Domonique Foxworth

Domonique Foxworth has spent the past two years playing a mix of safety and corner back for the Denver Broncos. With the recent influx of free agent safeties the Broncos brought in this offseason, he’s had the chance to focus on the CB position, and compete for the nickel back spot.

If the first few practices are any indication, Foxworth has impressed enough to leave draftmate Karl Paymah out of the nickel back equation, and may even be pushing Dre Bly for the #2 spot. Today Foxworth returned an interception for a touchdown, with the entire offense (including the guys on the sideline) chasing after him. It’s not the first time that’s happened in just four days of camp, either. Head Coach Mike Shanahan was sure to sing his praises.

“He had a big play (interception) today. Foxy has had a great camp and great OTAs, and that is what we are looking for — guys that step up and get better. Foxy has done that and helped himself.”

Call Foxworth the early veteran surprise in training camp. Not a lot of guys who have been on the field for a few years can suddenly step up and improve significantly, but it appears Foxy’s on that track. It’s the perfect time to step up, too – Foxworth is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. I don’t think he’ll be pushing Bly anywhere this year, but all bets are off in 2009. If he continues to play this well, the Broncos will put in a lot of effort to re-sign him, which would likely mean the departure of Dre Bly.

I’m actually of the opposite opinion. I think the Broncos should be shopping Bly a good deal and trying to lock Foxy up long term. The guy has done nothing but give his all since he was drafted. Compare that to Bly who cried when he was getting traded to Denver instead of the Redskins.

I agree with Josh. They can get more for Bly.

Foxworth’s in a contract year, coaches won’t be able to keep him off the field…. He’s going to step it up there year and maybe even get revenge on Reggie Wayne in the playoffs. If he does well in throughout the season, I don’t see Denver not offering a better contract. As Dre Bly is be expensive, but hopefully proves worth it in 2008.

Do we not like Dry Bly? I know he wasn’t anything spectacular last year but our corners really had to keep an eye on the run and couldn’t focus 100% on the Wide receiver that they were covering. I still like Dre and hope he can step it up in the upcoming season.

I like Dre just fine. But his value is higher than Foxworth’s. If Foxworth plays better and we can get a good player for Bly, why not trade him?

or why not keep all three, it is not unheard of to have three good corners on a team, switching out for different packages or even having all three on the field in three receiver sets, with the need to beat either NE or the Colts to do anything in this league it is important to be able to cover three receivers well, something most teams struggle with.

    Quicksilver-

Exactly look at the situation in Philadelphia right now. Asante Samuel goes down and Lito Sheppard’s there to step in.
