Peyton Hillis (AP Photo)

Pop quiz! Peyton Hillis is:

  1. A 7th round draft pick out of Arkansas.
  2. A running back pushed into the role of a fullback by being on the same team as first rounder Darren McFadden and first rounder Felix Jones.
  3. Officially listed at 6’2″ and 250 pounds.
  4. Being considered as a hybrid H-back, meaning he could line up as a tight end in the slot.
  5. Compared to Dallas Clark.
  6. The first Broncos’ rookie to have a hundred yard receiving game AND a hundred yard rushing game in the same season.
  7. A pure down-home country boy.
  8. Up for Rookie of the Week.
  9. Up for FedEx Ground Player of the Week.
  10. THE TRUCK.
  11. All of the above.

Fortunately, there really are no wrong answers to this quiz. Since he first saw serious action with the rock in November against Miami, Hillis has been tearing up the field. And though it required four injuries a position shift and a full solar eclipse (oh wait that’s a different show), Hillis is slowly emerging as a solid, bruising running back that can be favorably compared to the likes of Brandon Jacobs. Oh, and The Bus, who is a smidge under six feet and played at around 255.

It has taken Hillis a couple of games to really step into the role of a full time tailback, which isn’t at all shocking since he hasn’t had to do that since high school. One might say that he had a little rust to shake off. But even while rusty, and having to make things up on the fly, one thing really stood out about Hillis. He got the tough, tough yards.

Hillis has a way of hitting the pile and then the pile moves. He squeezes in, he pushes, he spins and he turns no gain into a small gain and a small gain into a large gain. On a critical fourth and one, on a play that the O-line got no push and he was stopped, he managed to twist and got that yard anyway. From that play alone, the hearts of many Broncos fans were sold. No matter how much you liked Michael Pittman, you knew he wasn’t able to do that, and none of the other speed backs the Broncos have or had could accomplish that one little thing: getting one yard when it was needed the most.

This season, Denver has gone very pass heavy. In fact, for the season they are currently at 60.4% pass to just 39.6% run. In part, it would seem that it’s because the run game simply has not been effective. The running backs the team has had have worn down quickly. They’re good, fast, agile and crafty, but none of them had the real stamina. In theory, Ryan Torain was going to come in and save the team from being unable to field a good 25 rush game, but his time lasted roughly 6 quarters before he went back out. With three major injuries in a row, there’s some question about whether Torain will ever be healthy enough to play.

But Hillis, now this guy has taken a beating. He isn’t just hard to tackle, he makes the defenders afraid to hit him. Really, does a 210 pound cornerback want to hit the 250 pound Hillis straight on? No way, Hillis will just lower his shoulder, pick the guy up and keep going, and the defensive back will have bruised ribs and bruised pride as a thanks.

And, as the hundred yard game against Miami can attest, he’s got hands. He can play any position in the backfield, motion into the slot, play in a two back set and you can’t tell if he’ll block or run. The only problem with his ability to do everything is that it’s a lot of work and while you want to get him as many touches as possible, you also don’t want to break him down out there. The kind of running Hillis does is hard on the body.

But that’s exactly what we need him to do. We need him to go out there and hit those defenders and make them hurt. The Denver one-cut downhill power running game has a chance. It keeps the defense off the field, it weakens the opposing defense, and it takes pressure off the passing game. The Broncos defense won’t wear down as badly in the fourth quarter, Cutler gets to make flashier plays, Marshall or Royal lose a double team, and the running game? It can just keep on truckin’.

After his 129 yard rushing game against the New York Jets, a team that has allowed only one other 100 yard rusher this season, Peyton Hillis made a statement: that he is going to hit the line and push through it. When I see him I can’t help but think of the truck commercials voiced by the gravelly Sam Elliot, giving you the image of strength and unstoppable power.

And that’s what Hillis is for the Broncos, and that’s exactly what they need. Mark my words, a game where Peyton Hillis carries the load for a hundred yards is a game where the Broncos win. The Pittsburgh Steelers had The Bus. The Denver Broncos have The Truck.

Peyton Hillis is Ram Man from He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
Seriously, paint that helmet blue, his shirt orange and remove the axe (unless its the raiders) and that is him.

i really hope that peyton could be our guy for the next 10 years, but im afraid shanny will pull his bull crap where he falls in love with some other rookie and blows off peyton. and sadly, I had this nightmare last night. but think about this guys, peyton as the truck (bus) and aldrigde change of pace/speed guy like willie parker was.

In all reality, i could see peyton having more success on the pro level at running back then run DMC and felix jones. DMC plays for the raiders and his whole career will be filled with unrealized potential, and his draft status that was inflated due to the success AP had as a rookie, but the are not he same player. Felix plays for the cowboys and he is their change of pace guy to marion barber, and barber is the main guy their and only a few years older, so its not like any time soon he will be the feature back.

Now to Hillis, i know that 4 or 5 great games only yeilds speculation, but he’s just got IT. IT is hard to explain, but its that down south old school, corn fed football player. peyton rushed for like 2500 yards his senior year in high school, so im sure he can make the grind of the season, not to mention he fits that 1 cut zone blocking scheme perfectly. so I think that of the 3 ARK. running backs, peyton is in the system that best fits him and reap the success because of it.

I hope the Broncos don’t run him into the ground. Good running teams use more than one running back. Get these other backs some quality carries! He does look good trucking over people though. All Ready!

  • flbronc

i think that we’ll always see hillis paired with another rb. i like his style and think that shanny does too. i think that when our normal rb’s are healthy we’ll see him used all over the place: at fb, motioned out to wr, and occasionally at rb.

basically, i think we will always see him on the field the majority of the offensive snaps- but not always at rb. wont that make our misdirection plays great- having two legitimate running threats (and recieving threats) running in opposite directions…. now we just need to keep someone healthy.

  • adam

The thought of him being able to function much like Dallas Clark is very exciting to me, especially since our best possession guy (Stokley) isn’t getting any younger. And another exciting thing, Chad Jackson found his way into the offense!

  • HogBlog

I’d love to see “The Truck” playing H-Back! Look at what Dallas Clark had done for P Manning’s career? As an oppposing Dfence, you’d have no way to game plan for him. Imagine Cutler with yet ONE more option to throw to? Then put in this new FB, Pinnock @ 260 to provide more MEAT on the grill! Damn, if we grab a Feature RB to alternate with Hillis, you would have that “Thunder and lightening” tandem to run behind this dynamic O line of ours!

  • Matt

I like the way he plays. The more he is on the field the better it is for us. I like the idea of pairing him up with another rb. He runs with force so after he gets some carries and pounds on the D have another guy with the home run speed capability to put a change of pace. Bettis/Parker is a good comparison. I would like Hillis to get the majority of carries. He moves piles and keeps the offense in reasonable 3rd downs. Im not opposed to seeing him in the slot or split back.

  • robtink242

i’m excited to see how him and selvin act as a combo. selvin will be better suited with hillis as his compliment. Yeah selvin’s had his share of injuries but i think things will turn around for me with hillis takin on more carries.

that running back competition next offseason will be tough.

I meant to mention in the article and I totally forgot last night, but he came in second in Football Outsider’s DYAR for the week. Meaning that his 129 rushing yards were very high quality rushing yards.

check out where I ranked the Denver Broncos in this weeks Kickin’ it With Kevin!

  • kerry

Selvin Young and Andre Hall wont even be on the roster next year. too injury prone and too fumble prone. Shanahan has got to stop trying to turn bums into stars. it doesnt work. a new RB is needed in the draft. id say Ian Johnson from Boise State but he isnt built to be a 20-25 carry back in the NFL. Hillis maybe that guy. CJ Spiller from Clemson could be a good draft pick somewhere between rounds 3-5. if we werent so hard up for defense then a Beanie Wells or Knowshon Moreno would be a great first round RB pick. but there is also a pick that nobody is looking at right now and that is Rashad Jennings out of Liberty. 6’1, 232 pounds and projected to run a 4.6 forty. or Shonn Greene out of Iowa. 5’11, 235 pounds. projected 4.5 forty and through eight games this year he has had 100 yards or more in every game. he had 217 yards against Wisconsin.

I agree with Kerry – we need a full time back. Whether it’s Hillis or someone else, we are at our best when we have an established running game that allows us to use the bootleg and the screen. But I would vote that we aggressively pursue an aggressive pass rusher. I HAAAATE that we can’t put pressure on the QB. If you want to see what I’m talking about, watch the following teams: Giants, Steelers, Ravens, Cowboys. All are in the top 10 in sacks, with the Steelers leading the NFL with 42 sacks. The Broncos are ranked 21st with only 22 sacks in 12 games. And because we aren’t putting pressure on the QB, we are allowing them all kinds of time to throw the ball, which is why we are 30th in the league in interceptions (5). The only team with fewer INTs is Detroit (Baltimore leads the league with 20).

I am pleading with Shanahan to beef up our defense. If we don’t pressure the QB, we are always going to have to score 35 points a game to win. In other words, we’ll become the Chargers.

I actually wonder if he’s able to be our “answer”.
Now dont get me wrong, I LOVE what he’s brought to the table so far. Love that we can use him all over the field and that he’s versitile enough to be able to catch the ball and be a solid recieving threat. However, i really wonder once other teams get some game film on him how effective he will be as an every down back, not only for this season but moving forward, especially when you add to the fact that we really dont have that change of pace back to compliment him. I agree, i cant see Selvin sticking around next year, but keep in mind everyone, that we’ve not only got torrain coming back, but quick 6 as well. So, to me, the question becomes do we think 1.) they can be durable enough 2.) are they talented enough.. if you can answer yes to those then do we need to draft yet another RB? If you can answer yes to those then you can pair one or both of them with hillis for a solid 1,2 (and maybe 3) punch.

I dont know.. Im torn. As nice as it would be to have a top tier type of RB, is it necessary when we have so many holes on the D side of the ball? On top of that, Stokely isnt getting any younger so we may need to find a slot guy, AND as big as D.Grahahm’s cap number is (possible cap cut in the future??), and as unhealthy as Tony is, we may need to look towards a TE in the future.
Hopefully Hillis can be “the guy” just hate having to draft no matter how low, runningbacks seemingly every year .. guess time will tell about hillis

  • http://merlinofchaos.livejournal.com E. Halsey Miles

In theory, Tatum Bell and Selvin Young are both excellent as a change of pace back if Hillis is the primary ball carrier.

I’m not convinced just seeing game film on Hillis will help the other team slow him down. I do think that he might suffer as an every down back because he doesn’t have elite speed, so he will be one dimensional. Thus a change of pace back will be really important. But I remember reading that Jerome Bettis put up a most exceptional stat: 5 carries for a total of 1 yard, for a terrible-sounding .2 yards per carry. Except those 5 carries generated 18 points.

I see Hillis being capable of that, and having good hands and able to catch the ball out of the backfield, as a whole lot more. Maybe I’m optimistic here, but 129 yards against the Jets? Sure, this is the NFL and we have to wait and see if he can do it consistently, but I think he can be a big help, this season, because on offense the only thing we’ve truly missed is a power back.

What we have next season is anybody’s guess. With all the injuries, who do you trust? I worry that Hillis is so valuable we’ll overuse him and break him down, and I’m concerned about Torain’s inability to stay on the field.

  • robtink242

yeah hall, young, pittman, torain, bell, and quick 6 should be on the bubble. I would go for a solid back in the first 3 rounds. along with hillis and two backs that are currently on my list to be on the bubble. Granted we dont find a stud through free agency.

  • kerry

we have to have a feature, 25-30 carry back. all these fragle backs have to be released. changing the RB over and over again during the game messes up rhythm of an offense. Hall, Young, Pittman, Bell should all be cut this offseason. im not gonna be sold on Torain at all until he shows he can stay healthy. he gets injured, then gets healthy and first game back he gets injured again. man Tim Hightower would be good for us right now. but we need a bruiser. a monster who can run after first contact.

  • T-Money

So then call TD and get him to come out of retirement.

  • kerry

thats the best answer you can come up with? call TD out of retirement. real original. and i get flak for not saying anything smart.
