Ryan Torain

An MRI confirmed that Ryan Torain has a “clean” tear of his anterior cruciate ligament, which will end his season, Bill Williamson reports. He should be ready to go by training camp for next hear, but he will not see another snap in 2008.

We had high hopes for him, especially with everyone else going out, but no such luck.

  • Rob Bronco

The rabbit’s foot is lucky to everyone except the rabbit. We are going to need to rely on some new looks on offense if we have any hope of finishing the season above .500 and winning the division. Time for the Denver D to buckle down and get at the quarterback. I also hear that Champ Bailey has stated that he wants to be back for the ATL game? That would be quite a feat considering the severity of his injury.

    But but but… NO!

    /inner child’s reaction

  • Person

I wonder what this means for his future…

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Honestly, like I’ve been saying all year, it means the Broncos will be spending a higher draft pick on a running back. Possibly first rounder.

  • OC Bronco

Why pay big money to an unproven back when we have proven year in and year out we don’t need that.
Our line needs to improve their run blocking and we just need an RB that has good vision. Not that I would mind a top rated college runner but doesn’t EVERYONE agree we need to invest in our Defense?

  • JP

There is no doubt that Rd 1 needs dpent on the defensive side of the ball…If not…I quit.

  • T-Money

    perfect

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

One first rounder isn’t going to fix this defense. It could fix the offense though…

I feel like we can do more in free agency to fix the defense than we can to fix the offense. I was anti-RB this past draft… I’m very much for it this year.

Round one or two. Do it.

  • robtink242

hey kyle we’re getting a back but not first or second round. first round LB second Saftey. hey our d-line might not be giants good but they are way better than last years line. and Jarvis Moss isnt looking like a bust anymore.

How bout we trade tim crowder for a draft pic.

  • LorDog

I agree with robtink242. We take MLB #1, S #2 and save one of the later rounds for a diamond in the rough type of RB that Shanny is so good at finding.

  • LorDog

Don’t forget we still have Carlton Powell on the PUP, too. If he’s half as good as our other Virginia Tech draft pick ;), he’ll be very good for us next year.
He will play for us next year, right?

  • Bobby

I think Torain gets another shot next year…I personally would love to see Willie Moore out of Mizzou in the 1st round

  • Jordan C

Before Torrain went down, it didn’t look like any elite MLBs would be available at the Broncos potential draft position. However, finishing at around .500 might make it possible.

I think you might be right about the d-line. The young line just needs time to develop. Although, I’m still a proponent of drafting a massive NT (Terrance Cody or Raji) and switching to the 3-4.

Here’s hoping that Michael Huff or Gibril Wilson get released at the end of the year, so that Safety is less of a priority and we can draft a durable back in Round 2.

  • Jordan C

Oh, and even though the defensive coordinator revolving door does need to stop turning, the Broncos would have to bring in a real DC to run the 3-4.

  • http://broncotalk Jeff

Another bronco running back going down with an injury…its as natural as jamie winborn celebrating a tackle after the other team gains 15 yards for another first down

  • Jason M

As far as RBs go Denver has Peyton Hillis, who yes is a FB, but has shown he can run the ball and get the job done. He is not the game breaker that Portis, Selvin Young, etc are, but we just need to get consistency. Our offensive line is one of, if not the BEST young lines in the game. The run blocking will come, but the zone scheme is designed to take the burden off the line and put it on the RB to choose the right hole to run through. I do not think we need to spend a first round, or second round pick on a RB. Free agency will be adequit, Torrain will be back next year and Selvin Young is servicable.

As far as the draft, I am not convinced we need a MLB as I am rather impressed with Nate Webster, if Laurinitas is available then go for it. We need D line help in a major way. Yes Jarvis Moss is a bust, Crowder is a bust, in fact IMO the only Dlinemen worth anything are Doom, and Thomas, and Robertson is ok. We just need to get bigger and more physical up the middle. Look at the successful teams, they have DTs that collaspe the pocket and cause problems in the back field. That is what Denver needs. I say we go interior DL and safety in the first 3 rounds due to the fact this draft is very deep in safeties. My question is who are we going to sign to run the ball for us for the rest of this season as it seems people are forgetting we are on top of our division.

  • dee

I’m hoping that Selvin is ready for Atlanta … we are a passing team now … we just need a decent RB to keep the defence honest. I say we spend the rest of the year trying to outscore teams like the Colts did … start with the FALCONS … I’m confident out D can hold to FG’s and we cannot settle for anything less than TD inside the 20

  • dee

Kyle any good free agents on the market this summer?

  • dee

Here is the potential free agent class of 2009 as per Adam Schefter of NFL.com

. Julius Peppers, Panthers defensive end –- Coming off a down year, but teams pay premium for pass rushers.

    2. Steven Jackson, Rams running back –- Hard to imagine St. Louis parting ways with its most popular player.

    3. Tommie Harris, Bears defensive tackle -– Talks on a long-term contract hit a standstill last month.

    4. Marion Barber, Cowboys running back –- Last season, one NFC coach said Barber is an elite back in the same class as LaDainian Tomlinson or Adrian Peterson. Now he wants to be paid that way.

    5. Chris Snee, Giants guard –- At a time when interior offensive linemen are cashing in, the son-in-law of Giants coach Tom Coughlin is going to cash in.

    6. Nnamdi Asomugha, Raiders cornerback –- Oakland plans to franchise him again if he remains unsigned, which is a distinct possibility.

    7. Albert Haynesworth, Titans defensive tackle –- Tennessee wouldn’t let Haynesworth leave this offseason, and its stance is unlikely to change.

    8. Terrell Owens, Cowboys wide receiver -– At the age of 34, T.O. is performing like he were 24.

    9. Will Smith, Saints defensive end -– New Orleans defensive end Charles Grant got his money and Smith intends to do the same.

    10. T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Bengals wide receiver –- Still waiting for his first big-money deal.

Of course, the list hardly stops there. It goes on and on, like the money that could be spent on some of these players.

The free-agent class of 2009 also is scheduled to include Lions wide receiver Roy Williams, Bills wide receiver Lee Evans, Giants running back Brandon Jacobs, Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman, Cowboys safety Ken Hamlin, Falcons linebacker Keith Brooking, Texans cornerback Dunta Robinson, Cardinals linebacker Karlos Dansby, Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia and Giants wide receiver Amani Toomer.

  • MikeY55

okay first off take steven jackson terrel owens marion barber tommie harris chriss snee will smith roy williams lee evans terrence newwan ken halmin chris snee off the list all have been taken care of contract wise….
BUT julius may be giving a chance to walk… don’t see Arizona letting go of dansby (one of the best linebackers in the league) nnamdis will be franchised again.. i think that our best pick up in the free agency might be…. Mike Peterson has not gotten an offer from the jags and is in trouble with them right now so they might not wanna bring him back.. yes he gets hurts yes he is old but if we get a young linebacker in to watch n learn behind him for a year or 2 it owuld be great (aka Al wilson impact on Dj

  • dee

I guess we should just hope for SALARY CAP CUTs then .. in March

  • dbroncos

He showed a great deal while he was in. And that was a rookie player coming in for his first game after an injury against players who are warmed up and ready to go. I think we will be set at RB next year.

  • T-Money

I know that you guys disagree but i think we should bring in tatum bell for at least a work out. He’s healthy 1. he knows our system 2. and he’s fast3. And we are desperate 4. Isn’t that enough to at least work him out.
There is too little time to try to bring in someone that doesn’t know the play book. I would rather it be someone else but….

    Thoughts?

  • jcampb72

Moreno would be a good pick…”beanie” wells will be gone by the time we get a draft pick

  • http://merlinofchaos.livejournal.com E. Halsey Miles

Honestly we have to bring someone in. For depth if no other reason. I imagine they’ll be taking a look at every RB on the market and seeing what they can get. I have to imagine there will be a signing on Monday.

  • jerseybrocofan

I agree with bringing in bell, but what about tony hunt the former penn state rb? We need bodies who know the offense and hunt was with the eagles and got cut because he couldn’t transition to fb.

  • robtink242

yeh mereno will be a good pick up but he doesnt compliment torain style of runnin young and torain should be much affective when healthy. get a back in the later rounds or bring Mike Bell back i’ll take his one fumble to Andre Hall 2.

  • OC Bronco

MikeY55 – Yes Peterson is good but we have signed plenty of bad attitude free agents in the past and none have panned out. And you certainly don’t want your leaders being malcontents.
I like Peppers but he is on his way down and will probably be signed for more than he is worth. Free agency just isn’t the way to go for anything other than role players like Stokely.
What we need is a Safety. Safeties drafted early are as safe a bet as you can make and that is to me the weakest spot on the field for our Defense.

  • LorDog

The Steelers just released Najeh Davenport….he could be a solid RB for us to fill the hole this season.

  • bob

i’m not to sure we sign him as yet. what if pj pope has explosive game? pope knows our system, and along with hillis can stall ample time for selvin young to get healthy. Najeh doesnt play with heart to me. or maybe he doesnt like the steel city

  • http://birty.blogspot.com mikebirty

i’m all for driving a truck of money up to albert haynesworth’s door. What’s the penalty for tapping up a player under contract? Loose a first round pick? Is he worth it given the sketchy first round draft history with defensive players?

  • MikeY55

OC bronco i agree and disagree about bringing in free agents because really in all reality we’ve never brought in a BIG name free agent and only cast off who turn into role players like stokley… i mean we brought in daniel graham who was known for his blocking skills not his receiving and thats pretty much whats he brought… travis henry was a dick but when he was healthy he was leading the league in rushing.. i don’t think peppers is on his way down his Defensive line is absolutly terrible besides him so all they have to do is double him and it limits his effectiveness in rushing the QB just like our very own Dumervil he has been almost there everytime give him a 1 on 1 and he will make more sacks maybe bringing in a guy like peppers could add to his sack total as well chain effect. but my biggest wish is just forking over hard cold cash to haynesworth he is a beast

  • Awesome, Austin

We will never get haynesworth, he would be most likely to go to the cowboys if the Titans didn’t resign him. They pay the most for free agents.

  • merc22

denver should get shawn greene @ lowa st in the 2nd round, hes a big guy

  • MikeY55

if we got haynesworth it would completly change the outlook of our defense people say 1 player can’t make a difference… This one can i say denver chases him in the offseason and if we don’t get him we will look at suggs or peppers. i don’t think the ravens will keep suggs they find too many good defensive players to pay them well

  • BroncoInAz

I agree with a couple of you. We do not need to waste a draft pick in the early rounds. Remmber that we will have Young And Torain back next year at 100%. Torain is the better back of the two..trust me as I watched him at every home game for ASU. Remember that this was his first game and first action in the NFL. He didnt get a pre season or anything. He came right off the IR list and jumped into the starting role against seasoned Vets and pulled off 68 yards on 12 carries and a TD before getting hurt. When he was in our Offense had a rythm and was firing on all cylinders. As soon as he went down, we were a 1 dimensional team. With Young and Torain back next year we should not waste a draft pick when we need to use them on our D. We need a star LB or a DL, or a Safety. In fact in that order. In the meantime we can use out Pope and Hillis, especially since our Rookies have been the highlight of our team this year. Maybe bring in Tatum Bell or Mike Bell for depth since they both know the system and can jump right in.

  • Socal Den Fan

The first two picks need to be on defense.MLB,S. Maybe later we can look at RB but our weakest spot is on defense.I like the way our DL is looking I think the more they together the better they will get. Nate is worthless and with a good safety we can let those LB loose on the QB. We also need to stick with a formation if we go to a 3-4 then lets not do a half ass job commit all the way or stay with a 4-3.

MikeY55 – as far as Haynesworth is concerned – I could not agree more! He would be 1 player I would spend big bucks for.
