2008’s First Depth Chart

So, the Denver Broncos have just released their first 2008 depth chart. This means little more than who’s playing with the first unit this week, but there are several things of note within this list, so let’s dive in! (Click below to view)

Depth Chart 08/04/2008

OFFENSE:
* Darrell Jackson, as expected, is the #2 WR.
* Eddie Royal is listed behind Brandon Marshall in the #3/#4 slot with Brandon Stokley behind Darrell Jackson in the other spot (Boy, this fight is gonna get good with everyone thinking about Marshall’s suspension!).
* Yes, that means WR Glenn Martinez has fallen behind Eddie Royal.
* Cecil Sapp is still listed as starting at FB.
* Ryan Harris is starting at RT.
* Daniel Graham and Tony Scheffler have stayed ahead of Nate Jackson so far.
* No surprise at RB with Selvin Young starting and Andre Hall behind him.
* Ryan Torain is listed as the 3rd RB with Michael Pittman listed as the 3rd FB (nothing really weird here as Shanahan uses the RB/FB depth chart as a smoke screen most of the time).

DEFENSE:
* Nate Webster has the top MIKE slot.
* Marcus Thomas has earned a starting DT spot beside Dewayne Robertson.
* As expected with Lynch’s absence, Hamza Abdullah and Marlon McCree have the Strong and Free Safety slots.
* Roderick Rogers has stayed ahead of Josh Barrett in the backup fight at Strong Safety.
* John Engelberger & Elvis Dumervil will get the first team reps at DE.
* Domonique Foxworth hasn’t yet overtaken Dre Bly… yet.

SPECIAL TEAMS:
* Sam Paulescu & Matt Prater have won the punting and kicking duties.
* Eddie Royal is on top for both punt and kickoff returns.

    Royal starting week one, due to both performance and circumstance, has to be the biggest surprise of training camp for me. What an exciting development.

    Samie Parker’s absence on the depth chart altogether is somewhat embarrassing, considering he was a dark horse WR contributor of mine. Also, where is Anthony Alridge? He ran a 50 yard TD today against the first team defense and has looked good all of camp.

    I agree on Royal (although I’m bias).

    On Alridge, I won’t worry at all. Shanahan uses that RB/FB depth chart as a tool to keep people from game-planning (as well as annoying everyone playing fantasy football).

    I would be surprised if Alridge didn’t make the team only because he’ll certainly get picked up if they try to keep him on the PS.

    Also, preseason dictates a lot of what will happen with RB and S. MLB will also probably be judged by preseason. Can’t wait.

    Dee – There are two WR listings, Stokley is listed behind Jackson.

    Wow, Colbert # 4 or 5 WR….why did we pay him so much money?

    I would feel better if Hillis was the starting Fullback. We still have over a month til the season begins, so here is to Hillis winning the starting job by then! Also, I hope Holland’s fat ass gets it together!

    we’re not going to lose track of Crowder that far down the depth chart, are we? Seems we kind of liked him towards the end of last year. Are there concerns about him making the team?

    andy – I’m not concerned about Crowder making the team. I think it’s just another case of Shanny lighting a fire under a guy’s ass. Let’s hope he responds.

    I still wonder if Foxy overtaking 2nd CB and shipping Bly off is a possibility? This also makes me think we could’ve given up on Webster too early? The guy used to make a bunch of plays for the Bungles.

    Jonathan: We’ll probably only carry 3 runningbacks. If Alridge doesn’t make the team, who do you cut:

    Young? Torain? Hall? Pittman?

    Alridge is fast, but I’m 98% confident that whomever we keep will complement Young.

    That, to me, locks Young and Torain in — Torain and Pittman are the only guys we have in the ‘power runner’ category and Pittman isn’t getting reps at RB. I can see Pittman making the team as a fullback though that won’t make him very happy.

    So Young (who I think is a lock to at least make the team, if not #1) and Torain or Pittman. That leaves Hall and Alridge vying for the last slot (or the loser between Torain and Pittman if Pittman doesn’t stay aboard as a fullback).

    Tough choice for ya, Jonathan.

    I dont take any stock in this depth chart. They had to provide one and its only the first week of camp. Lets see where everyone is in a month

    I completely agree we are making too much out of this depth chart but it does provide us with some good fodder to discuss.
    Crowder stood out to me as I expect him to be much improved this year. I think Pittman is the odd man out but he is more versatile than Hall.

    Shanny is obviously using this to motivate guys like Niko, Crowder, and Colbert. However, Royal has the chance to prove himself as the #3 if he plays well in preseason. Royal even said himself that he is more comfortable playing on the outside.

    I am not seeing any ‘talent’ whatsoever on this team this year. We have no ‘gamebreakers’. Selvin Young & Darrell Jackson?? I have never seen it this bad! I have concerns…

    fisch – Brandon Marshall is as big a playmaker as we have in today’s NFL. Tony Scheffler finished among the best tight ends despite missing games last year. Champ Bailey is a ball-snagging machine, and I expect him to bounce back with 5-8 picks. Eddie Royal looks to be a stud in the return game.

    We have weapons in every facet of the game. The talent on the outside doesn’t concern me – it’s the growth of the offensive and defensive lines.
