracy will be with the glove and injury. I am hoping for the best but I do not want this injury to lead to a few INT’s. This is a very very important game for setting the tone for the rest of the season. NFL is almost back!

Was Orton named a captain for our offense or is he an honorary captain for our weekly opponents defense?

  • Terry

I am happy with the way this team is going. The more captain the better keeps the players motovated when they are honored.

What is there a little league rule out there I don’t know of? Does everyone get to be a captain? Whatever happen to the good ol’ days of 3 captains? One offense, Defense, and ST’s. They should just send the whole team out there for the coin flip.

I’m stoked for Woodyard. I’m a big fan of his.

how many captains does this team need?? and how the hell is Haggan a captain? did he get a hold of the pictures of MCDaniels and the goat that helped Jordan keep his job?

Mario Haggan really surpises me! I don’t know much about this guy, he must not be 2 bad…

lol @ Kerry i heard Marshall has a copy to thats why new contract talk is under way. But i dont see Haggan beat out DJ Williams. I’m not sure about Orton as well at least him being captain might not really be a team choice.

Yeah D-Will is a big surprise to me. Depending on how this season goes, I can see him on his way out of Denver too.

Hagan earned the captaincy through hard work, vocal enthusiasm and most importantly, his teammates respect. The team votes on the captains. So they must really like Hagan’s attitude. I think it’s awesome.

Another thing this shows me is that DJ Williams doesn’t have what it takes to lead. He’s never been the Al Wilson type. He quietly does his job (until he makes a tackle and acts as if he just scored a touchdown to win the game) and focuses on his position only for the most part. This is just another ingredient missing from our D last season. What this says to me is that the other players on the team know he’s not fit to lead a defense. Let’s hope his skills remain despite this blow to his ego.
