John Elway

So, Brett Favre has reportedly decided to un-retire.  Major shocker there.  However, the mixed reaction from some football fans, even Packers fans, got me thinking. If the tables were turned, would you want our Hall of Fame quarterback returning?  Would you welcome John Elway‘s sudden return from retirement?

Without a doubt, in 1999, there wasn’t a single Broncos fan out there who wouldn’t give his right leg to see Ol’ Number 7 walk back out to the football field.  These days, Elway’s 10 years older, and without a doubt couldn’t do the same things he could back then.  My hunch is most fans would rather see Jay Cutler continue his development into a potential star rather than seeing a 48-year old Elway likely struggle out there.

So let’s use the year 2001 as our hypothetical… Brian Griese just completed a Pro Bowl season with a QB rating over 100, and John Elway suddenly announces his un-retirement.  He wants to play, and he wants to play for the Broncos or be traded.

Would you want Elway back in 2001?  Could you bare to see #7 in another color?

If John Elway un-retired in 2001, would you want him back?

I think the only significant loss we had between Elway’s last Superbowl and the next season was Shannon Sharpe right? I think we could have three peated had he returned. Haven’t we seen him in action with the Colorado Crush in more recent years =P I’d love to see those highlights.

Sorry, I wouldn’t want him. He’s my favorite all-time player, of course, but part of the reason he’ll always stay that way is the way he left– just right. I couldn’t bear to see him messing up that perfect legacy, but if he did, I’d rather it be in some other uniform so that I could pretend it was just some weird alternate personality which temporarily took over his body.

Of course you’d want me back bitches! Stick a fork in Count Farvula he’s only sticking around to try and break my records!

As a fan I’d love to see #7 take the field again… however…

It pains me to say that I wouldn’t have wanted John back in 1999 let alone 2001 for one reason. Elway himself said (nearly in tears) that ‘his body just could not do it any longer.’ I believe that if there was a snowballs chance in Hades that he could have played in 2000, he would have come back. The only reason John Elway retired was that his body had finally given out.

Brett is a different story. He said that his body was fine but he wasn’t mentally up to it. You can begin discussing what it means to want a QB back that said he was not mentally ‘in to it anymore’, but I don’t think that example is comparable to Elway’s retirement due to physical breakdown.

    That’s my two cents….

Not only would I love to see Elway back let not forget Ed McCaffrey and Terrell Davis (if he every fully recovers) and Shannon Sharpe. We can always thing of our great super bowl years but I do believe we have a future Hall of Fame QB in Cutler, and if Marshall straighten his act up off the field he will also be a Superstar for us.

But I will admit. I 2001 I would have loved to see Elway Return!

Elway was great and he’s only 48 . People live to 100 years old these days, he’s gotta have 5 or 10 good years left!

at that time he was still better than Griese and company. But I am glad when he made his choice he did stick to his guns. I think Favre should either sta y or go. He looks like a clown now. IMO

I wouldn’t have wanted him back as much as that pains me to say. Of course I would want to see him play again after 1999. But John went out on top. 2 Super Bowl wins and MVP of his last game as a pro.
Elway retired with class after being the best there was. It was time and he knew it. I knew it too, but I thanked him for 16 great years and smiled as he rode into the sunset.

Farve on the other hand is a joke, he can’t make up his mind and the media is gasping for every word from his mouth. It’s a shame too, because Farve has had a great career, and now he’s turning the end of it into a circus. No class, no class at all.
