The Real McCoy

The relationship between a quarterback and his quarterback coach is evidently a very important thing, just ask Jay Cutler. Cutler was very fond of his recently departed QB coach Jeremy Bates, and their relationship had to say something about his 4,526 passing yards.

To make all you Denver fans feel comfortable out there, newly hired offensive coordinator Mike McCoy understands the importance of this relationship. Jake Delhomme even helped McCoy make his decision to move to Denver easier. Delhomme talked to McCoy’s 9 year old daughter and calmed her down about the move across the country. The article states:

“According to Mike McCoy, Delhomme talked to little Olivia and put her at ease, sharing that it was hard for him to leave the New Orleans Saints in 2003, but that coming to the Panthers was one of the best decisions he’d ever made.”

If your starting QB will do that for you then that’s the type of coach every player wants to play for.

Mike McCoy has accomplished many feats throughout his 9 year tenure for the Panthers. In 2007 Carolina became the first NFL team to win one game with 4 different starting quarterbacks each. Those QB’s would be pre-injured Jake Delhomme, 45 year old Vinny Testaverde, bona fide backup Luke McCown, and undrafted rookie Matt Moore. Whether or not they single-handedly won their respective game McCoy apparently did a good enough job preparing them to win, and that’s what being a QB coach is all about.

I can’t wrap my head around why people say it’s a bad omen that Jake Delhomme is McCoy’s claim to fame. Remember that Delhomme was once a backup in NFL Europe.

  • 1997: In his first and only game played he completed 15/47 passes and threw 4 picks… in NFL Europe.
  • 1998: Threw for 1,410 yards, 12 TDs, and 5 picks during an 11 game period… in NFL Europe.
  • 1999-2003: Sat bench on the Saints, played 6 games, 2 in 1999, 4 in 2002, massed 3 TDs and 5 INTs.
  • 2003: Delhomme’s first year in Carolina he threw for 3,219 yards, 19 TDs, and 16 INTs.
  • 2004: Threw for 3,886 yards, 29 TDs, and 15 INTs en-route to a Super Bowl appearance.
  • 2005: Delhomme was almost as prolific the next year throwing 3,421 yards, 24 TDs, and 16 INTs.
  • 2006: Despite an injury in only 13 games played Delhomme threw 2,805 yards, 17 TDs, and 11 INTs.
  • 2007: Delhomme was injured again but managed 626 yards, 8 TDs, and 1 INT in 3 games.
  • 2008: Threw for 3,288 yards, 15 TDs, and 12 INTs. His production was cut due to the amazing run game of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. 

A fair amount of the production Delhomme showed had to have came from McCoy, seeing how he was already in Carolina when Delhomme arrived. Say what you want about Jake Delhomme, but he was purely a backup until he went under the helm of Mike McCoy, that’s a fact.

    I’m on the wait and see bandwagon with all the coaches but I like the crew McD put together so far……. If all else fails at least it should be entertaining!

    Either that or a coach you, uhm, really hate. A glass half-full/empty situation. Anyway i agree, and you make a good case, that McCoy has done some great work.

    McDaniels and McCoy… Mike McNolan?

    Alright, you’ve made a good point. I’m still not sure what he’s going to do, considering Ricky Bobby will be running the running game (I hope) and McD all but directing the passing game. Your point seems to indicate to me that he’s a good teacher. Could he also be a good motivator?

    McCoy Ricky Bobby? McRibby? Mmmm…

    I know it must be popular, but I’ve never heard of a worse idea for a sandwich. But it did provide a nickname for the entire Broncos offense.

    Don’t take this as blaspheming the Broncos name, but with a little more Scots-Irish influence, the Denver football team could adopt green and black team colors, have a shamrock on one side of the helmet and a thistle on the other, and a leprechaun and a blue-faced crazy, kilted person running up and down the stadium steps during games.

    Is that jumping the gun or going a little overboard? I’m not sure…

    PS. Sorry I didn’t include the Welsh in this. I love Welsh people and I’ve even got a bit in me, but I couldn’t come up with good Welsh symbolism or a good Welsh mascot. Christian Bale or Catherine Zeta Jones I suppose would work. Plus there are only two sides to a helmet.

    Thanks for doing the research on Delhomme’s stats under McCoy Mr. East. It was a very interesting read. It will be amzing to see what these two Micks can do with a talented guy like Jay.

    Jordan C you’re absolutely right, too many scots/irish. Only the protestants wear orange. What we need are a couple of polish guys with 37 letter names. Add in a czech and a few germans and ukranians, and a swede or two.

    As far as McCoy is concerned, I think we should wait and see what he can do. Coach McDaniels has made some REALLY good choices on the D side, especially Dline and Nolan at DC. Keeping Turner and Dennison on O was very sharp. The pattern suggestes that he made a good choice with OC and should be given the benefit of the doubt.

    I can’t wait till the offseason begins, I wish I could simulate thru the Superbowl and Probowls and get to the meaty part of the season … freeagency and the draft

    Hey guys, a question I though of when considering that Coach McD is going to his first “offseason” with the Broncos. I’m thinking whether Coach McD may decide to “gut” the team and then rebuild based on his type of football player …. if that is indeed what he decides to do especially on defensive I think this next year will be on of rebuilding and not reloading … Broncos Football in recent years has been about RELOADING for another run at the Superbowl … I wonder if us as fans will accept a rebuild process … I personally want to reload and not rebuild … We reloaded on offense in one year, defense hopefully follows suit.

    I guess, but it’s kind of like reloading a cannon with forks…the defense has 3 good players out of 20ish. There is no way we can tweak the defense and make a difference. The good news is this, of they r ebuild the defense over the next few years, the offense is already set. They only have to make a moderate improvement as far as defense is concerned, and we should be cheering in the playoffs next year. As Arizona has showed, once in the playoffs, anything can happen. Add a pass rush, the Broncos will do big things. These guys are all about winning, so I trust they will so whatever it takes to male this team competative next year.

    dee Reloading is what is needed for the Offense. A shiny new running back, a young guard to groom for depth, a tight end to replace Nate Jackson(hopefully), and a mid round wide reciever to replace D. Jackson.

    A complete rebuild is required on Defense. We will need at least 5 new starters; 2 NTs one to start and a backup to spell the starter,2 starting and 1 backup DEs(I’m hopeful that Carlton Powell is a player but who really knows?) at least one inside linebacker( and I’ve not heard any arguments to convince me DJ Williams can play either inside or outside in a 3-4), 2 maybe 3 safeties depending on what we get from J Barrett.

    Free agency and the draft will be interesting for us fans, and hopfully productive. Moving some of our current players to new positions is going to be painful in some circumstances, and pleasantly surprising in others. Pardon my skeptisism, but J Moss and Doom aren’t going to make it as 3-4 outside linebackers. Spot duty or situational subs at BEST. I fully expect Spenser Larson to be a pleasant surprise as an inside LB. He has the size, the instincts and toughness to be one. W. Woodyard is a player, but where? Too small for LB, but he did start out at safety at UK, maybe he can Lynch a few running backs from the SS position.

    I agree richard we need to completely rebuild the D I just hope we do it the right way and build with youth rather than high priced FA.We need to get players that fit the system and who can play as a team.

    I think you’re right about needing at least 5 new starters. The front three all have to be new. I thought for a while that we had some potential 3-4 DEs on the team, but now I don’t think so.

    From what I’ve read about 3-4 ILBs, they can be smaller, but have to be good tacklers and drop back into coverage. DJW should be really good at it and I would argue that Larson actually doesn’t have the range, but Woodyard does and is also a great tackler.

    I’m also hoping that either Doom or Moss will have the skills to be the ROLB. I wouldn’t count on both, but maybe one of them.

    I was also pondering this idea – if the Broncos do end up drafting Maualuga, they would move him to LOLB. This position may require the widest skill set of the LBs. He can rush the passer, he and stop the run with amazing tackling, and he’s athletic enough to cover tight ends, maybe. According to a Rocky Mountain News article, the LOLB is usually really big, too.

    Not sure, but this might make sense.

    Jordan C Maualuga is an inside guy. If the staff thinks we need a Lolb we could do better with someone like Clint Sintim or converting Larry English from DE. My problem with DJ in the middle is that in a 3-4 he would be required to take on a lot of blocks to stuff the run, and that would not be a good use of his considerable speed. Larson’s liability in the middle would be pass coverage and if that is what you are alluding to with “range” I agree with you. Alas, we are all trying to think about rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic, but there doesn’t seem to be a simple, obvious fix for our D problems.

    I guess you can tell I’m getting annoyed at that the fact that there aren’t any new topics being posted on the site so I’m creating my own…lol

    Ok so everyone agrees and the offense needs some fine tuning and the defense needs to be blown up..soooo who are the 5 guys on O and D than you would keep on the team .. (I know finding 5 guys on D is tough) ..but lets see if we can get to a consensus..I’ll start here are my guys on O and D:

    Offense (5 guys pretty easy … I’m hoping)

    1.Cutler
    2. Clady
    3. Royal
    4. BMarsh
    5.Scheffler

    Now the defense

    1. Champ Bailey
    2. Dj Williams
    3. Woodyard
    4. Barrett
    5. Dumervil (I’m not sure whether DOOM can thrive in the 3-4 but he is still our most effective pass rusher so he gets the nod at 5. )

    Ok guys let me know you’re thoughs … Have I snubbed anyone? or Is there someone that should be removed?

    Remember its the top 5 guys on O and D that you would not move off the team.

    *Notable Omission – Yes I realize I did not add in a runningback but under McD’s system and in NE they did not need a dominant running back just a servicable one. I believe the TE is more of a need to make the offense go under McD’s system.

    keep everyone on O, as far as running backs I would have torain, hillis, and bell, he played good the last game, probably our only bright spot in the whole game. Hopefully we pick a day 1 running back in the draft but that’s wishful thinking. As far as D i would keep thomas, ek, larsen, and thats about it along with your 5 dee.
