Kyle Orton Named the Starting Quarterback

Head coach Josh McDaniels officially named Kyle Orton the 2009 starting quarterback for the Broncos Saturday as they prepared for the final day of mandatory off-season workouts coming up tomorrow.  Orton had been battling with former Bucs QB Chris Simms.  McDaniels felt that naming Orton the starter in June will help him develop throughout training camp being “the guy” rather than battling for starting spot.

“There’s a lot of difficult aspects about what we ask our quarterback to do in our offense and Kyle has really grasped some of them more quickly than Chris did”

McDaniels did go on to say that he told Kyle that this is in no way set in stone and that there are no roster locks at this point in the year and he will have to continue to play well throughout camp:

“I just think it puts them in a little bit of a pressure situation where now one of them has it and has to keep it and the other one has to get it,”

“They’re still going to compete with each other and I expect the competition to be the same that it’s been. They both have great attitudes and know that nothing’s determined in June.”

This call by the new coach definitely makes sense.  Naming Orton the starter going in before camp start will allow Kyle become more familiar with the offense and get a better feel for the guys he’ll be throwing to on Sunday.  Sounds like McDaniels did not want any sort of QB controversy through camp, putting that drama to rest right away.

    Sorry about the slowness of the site guys, Kyle and I are off to a GQ after party in New York though (seriously). Hope Orton can lead us to the promise land.

    Well, hope kyle gets to know eddie royal and Brandon Stokely well. With Marshal acting like I feared he would it makes sense for Coach McDaniels to make nice with Tony Sheffler. The head scratchers from this off season are starting to make a little sense. Go Kyle Orton! Go Coach McDaniels, and Go Broncos!

    Do you think this was forced by Mr. Bolwen? He might of told McDaniels annouce the starter, which will bring a whole new level of clarity to this team.

    I like this descion but i’m not a fan of Orton yet. He will prove what he has during the preseason.

    Kyle Orton will be a fine QB for the Bronco’s . . . I’ve said this in other blogs . . . .

    He played 15 games last year and threw for 2,972 yds. . . . 18 touchdowns and 12 Int’s . . . . the glaring statistic was he got sacked 27 times . . . . TWENTY SEVEN . . . so the guy had to run for his life and made a few bad throws in doing so . . . .

    If he had played 16 games and had a decent offensive line in front of him . . . things might have been different for da’ Bears . . . who ended up 9-7 and could have gone further . . .

    Orton did not have Cutler’s stats . . . and maybe will never have the pinpoint precision that Jay had ( there are only a handful of QB’s in that category ) . . .

    But now that they have switched teams . . . it will be very interesting to watch Jay run for his life and Kyle have the time to pick and choose . . . or give the ball to Moreno or Buckhalter and let the pound take its toll . . . .

    I don’t want this to be a comparison argument between Orton and Cutler . . . . One’s history and the other is reality . . . .

    I’ve said in many blogs that I feel the Bronco’s will go 11-5 and shock many teams along the way! . . . .

    I’m just so jazzed for this season to start . . . I used to think if all we could do was to win both games against the Raiders . . . it would be a good season . . .

    Now I want to sweep the West . . . no more of the feeling we will lose at Arrowhead just because! . . .

    I definitely want to wipe the crap-eating grin off of Phillip River’s face and the bunch of self-effacing narcissistic punks he play’s with . . . ( oh . . . did I let a little attitude out ) . . . . Period!

    Believe it or not I think we have a better tandem at QB than we did last year.

    I am excited to see what how Orton does with more talent surrounding him and an offence that fits his skill set.

    I thought from the second I read this at the DP that maybe Marshall talked to Bowlen and McDaniels and told him that it was retarded to not know who the QB was, and that that was one of many things that needed to be fixed before his contract gets addressed.

    Pete . . . what BM want’s addressed or not is the furthest thing from McD’s mind . . .

    What is on his mind that if BM doesn’t get his ass into mandatory practice and at least pretend he is fired up and creating camaraderie between himself and his teammates that he will sit and watch until the right deal comes along and find himself on the fast train out of BroncoLand . . .

    like I’ve said before . . . if I could trade with the Cardinal’s straight up for Bolden . . . . I’d be thrilled . . . .

    BM is not in a negotiating position . . . period. . . . the only reason he think’s he is was because of Jay Cutler . . . and he caught the last train out of town . . . .

    Press it far enough . . . and some other team will end up with the bad press . . . .

    I think that Orton was the right choice. I was excited about Simms at first but my excitement wore off rather quickly.

    Im very excited for this year… but none of my excitement comes from the QB position, sorry jcampb but all the tandems in the world are never going to do you any good. Look at Cleveland (Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn) and look at the Bears in previous years (Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman) these are just 2 examples but the 2 party system never works, if you dont have one true starter you definatley dont have 2. end of discussion. Kyle Orton is not the answer, weve taken huge strides in the right direction but we have to realize this is a rebuilding year bottom line. I was pissed when Cutler got the boot, but i understand both sides and it was best for everyone. There was a huge lack of talent this year at QB in the draft so there was no reason in trying for a first round QB (both of the MS are not going to ever reach the hall of fame… they only look good against one another in a draft) and the rest of the talent was very subpar. We made the right decision with Knowshon. Next years outlook on QB potential is much better and our coaching staff realizes this (McCoy, Bradford, Tebow) all of which could very likely drop to
    our 1st round and be legitimate picks at QB (although i have doubts with Tebow, not the precision passer he needs to be for the
    NFL and the NFL has never favored lefties) BMarsh is not looking good right now for wearing blue and orange next year, (unfortunatley he may have a onepiece orange suit and thats it…) We will be solid at reciver still tho and the running game finally has some firepower. Realistically Orton is not gonna hit 1000 yards on any reciever we have and if he hits 2500 collectively, ill be very happy, but the reality is every QB we signed is a fill in and not the future, were gonna pound the ball this year and develope from the outside in. That is MCDs approach on building a team, on both sides of the ball we are powering up on the outside and the inside is where we are going bulk up on slowly. we strengthed our recivers, TE and secondary in the draft, and next year is were we start going inside. Then we can afford to be selective and take one player to make 2 more that we have on the field more effective. once we have a strong outside thats when we can start making moves for strong inside players because they make what we have on the outside that much better. if we can beat the chefs and the faders and then split SD I will be happy and ready for 2011 but either way bleed orange and blue, GO BRONCOS!!!!!

    Think McD and Orton will be spending some time together? Both of them know the only way this will work is if they spend every second together getting this system down. I think Orton is more than adequate if he can handle the system. Our O line should allow him to check down to his 2nd, 3rd and 4th options. We have serious talent at WR and RB… Our receivers are talented and experienced. I believe Orton understands that he has a great opportunity. He does not need to be a superstar…he just needs to get the ball out of his hands and give it to the talent around him.

    well of course Orton got the job. its not that he was the better of the 3, he just didnt suck as much as Simms or badstarter, i mean Brandstater.

    We will see Brandstater in pre season and not again until next year when he comes in for just a little taste of a real game as McD slowly slips the saddle on him , after all he is a Bronco .

    Thank GOd if he named Simms the starter i would almost snap.. Not only is simms not played in a year but is a lefty. Kyle is coming off a good year with a bad offensive line and receivers.

    Kerry that was low. But i haven’t heard a thing about our draft picks. remember last year how the vets kept talkin about Royal, Clady and the guys. And they certainly didnt dissapointed. Even our undrafted rookies showed up Josh Bell and Woodyard. Which makes me wonder why we drafted so many DB’s but i’m not coaching.

    this season not a wiff. IDK i hope they show up.

    I never bought the ‘stiff competition from simms’ stuff. i think that mcd was just saying that to push orton, and send a msg to the team that you have to work to get your spot. he is still sending that msg, which is fine by me. we’ll be ok with orton, and dont have to make clady switch sides- so to me it’s the right move.

    yeah ive looked everywhere online to see news about our Rookies and i havent found anything except that Ayers is always the last one off the field because he is working on his INT tactics. another i read on the DP was that Orton threw 3 INT’s in practice.

    last year we always heard the great things about the guys you mentioned. now nothing. which dosnt bode well. Jack Williams is still ahead of Smith on the CB depth chart. that definetly doesnt sound good.

    Who cares if we haven’t heard a huge fuss about the rookies? It’s not even training camp yet, you won’t hear a lot. Also who cares if Jack Williams is above Alphonso Smith? It’s not even training camp. Don’t try to take a negative spin on everything.

    Commando- All I’m saying is that if one goes down the other is better than who we had last year. I would take Simms over Ramsey anyday.

    Most of the things we heard last year about the rookies was during training camp. Most coaches (including ours) will tell you, it is hard to really see the impact in shorts. I think I remember reading that training camp will be open, so maybe we will start hearing more about the rookies then.

    Well no kidding Orton is named the starter. Simms being a lefty and supposedly McD hand picking Orton as the best QB option available during the trade talks for Cutler this was already a done deal. I think this would have been a huge disaster if we even let this debate continue, of course Orton is the starter, always was.

    Dude has a great opportunity here in Denver and with only 1 year on his contract I for one am really excited to see what he can do. McD is a QB genius, O Line, actual WR’s, catching RB Moreno and bruiser RB Hillis, and killer TE’s Orton will look a lot better than he ever did in CHI. Best of luck Orton. Go Neck Beard!
