[Ted Sundquist]

Ted Sundquist, General Manager of the Broncos since 2002, has departed as GM of the Denver Broncos, the team’s official site reports.

Head Coach Mike Shanahan said, “I am grateful to Ted for all his hard work and efforts on behalf of the Broncos for the past 16 years. Now is the time for our organization to move forward and look at new directions. We are prepared to do so, starting with our ongoing draft planning, and along with continuing preparations for our mini-camps and training camp.”

Director of Player Personnel Jim Goodman and Assistant General Manager Jeff Goodman each will have more prominent roles in football operations, while Joe Ellis, recently named as Chief Operating Officer of the Broncos, will assist on operational and administrative issues related to football.

Sundquist had the title of General Manager, but as most fans are aware, Head Coach Mike Shanahan has the final say on virtually all personnel and coaching decisions.

First question’s first: was this Sundquist’s decision or was he relieved of his duties?

I am simply floored by this move, especially this close to April’s draft. Goodman Jr.’s promotion last month definitely seems more relevant now, but even then I would have never guessed that Sundquist would be out the door.

Well, espn is saying he was FIRED, so I guess that answers any questions……

I was not aware he was doing a bad job, i mean we have struggled but surely the guy had more leeway than this.

Alright everyone, back the truck up. I remember reading over a year ago that Sundquist was most likely going to move on sooner or later. He’s had a few dream jobs that he wanted to pursue and people close to the organization have always said that Ted was more of a face at GM than someone making player and staff decisions. Anyone that follows football closely knows that Shanahan is the real personnel director but the title of Head Coach GM has gotten a bad rap of late.

I think the two have had a difference of opinion over the last year, and this was probably a mutual decision for Ted to leave. RC, I wouldn’t trust ESPN as my source when it comes to the Broncos. I’ve seen them screw up so many reports when it comes to Denver that I don’t really trust them anymore. I’ll be curious if Adam Schefter reports on this.

I’m going to try to dig up those old articles and where I found them, most likely the DPO and if there’s enough background I’ll make a post on it.

The more I think about it, it is highly unlikely that the Broncos fired Sundquist. If the Broncos were considering letting him go they would have done it before free agency began, or after the draft.

This smells like a resignation more than a termination. We’ll all hopefully find out soon.
