Rod Smith to Hold Press Conference, Officially Retire

Back in February, the Denver Broncos and wide receiver Rod Smith agreed to place the aging veteran on the Reserve/Retired list. Smith believed he could return to play again in the NFL, but didn’t want to get released by the Broncos either. The Broncos even offered Smith a coaching job, which he politely declined, further indicating his desire to return to the field.

The latest from ESPN is that Smith and his agent have called a news conference Thursday. Sources indicate that Smith will announce his official retirement, although teams spokesman Jim Saccomano said he was unaware of any news conference.

Smith’s agent declined to comment.

    not only is he one of the top broncos but top receivers of all time. Rod wasnt a first round wide receiver or top wide receiever coming out of college, but to come in as an undrafted rookie free agent and have the career he had is definetly Hall Of Fame worthy. without question.

    Pat Bowlen waived the 5 year rule for John Elway to the Ring of Fame. Don’t you think Rod deserves the same consideration?

    Richard – I do. The Broncos should also retire his number, in my mind without question. I’m looking forward to discussing it more tomorrow during/after the presser.

    Definitely worthy of having his number retired, Rod Smith is one of my favorite players of all-time.

    I can only hope that he revisits the idea of coaching. He represents the heart and soul of what the Broncos are all about. I think we can only be a better team with him on the field in any capacity.

    Rod is a class act, like Jerry Rice before him. He is everything you want in a player and hopefully future coach. His 2001 season statistics alone should get him in to the HOF, but he also had an entire great career to back up the claim.

    I teared up a bit when I saw he was retiring. He was always one of my favs. I couldn’t even write the article myself on Bronco Madness.
