John Lynch

After four seasons, Denver Broncos defensive captain John Lynch is leaving the team, CBS4 reports.  Lynch met with Head Coach Mike Shanahan Wednesday afternoon, and Shanahan gave Lynch permission to look for a new team, or retire and likely pursue broadcasting.

UPDATE: The Rocky Mountain News is reporting that the Broncos are expected to announce John Lynch’s release on Thursday. In other words no trade, no teary-eyed retirement.

After nearly hitting free agency in March, Lynch returned to the Broncos at the behest of Owner Pat Bowlen, who urged him to stay another season. Seeing less and less snaps in OTA’s and training camp, and none in the nickel or dime packages, Lynch has decided to look at other options for his future.

Now that the news (or buzz or whatnot) is out that Lynch is being released, and not traded/retiring, I have to say I’m fairly disappointed. Only if he lands somewhere and ends up a starter will I be happy for him. If he ends up a part-timer elsewhere he should have honored his contract and stuck with Denver.

Maybe it’s just sour grapes… I wanted him to retire a Bronco. Thanks for the memories, taking names, and being a leader, John. But if I see you staring across my team in Week 2 wearing a blue and gold jersey, I’ll be livid.

We were literally talking about this as it happened. Kyle was saying that Lynch was going to retire and I was denying it vehemently. Whoops.

In other news: I feel like my girlfriend just broke up with me. Come back John Lynch, I’ll let you play quarterback!

  • Richard

Well. On anopther topic a day or two ago I expressed my belief that Lynch wouldn’t walk away or quit. I WAS WRONG. And I apologise to all the other fans blogging on this site.

  • Quicksilver

I would have agreed with both of you, i am shocked by this news, i guess i shouldn’t be, but i am.

  • jcampb72

I am in disbelief! At least trade him. He is under contract. I am certain he will play for another team, and the raiders are all about picking out of our trash. Not to say he is trash, hes a stand up guy with tremedous tenacity, but the NFL is a business and as a business this is not a win win deal. Sorry just frustr8d. Thanks for letting me vent.

Well, I hate to be right on this one, guys.

Just yesterday I posted: “Mark my words, if Lynch thinks his playing time will be reduced this season he’s going to walk way.”

Unfortunately, that seems to have been more accurate than I wanted to believe. So, here’s my next prediction…

John Lynch WILL play somewhere this year. What a stretch, huh? :)

Oddly enough we may indeed end up swapping Safeties with the Chargers – John Lynch for Marlon McCree.

Me thinks: He’s heading to San Diego, Elam went home to Atlanta- we’ll be seeing Lynch twice this season in a Chargers uniform. There’s no way that he’s getting more playing time there than he would in Denver though.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Don’t count out Kansas City. He’s good friends with Herm Edwards and they’d give him a chance to start.

  • Person

This is so ridiculous, so much for being a leader and setting an example.

I’m not that broken up over it. The Broncos are becoming a young team. Which isn’t such a bad thing. No we won’t win the Super Bowl this year, but I like the direction we are headed and if some of last years guys pan out the future will be bright.

    Yes!

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

Uggh, anywhere but the Chargers. I know he won’t be headed to the Raiders, and frankly I would rather see him in K.C. than either. Anyone think he could be headed back to Tampa to retire a Buccaneer?

This is the worst I have ever felt about a player leaving. John Lynch is my all time fav. I will miss him sorely.

  • Richard

Keep your loyalties with the Broncos, Garret. Yea it sucks that JL is gone, but that also means that the safety position is actually improving. I used to tip my glass with Dennis Smith at Caldonias, and he was no slouch at the safety position. It’s a new year and a new team, and it’s just time for all of us to move on. It’s also a time to say THANK YOU JOHN. You were great, a true Bronco, and one hell of a good player for the Orange and Blue. Thank you, Sir. Best of Luck, good fortune in future, and enjoy the standing ovation you get and deserve when you are inducted into the ring of fame. Godspeed.

  • Richard

PS. This is the time of year to say goodbye, as well as hello. Garret, i’ve seen the comings and goings of some of the greats, not so greats, and scores of ingrates for the Broncos. There will always be a special place in my heart for Ruben Carter, Steve Foley, Louie Wright, Rulon Jones, Karl Mecklenberg, Simon Fletcher, Greg Kragen, Kieth Bishop and others. We don’t mourn their loss as much as we celebrate their existence in our football universe. John Lynch is and always will be another star in the Bronco Universe.

  • rcsodak

Well, does he just want to play, or does he want to be on a winner? That’s the ultimate question.
If it’s the latter, don’t expect to see him with his ‘bud’ in KC.

Frankly, I think JL is going to get a cold splash of water in the face. Personally, I hoped he’d have made the team, and ended up in the Pro Bowl again, and retired on a high note. But now, he may go the way of Shannon Sharpe.

    Salute! John Lynch!

  • Danish Denver-fan!

Feels like a blow to the stomack… My favourite Bronco… I’ll love him on TV though. The first commenter described it as a girlfriend-brakeup – I agree!

  • Horvil Tiki

I cannot beleeves. Who is biggest hitter now guy? I want see the biggest hit. I never forget when the lynch crushest the TJ Hooshmanzaddas so bad to make drop the ball.

  • http://www.pennington.net/ Mike Pennington

I guess I can see both sides of this… on John’s side, why would you prepare as much as he does to be a running-down player? On the other hand, he has been in pass coverage enough times and I just groan at what he does (or doesn’t do). It sure will be a loss for us; he contributed so much to this team and I’m glad he played with us as long as he did.

  • flbronc

Not the news I wanted to wake up to for sure. Got to see a lot of him over the years, Tampa’s only an hour away from me- then his time with Denver.

Hopefully he gets a chance to start somewhere if that is his desire. I agree, I’ll be a little upset if he goes somewhere else to be a half timer. But his career warrants us letting him go, imo. Some will disagree, but I think he has earned it. Plus we can use his roster spot for someone who really wants to play on the Broncos.

  • Jason

Mixed feelings… He was a linebacker in the 46 defense we liked to call a 4-3 and a standout he was but our actual linebackers are better in coverage. I am sad to see what he brings to the locker room and running downs leave but I am comfortable with him going.

Good luck Mr. Lynch, we’ll miss ya.

    Welcome, Horvil. Big, big fan.

  • Lee

John, I luv ya, but that company you represent on TV American Financing a mortagage co.has caused a nightmare for my family. Unfortunately, I will never take your advice on this mortgage company again. I still have not received any answers from them since Ausust,2008. “They dropped the ball” Once they said we were approved with our excellent credit. Please don’t put your reputation on the line with them. You are too good for that. Still love you even though it was a real Sour experience!
