The Denver Broncos selected running back Knowshon Moreno with their first of two first round draft picks today. They followed that up by addressing the defense, selecting DE/LB Robert Ayers out of Tennessee.

Ayers, at 6’3″ and 272 lbs., has been stamped with the dreaded “one year wonder” tag, but has a lot of upside. The NFL Network’s Mike Mayock (whom I trust above and beyond anyone ESPN employs) called Ayers his “favorite” defensive player in this year’s draft and said, three years from now, Ayers could be regarded as the best player taken in the draft overall. You can view Robert Ayers video highlights here.

The Broncos’ next selection is the 16th pick in the second round, 48th overall. Quotes from Ayers after the jump.

On what Broncos said about the position he’ll be playing

“The Broncos, they always talked to me about playing outside linebacker. But I also feel like I have the versatility to play any position. So, whichever (position) they (the Broncos) ask me to play, I’m going to play. Mostly, (Linebackers) Coach (Don) Martindale was the one who was scouting me, and he’s known me the longest, so I’m sure that’s the position I’m going to play. But when I get there, I can probably play any position. But that’s what I’ll be in, is outside linebacker.”

On excitement of playing in Denver

“Oh, real excited. I was telling my family, I think Denver is the team waiting just for me. When I met with (Linebackers) Coach (Don) Martindale, he pretty much told me I was his guy. But you try to not get your hopes too high. You try to just go along with it, try not to get too high. When the coach called me, I saw 303 (area code) come up on my phone and I knew who it was and I was excited because I think I fit very well in this team.”

On what changed in between his junior and senior years

“Not much really changed. I was right there with a lot of other guys in the country, I just didn’t start. I had a good junior year and my senior year is when I really started getting a lot of publicity and I wasn’t really trying (to generate publicity). So, I think it’s really a lot of hard work and I’m just truly blessed.”

On where he is right now

“I’m in New Jersey with my family, up in north New Jersey. I’m just at a barbecue with my family.”

On when his family arrived in New Jersey

“I’m really from New Jersey. I’ve lived here since I was about 16 and this is my home. Sacramento is my home too, but (New Jersey) is where I grew up and where I get most of my roots from. But both places are my home.”

On how playing in Southeastern Conference will help in playing in the NFL

“I think it’s a real good conference. There’s a lot of good players, some even got drafted today. (RB) Knowshon’s (Moreno) going to be in Denver with me; he’s a (University of) Georgia guy, SEC guy. There’s a lot of guys that come out of the SEC in the draft. I’m pretty sure a lot more guys (from the SEC) are going to get picked.”

On dropping back into coverage on some occasions

“My coach will tell you I was versatile enough to where I could do most of those things. In my game at (University of) Tennessee, I’ve done some of those things. I’ve dropped out (into coverage) from every position. So, I feel like I’m ready to play whatever they ask me to play.”

On (RB) Knowshon Moreno

“We played against Knowshon for the past year. He was the best back in the country, by far. He’s the first back selected. He’s a hard runner; he ‘s one of the hardest runners I’ve ever played against. He reminds me of a Cadillac (Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Carnell Williams) who came out of Auburn three or four years ago. He’s just that type of guy, he’s a competitor. When I talked to Coach (Josh) McDaniels, that’s what he told me, he wants guys that are going to compete, hard workers and smart players. So that’s what he’s going to get with Knowshon and that’s what he’s going to get with me.”

Ayers is a good pick, but we should have picked a D-player at 12 and possibly (I would have still preferred a D-player) an O-player at 18. At 12 we could have had Orakpo or even someone like Maualuga. We need a Defensive identity and one of those guys could have provided that nasty attitude.

  • Garrett

    good pick

  • soxbigdog

Nice pick.. but Ayers and Orakpo would have been the anchors of a great D-Line

  • MichiganBronco

We had one weakness on offensive last year – RB – McD said during his press conference that he was taking an offensive player – now we are blanced!

  • ryan

I like it, and I think psychologically, if you would have told me would would get Ayers at 12 and Moreno at 18 I would have been happy. I think most of us were just so pissed off at the Moreno pick because it felt like we were going to miss out on all the big time d-line players.

  • milehighs

    idiots

  • Matt

I hate to say it… but I agree with milehighs for once.

this draft really has me puzzled, especially the 2010 1st round pick trade…

  • Tom9798

    Matt . . . . I have to agree . . . the spirit and context of milehighs comment is 100% correct . . .

Giving up a 2010 1st rd. pick to move up to #37 for a 5’9 CB . . . this is the 2nd most insulting thing to passing on Orakpo at #12 . . .

  • Tom9798

    ESPN just picked their winner’s and loser’s in the draft . . . Everyone picked the Bronco’s as a loser . . . what a surprise . . .

    You pass up Orakpo for our 10th running back . . . choose Ayers instead of Maualuga . . . and trade up to #37 . . . that’s right . . . we didn’t trade up to #8 or #9 to get Ragi . . . another position we really needed . . . we trade up to #37 . . . and it get’s better! . . .

    We gave up a 2010 #1 draft pick to MOVE UP to #37 . . . and did we take Brace . . . another position which we needed . . . no, not the Bronco’s . . . we got a 5′9 CB . . . Brace got chosen by the Patriots . . . what a surprise . . . .

It was Belichick that told McD to always pick the best running back first . . . of course he didn’t mean THIS SEASON FOOL!

    So, we ask . . . where is the 3-4 defense? . . . where is our NT? . . . where is our pass-rushers? . . . how are we different than the team that S.D. scored 52 points against us in total humiliation? . . . .

    ESPN has no clue . . . either do I . . . do you ?

I just think it demonstrated a novice coach/GM combo that paniced. I think they had their board and couldn’t wait for the draft to come to them. With a few more drafts and some maturity things should improve. It was almost the exactly like a rookie QB that has a problem because the game is too fast. I think the draft was too fast for MacD and the Xman.

  • cousin

Excellent choice. Congratulations to my cousin

Awesome pick. Mike Mayock is seldom wrong, lets hope that streak continues.

Tom – Brian Orakpo fits as a 4-3 end not really an OLB. Knowshon Moreno is insanely talented and is going to be a great relief for whoever is the QB this year.

  • SuperfanDB

I wish most of you would become Raider fans. Time to call out the lie about our offense last year. We were not the second best in the league, we were 16h. Scoring offense is the only offense that mattered. We moved it up and down the field and couldn’t score. What do you think Moreno will do for us in the freakin’ red zone.

Second, there weren’t enough players to fix our defense in the whole draft. How do you cover for a weak defense? Ball control baby. Run the ball, controlled short range passes, consistency in the red zone.

We drafted extremely well to change our team which needed to be done. Get off line haters.

  • tower1970

SuperfanDB you should take your head out of your Patriots laden ass and understand stats. 3rd rank pass offense 12th ranked run offense meaning 9th overall offense in the league. You DON’T cover a weak defense YOU BUILD IT STRONGER and McD as people call him, more like MickyD, screwed us again. We are not his beloved Patriots we’re THE BRONCOS and I feel it high time Bowlen do something about this coach before it’s to late…Hell its already to late a 1st round pick next year for a freakin #37 2nd rounder this year. His brain is in the crackerjack box.
