Denver is ‘not for Javon’ anymore

Just wanted to drop a line this New Year’s Eve (really New Year’s Day now for me over in EST), to let you know that a crazy offseason for Denver has already started.

Javon Walker ended a rambling press interview by saying that he didn’t want to be in Denver in 2008. Actually, he said “It’s not for Javon.” [DENVER POST]

More disturbing than considering the possibility of not having Walker, Marshall AND Stokley to work with next year, is Javon’s strange reference to himself in third person. Seriously, it just freaks me out when people do this. I think it points to major psychological issues. And in Walkers case, those may include the death of his good friend last New Year’s Eve. Maybe his injuries, the explosion of Marshall’s playing time and Darrent’s death have all played a part, but no amount of mental anguish justifies referring to yourself in third person.

    I actually watched the interview to see what the issue was about. I think the third person was in part because he was referring to himself in a business sense. I got two sort of senses of undertone:

    1) It’s Brandon Marshall’s team now. One of the reasons it’s not for Javon is that it’s hard for a guy like Javon to have to play second fiddle to a newb.

    2) I didn’t really get the sense that he was saying he wanted out. It really felt like he was resigned to the fact that the team is probably going to ask him to take a pay cut and he doesn’t feel he should have to take a pay cut, and there are plenty of teams that will take him at his current salary.

    He went back and forth quite a lot. He specifically said near the end that he didn’t actually want out, but he didn’t think it was going to work out. It feels to me as though he thinks the business decision is basically already made, and he’s resigned to it, and he just wants to get over with it and it’s going to end up with him moving on.

    If that’s the case, I can respect it. I think the team would be doing a disservice to make him take a pay cut though. I think, given the offense, that it’d be worth it to try and keep him. The trick is, there’s a lot of high paid players on the team, and it may just be a nearly impossible trick to pay them all. I suspect we’re going to see at least one big name go.

    If I have to choose between Javon Walker and Champ Bailey, I want to keep Champ. There’s a man who deserves the paycheck he gets, and maybe we won’t be able to pick up a receiver who can do what Javon does, per se, but I think we can get a guy who can be a #2 receiver to Marshall’s #1.

    Early in the season I said Marshall wasn’t really prepared to be a #1 receiver. But he grew into the role. When he and Stokley were both out there, it worked well. I’d rather Stokley go back to being the slot guy; he’s over 30 and he’s probably going to have trouble playing a whole season on the field for the majority of the snaps. Even if the #2 receiver isn’t as good as Stokley, we’d be ok as long as it’s someone who can still be enough of a threat that Marshall doesn’t pull constant double coverage. That’s all we really need there.

    That said, I’d much rather have Walker, Marshall, Stokley, Scheffler and Graham all on the field at the same time and healthy.

    Give the guy a break. Nwe Year’s always going to be a tough time for him personally as well as a lot of other people on the team.

    I wouldn’t worry about it until next month and if he still wants a trade then – that’s when we should think about the ramifications.

    I am sure Javon is dealing with all kinds of emotions right now. Probably not the best time to be doing press interviews about his tenure with the team. I do hope the Broncos keep him. He looks great in a Broncos jersey. Javon, we could resurrect the 3 amigos redux with Stokely, Marshall and Walker. I love it.

    I’m glad Miles gave the story a more in depth look with his comments. Having now watched the clip, I agree with Earl’s write up. I also agree with MB and BB32, New Year’s Eve is probably an emotional (and unwise) time to do an interview.

    I defense of my silly post about 3rd person comments… I think I was having a bit of the giggles at 2am after my wife had given me a couple of doses of straight cough syrup (liquor) to assist with a hacking cough. :)
