It doesn’t get much uglier than this. The Denver Broncos (4-3) played their sloppiest game of the season at Foxboro to get leveled by the New England Patriots (4-2) on Monday Night Football. They’ll head into the bye week loaded with questions regarding the remainder of their 2008 season.

After a 3-0 start, the Broncos have lost 3 of 4. They’re a mess, committing over a dozen turnovers in those four games, including five tonight.

The defense tallied six sacks but still allowed 41 points. That has to be some type of record.

Injuries to Jay Cutler, Champ Bailey and Boss Bailey will be monitored closely as the Broncos head into their bye week. They’ll need these guys back if they hope to turn this season back around.

I’m pretty much at a loss of words… what a horrible game. Dish it out in the comments. I know we’re all really pissed off right now, but let’s try and keep it clean…

  • Michael

    I’m sick….. so very sick.

  • Scott

First and foremost a loss is a loss. But a blowout is almost certain to derail a season so young. I have no clue who is controlling the Defense. First were a 4-3 or hybrid. Now were a 3-4. I don’t get it. Shanahan has to be dictating to Slowik (get the best guys on the field period.) Problem is, you cannot run a proper scheme in either without proper personnel. I found it interesting that Jaws said you have to have a vision with a Defense and draft the proper personnel to make the “scheme” or vision successful. Right now, we are a Defense filling the gaps with inferior lineman and safeties. Our obvious strength is linebacker, but that position needs a true Mike and our last one was Al Wilson. You know, to tell you the truth, I always was a Coyer fan. Granted he had fits with Manning, but that Defense came to play every game. Since then, we abandon a good coach in Jim Bates due to impatience and end up with Mikes good friend Bob Slowik who is more a technician taking orders from Mike. Maybe I’m wrong, but Shanahan has still got his power over all coordinator positions. I just pray that over the bye week we don’t blow things up and start over again. Which will probably happen.

My second is this. Offensively, we need Torain to be a spark plug and ignite some fire in the RB position. We need a jolt of energy right out of the blocks. We turn the ball over with 3/4 of a football game to go, and it’s like “Oh my god the games decision has already been determined.” Not all games will be perfect coming out on your first possession, by oh my how we crawl under a rock at the first sign of adversity. Suck it up and play ball. Cutler throw 5 pics, I don’t care. But move the team and get some good mojo flowin like the old Vandy days.

As fans, accept who we are now and hope for better fortunes in the future. Last I heard, we still have more than half a season to play. Let the Shanahan boo birds sing there tune for two weeks. Let the fans start giving reason to watch the Nuggets. But me, I will live and die a Bronco Fan. Every minute, every quarter, every draft and every off-season. We got alot of talent on this team and better days are ahead. Maybe even a few suprises in 2008. Maybe not. But don’t turn you back on the boys. They need us now more than ever. And to tell you the truth, I need them.

  • OC Bronco

I don’t care if we get blown out or not a loss is a loss and I had no delusions of grandeur going in to Foxboro. Our safeties are worse than horrible and our O is making too many mistakes but we can fix that. I didn’t expect for us to win more than 9 games this year so I am not surprised 1 bit. This is not a good team at this point.

  • BroncoFan18

Look, it’s not rocket science why we lost these games. There is one constant in each of them. TURNOVERS. We talked about after the Jags game, we talked all week about it, we said the one thing the Broncs needed to do to win against the Pats was to NOT TURNOVER THE BALL. What do we do? 3 fumbles 2 picks

Turnovers not only kill any progress you made up to that point, but also swing momentum to the other team. Any coach will tell you that the turnover differential is the key stat in any game.

I tell myself we should be panicking, but the fact is, we need to keek our heads up. This is a fixable problem. It’s not scheme that’s killing us, just holding on to the football.

We’ve been hit with the injury bug and have had a couple sloppy games. So what? Last I checked we were at the top of our division with a 1 game lead over the Chargers. I’ll take that. Granted it’s been sloppy, but there it is none the less. You may call me an optimist or “blinded” by the blue and orange, but I really feel we can get out of this. We have the talent. We just need to regroup and use the bye week to heal and work on one thing only: HOLDING ON TO THE BALL.

It’s sad to say, but our destiny is still in our own hands. Just keep your heads up Bronco fans! There is a hell of a lot of football left to be played. We have the talent, trust me.

  • ryan

Maybe I am a little more upbeat. There is NO WAY we can keep turning the ball over at this rate. Plus we were running the ball pretty well to begin with, and the O-line looked awesome in both running and pass blocking. If Torian is even a fraction of the player we think he might be, that could be a major boost for us.

I am worried though that we have shown no ability to adapt in game. We never come out the second half and look like we have figured some things our and are ready to play.

  • BroncoFan18

I would like to add something I heard Shanny say in the postgame press conference that really says it all in my opinion.

    “WE ARE BEATING OURSELVES.”

It’s that simple. Just keep the ball and be patient and stop shooting yourself in the foot.

  • T-Money

We need to re-charge our batteries. Get everybody to NOT think about football for a few days, then come back and take a serious look at things. Our offense needs to get healthy… our Defense needs to get things together, and we need to figure out how not to turn the ball over.

    5 turnovers… you’ll never win with that

(I personally think there were alot of bad calls against the broncos… But that’s just me)

  • pjackson303

I can’t beleive this we finally get a break SanDiago is practically giveing us this division and this is how we respond you know this is why the Broncos dont get any respect around the league now at first it pissed me off but now i can’t blame them why should they look at the pride we showed we let a inferrior yeam with a inferrior quarterback basically give us the buisness and to make things worse they were not at full strength how imbarrising we relly have issues this is unacceptible we really need to play with some pride or at least make it competative at the very least.

  • http://merlinofchaos.livejournal.com E. Halsey Miles

I have no words. I used them all in the liveblog.

  • redhawkssh44

We need to go back to basics. The defence did not tackle very well and the pass defence was horrible. The only bright spot on defence was Champ Bailey’s ability to cover Randy Moss. We need to figure out how to stop the run so the pass defence can get better.
On offence we have to stop turning over the ball. The running game started out good until the first fumble and then it seems that they lost confidence. Jay looked good dispite his injury and we were able to move the ball on occasion but we were not consistent.
The bye week should do the team and the fans a lot of good. The defence should concentrate tackling and stopping the run. The offence needs to concentrate on eliminating turnovers. The fans need to support the team.

  • jchase8410

T-money I assume you may be referring to the “offensive pass interference” that didn’t exist

  • Justin

The season is far from over. The Bye week is perfect for us. Both sides of the ball needs to get healthy and both sides of the ball need to improve in there Game Play.

The Offence needs to stay with the run game and take less shots down field unless the Defence we are against is giving it to us and other than the Chargers and the Raiders none of them really have. This league has turns into short plays that become big. Last i knew Two 5 yard passes are a first down and same for two 5 yard runs. They get you down the field and they also control the clock. we have the best YAC players on offence in my opinion so why not stay short and let them go big. Less trying to force the ball down field. And like it was said a hundred times we need to hold onto the ball. The whole offence should be doing what B-Marsh did in Prep for this week over the bye.

As for the Defence. Safeties need to do a thousand tackle drills. We need to stay 4-3 and work on containment and pressuring the QB. We also need to be Playing MAN NOT ZONE on D. We have to much speed and talent not to be playing MAN.

Over all if during the bye we don’t make some changes we can put this one in the books as a hopeful start and nice learning experience for the rookies but a disappointment in the end.

  • BroncoFan18

It was a terrible call for sure and was one of many things (aka turnovers) that completely killed any momentum we got. The conspiracy theorist in me says they are getting back at us for the Hochuli game. But really folks it’s our turnovers that have caused the losses so far. Gotta stop killing ourselves before we can worry about the refs killing us.

  • BroncoFan18

We just need to get back to the basics plain and simple. Justin’s right, the bye couldn’t have come at a better time.

  • Dakota Fan

Wow. This really puts the family loyalty to the test, doesn’t it, brothers and sisters??? Right now, I’m two hours removed from being mad as hell at my team and it won’t end when I wake up in the morning. But more importantly when Mark Kiszla and Jeff Legwold throws their tantrums in tomorrow morning’s editions, I’ll be fired up and ready to take him on.

Onto the game- our d-line is coming around. They’re giving me more confidence as I go. Our o-line is still one of the best, because Jay has been well taken care of.

Now the bad stuff. I still think Cutler is a great QB, but what has happened to his confidence? He’s so off the mark right now on a lot of his passes. Our defensive secondary makes an average runner look like a pro bowler. I could go on, but I’d be insulting your intelligence.

Finally, anyone (ANYONE) who calls for Shanahan’s head on a platter can shove it. I would follow that guy to the gates of hell and back. He doesn’t fumble the ball. He doesn’t throw the interceptions. He doesn’t blow coverages. I know the day will come when he retires, but until then, he’s our guy. We’ll be there to grease the Dolphins in November.

    STAY STRONG, FAMILY!!! Go Broncos!!!

  • Roy

Maybe they should bust out the sleds and tackle dummies. Teach our defence how to hit, wrap then drive with their legs. Most of the reason that I saw our guys on D missing tackles is not just poor angles of pusuit(although there is a lot of that) but poor mechanics in general. You can’t ecpect a guy to fall just because you hit him. You need to TACKLE him.

  • BroncoFan18

Shanny is NOT the prob for sure. Anyone who calls for his head doesn’t know the first thing about the game of football. It’s so much more complicated then that. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen him win games for us with BRILLIANT play-calling.

Bottom line? I feel like crap. I wanna kick my dog. (Nah just kidding.) But that said I KNOW we got the talent. We just aren’t clicking right now. If anyone can pull this team together, Shanny can. Did you see how composed he was after the game? How calm? That’s because he knows we are headed in the right direction.

Just suck this one up Bronco fans. Move on. This is the freakin NFL. Every week is a new week. We are atop the division. We just need a couple adjustments, that’s all.

  • Steve

I hate hearing negative things about the broncos. You guys who say that stuff arent true fans. I think the broncos have a great team this year and a solid foundation so we can be good for a long time. Sure there are personnel holes, but well fill them thru drafts trades and stuff. Not to mention i think we can still win the division this year and play a home playoff game, which would be awesome.

Having said that, TERRIBLE game. Cutler didn’t look bad except for the second pick, and i know he’s an awesome qb who will bounce back and take us to the playoffs. I just hope the injury’s not serious..and the rest of the passing game was good marshall and royal played well. The biggest problem again was defense, but not so much against the pass before both bailey’s got hurt. We got TORCHED by the run again, that is our single biggest problem. The turnovers we can fix, especially when torain is healthy, i went to training camp and he’s a good one. But our RUN DEFENSE is horrible, we gotta plug those holes and tackle well, or were gonna get smoked by Ronnie Brown in two weeks.

  • jcampb72

Adjustments like a bad ass mlb or DT’s to stop the run would be a great start. Hopefully we pick it up or the top ten draft pick here we come. After next year if shanny doesn’t pick it up bowlen should give him the boot, but we all know shanny’s a denver bronco coach for life. Something has got to change. We need to start thinking power instead of speed. Looks like we are getting knocked off the ball pretty bad. And cutler needs to get his head out of his you know what. I thought shanny preached ball security this week. Guess hall and cutty didn’t get the serman.

  • flbronc

its hard to suck up after a couple great games at the begining of the year. cutler needs some coaching, some good old fashioned coaching. he’s not making great decisions when things dont go our way. i think the offense is buying into thier own hype and assuming domination over the defense- which isnt happening any more.

The bye couldnt come at a better time for us. We need some serious regrouping.

  • Mark in Carolina

The Patriots were cheating the whole entire game. The RB’s kept changing direction – how are our LB’s supposed to tackle a RB who zigs and zags? I mean, come on. Our LB’s are great as long as the RB runs straight ahead.

I’d also like to give some props to Lowry. He did a fantastic job of holding on to the RB after he got run over. Of course, if the RB decided to cheat and change direction, Lowry was out of the play, but in the instances where the RB took him head on and tried to run him over, lowry got him down…eventually.

I’d love to be complaining about the calls too…definitely seemed lopsided. The ref’s definately seemed to go out of their way to call PI, or “line up over the center” (whatever that means), but were happy to pick up flags (block in the back) or no PI (Moss TD) vs NE. But, bottom line is we did nothing in this game to even remotely suggest that the outcome would have been any different. This loss was earned.

  • Bronco Fan in AL

Pretty upsetting loss. I have to say, though, that our defense was really exposed last night. Even more so than earlier in the year. There are only 2-3 good players on D. The worst part of our team is the safeties. They can’t cover, can’t tackle, can’t play run support. When a RB breaks into the secondary, they’re too slow to catch them. We went from Steve Atwater and Dennis Smith to this catastrophe. Is it too late to bring John Lynch and Hamza Abdullah back?

I can’t get over the offense either. They were lights out for 3 games, now they’re lights off for the past 4. I think it gets back to the defense. At the beginning of the season, no one suspected the D would be this bad. So the offense had the attitude where they said “we can score a TD on every drive.” When the D was exposed the offense now says “we have to score a TD on every drive.” That’s why you see Cutler get impatient and throw downfield into double coverage. It’s why you see B-Marsh fight for extra yds only to fumble the ball. They’re all trying to make plays to keep the team in the game. Can’t blame them too much for that.

Maybe they can change their offensive strategy – death by a thousand cuts. Keep the offense on the field for long, sustained drives with short passes or running plays. Or am I being too optimistic?

  • Raz

What is going on with the team? For God’s sake, the Raiders are only 2 games behind Denver – at least they have Al Davis to blame.

How serious is Cutler’s injury? Looked like the 1st quarter hand injury was acting up again in the 2nd quarter.

  • Adam Santos

Andre Hall needs to go. Seriously, that guy fumbles WAY too much! It’s ridiculous.

  • BroncoFan18

Hey does anyone know the status of the Bailey brothers and Cutler? Will they be ready to go in 2 weeks?

  • robtink242

hey we need to get our head in the game. Jack Will needs to step his game up cause Bly ain’t no-one. i was happy to see moss out there tryin to apply some pressure, our line backers our the strenght of this D but the presence of a true mike is needed we also need a “ball hawk” safties and one that can TACKLE. we need Young and Torain. There were times when pittman could of take it to the house but lack of speed ail us. AND GET BARRET ON THE FEILD WE CANT GET ANY WORSE AT THAT SAFTEY POSITION.

  • Molly

Monday night national television. I’m just embarassed. Very, very embarassed.

  • AKscott

Spencer Larsen in the middle?? I know he’s been plugged in as a FB as of late but it seems he just has a nose for the ball and can certainly lay the lumber.. tired of watching our LB’s overpursue and then get pushed out of the play.. You got 2 weeks to get him ready- i’d like to give it a shot.. cant get much worse from here right?

  • Jason

I watched the 2006 draft – front to back – and when Denver moved up to pick Cutler I jumped (out of bed) and yelled as I did when we won our 1st SB (with a tad more control, I suppose). Even then I would have rather had Cutler, even now.

However, he has become or has not grown out of, being very short sighted. He’ll throw into double coverage to get the ball to BM and not hit the wide open guy that is (only!) 15 yards down field right in front of him. While his friendships with Brandon and Tony are very important I think he (Jay) is as much the problem by not giving the other receivers many looks. He needs to get through his progressions and get the ball to the open guy. If he can’t do that we can’t be a pass 1st offense no matter the talent.

*All remarks about the D are seconded here.

*Please, bring in Josh of the PS

    *Move B. Baily to SS

*Stay with the 3-4 and put Thomas as DE, Moss as OLB. Nik and Nate as MLB. not the NE’s 34 but more like SD’s attacking 34.

Glad am I that I could not watch the game, or even the little bar on the NFL.com game center!

  • AKscott

here’s something i noticed, yes we got 5 sacks on cassel, however, is it just me or did it seem like our defenders had a tough time tackling him? Cassel’s a big guy, but it shouldnt take 2 lineman, or a lineman and a LB together to get him down damn near every time. He isnt that tub of lard Jamarcus.. he’s a back up quarterback and we cant get a solid shot on him?!?!? I think it just speaks to our lack of tackling skills across the board- not only from our garbage safties

  • Aerobronco

I went to this game. I was all dressed up in my broncos apparel from head to toe. I was so pumped to see our broncos thrive here in New England once again. Man was i disappointed. Not only did i have beer hurled at my head but had screaming Patriot fans yell at me how badly the broncos suck. It was hard to endure but I’m a very proud Bronco fan so i stood tall and took the beating. It hurt more seeing the Broncos get manhandled than anything else. They didn’t look like coach Shanahans team at all. Very undisciplined turning the ball over 5 times and committing devastating penalties that kept the ball in the hands of the Patriots. Let’s hope they get there act together over their week off…. Go Broncos!

  • BroncosFan24

I believe that the broncos will come off their bye week stronger than ever. I am a HUGE bronco fan and i was so pumped last night to see the broncos defeat the patriots. However when our THIRD string running back came in and gave up to fumbles on TWO carries, i think the broncos stopped believing they could win. Adn by half time when everyone on our defence like Champ and BNoss Bailey were injured we just fell apart. Hopefully Selvin young will get better soon. GOOD LUCK BRONCOS…. p.s. CHARGERS SUCK!!!!!

  • UTBroncosFan

First off let me say I have been a fan for many many years I’ve seen the broncos win the superbowl 2 times in a row and I’ve seen them in person too. well anyway….

A loss is a loss with that patriots game though embarrassing that we did not score more points during the game. I think they were doing better by passing the ball rather then running it. at least the Broncos are coming back home which is what they need right now is a whole stadium surrounded by their fans and that brings in lots of support, so moving on the vs. dolphins game should be a easy win for our broncos considinring they will be back home with their fans cheering the broncos on. LETS GO BRONCOS!
