While there’s little doubt Knowshon Moreno will be the Broncos‘ starting tailback come Week One of the regular season, a distinct possibility has emerged that he’ll be the starting tailback for Week One of the preseason as well.
Since the Broncos leave on a plane to San Francisco Thursday to play the 49ers Friday, the news is particularly significant and late-breaking.
The scoop comes from Jason La Canfora (the NFL Network’s new Adam Schefter), who dropped the small but noticeable tidbit on his NFL.com blog. La Canfora states that Moreno has progressed enough in camp to get the starting nod:
It was hard to spend any time at Broncos camp earlier this week and not come away impressed with rookie RB Knowshon Moreno… he will go in as the starter in the preseason opener.
However, the Broncos released their first depth chart only on Monday, and Moreno isn’t listed as the starter – in fact, he’s listed as the team’s fourth tailback. Head Coach Josh McDaniels even said Tuesday that the depth chart isn’t a ranking for the season as much as a reference to the team’s first preseason game: “That is not our depth chart. We don’t have any starters right now. We have competition everywhere. The league mandates that we put out a roster for who is going to start in the first preseason game.”
Hearing this news is exciting, but there’s something about the passive, matter-of-fact manner in which La Canfora breaks the news that has me skeptical. I guess we’ll get our first test on the accuracy of Schefter 2.0 this Friday.
