MyersThe Broncos worked a sign and trade deal to send offensive lineman Chris Myers to the Texans in return for a sixth round draft pick in next month’s draft. This deal is a bit of a stunner, not so much that it happened based off of what Kyle reported earlier, but how it went down.

“Myers, a restricted free agent, worked out a four-year, $11 million deal that includes $3 million in guaranteed money with the Broncos and then Myers and the new deal were traded to the Texans for a sixth-round pick in next month’s draft.”

Looks like Kubiak would rather have the Broncos do the negotiating since they still gave up a 6th round pick in return for Myers. You can definitely tell there is a special relationship between the two organizations as something like this would most likely never happen elsewhere in the NFL. Can anyone elude to why the Broncos and the Texans would go this route rather than Houston signing him restricted as the article doesn’t elaborate a motive?

They did it this way because Houston is risk averse. By trading a sixth round pick, they are guaranteed to get their player. If they make a qualifying offer, Denver can match and they lose the guy. I believe that Denver offered Myers the minimum contract and they would have received a 7th rounder as compensation under the RFA terms.

Denver gets a higher pick and Houston gets a sure thing. I’m sure there was plenty of gamesmanship in this deal. Don’t be fooled by Shanahan and Kubiak’s history.

Recall that last year the Patriots put together a sign-and-trade for Welker with Miami, ostensibly giving up an extra 6th rounder to make the deal certain. When Welker got to town, the deal he was offered was far less than what the Dolphins had been told was going to be the qualifying offer in the event they didn’t make the trade. By doing this, they swindled Miami out of a great receiver and screwed Welker out of a lot of cash.

The net effect of this trade may have been that Houston gave up the pick to get Myers for less money. If Houston had to play the guessing game to understand Myer’s true value, they may have overbid to try and scare Denver off. This way, they know what they are getting and have perhaps underpaid for a budding center.

Personally, I’d rather keep Myers; I thought he played well last year…

Wow, I’m actually really surprised this deal went through. I was never a big Myers fan, but he was worth more than a 6th rounder.

This smells like the type of the thing the Dolphins-Pats did last year for Wes Welker… instead of making it ugly with potential poison pills and the like, they just traded. Just speculation of course.

This is speculation here, but does anyone get the slight feeling Shanahan is stocking up on picks to possibly trade up in the draft similar to 2006? If he knows he can’t get Dorsey, Long or Clady at 12, I wouldn’t be surprised in the least he’s planning on moving up to take the guy he wants.

That’s possible, but he might also just be trying to fill out the roster.

6th rounders net you virtually no ground in 1st round trades.

I was thinking more along the lines of a trade consisting of our 1st round, a mid round pick (which we have plenty), and 2 6th rounders – or something equally over expensive for one of the coveted top spots.

    @r8rh8r

Thanks for explanation. See Legwold, was that so hard?

  • r8rh8r

    No problem :) Thanks.

Remember, both teams run the same blocking scheme. So their history makes this deal synergistic for both teams (as in, 1+1=3). The fact that Myer’s is experienced and tested in Kubiak’s offense makes Kubiak value Myer’s more than any other suitor (Denver probably couldn’t have fetched even a 7th rounder for him from any other team). From Denver’s end, they can get more value for Myer’s for the exact same reason. Expect trades like this to go on for years, at least until Houston is perceived as a threat by Denver.

What makes you believe the Broncos couldn’t have garnered a 7th rounder for Myers elsewhere?

  • r8rh8r

Perhaps they could have, but they got a 6th from Houston. Myer’s isn’t a marquis talent, but he’s a serviceable starter for the zone blocking scheme; specifically, Shanahan’s west coast offense. The fact that Denver offered him the minimum (as a RFA) and didn’t get any other interest, suggests that they would have retained him (due to lack of interest) if Houston didn’t have a distinctive need for him.

Excellent points r8rh8r… I was just hoping for more in compensation. We have few enough of our own draft picks on this team to begin with… as they say, “Another one bites the dust.”
