Update (1/23/13, 6:38 a.m. MT):  Te’o has admitting to lying about his girlfriend after discovering the hoax, which he says to have no part of creating.

The bizarre situation involving Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o has been much-talked about since Deadspin broke the story on January 16.  On Tuesday, John Elway chimed in on the situation.

“It’s a little bit mind-boggling to think what did happen, what he did know,” Broncos executive vice president John Elway told USA Today Sports. “He’s going to get asked about it probably 32 times at the Combine. Everyone is going to ask him about it. It’s hard for us to understand — why he wouldn’t know?”

The Broncos, and every other NFL team, will likely grill Te’o to find the truth behind the story.  At the end of the day though, teams will care less about whether Te’o lied or was easily fooled and more about his performance in the National Championship game earlier this month.

It looks like Elway ain’t interested in taking the chance… Apparently no one watches the show Catfish…its easier than you’d think to trick people into this kind of situation. Teo just happens to be the first famous person to fall for it.

    I don’t buy it.

But, maybe he is just that stupid. Either that or he lied, a lot.

  • Jim_Jebow

    pretty sure Te’o hearts dongs

  • areferee

    It’s an issue of character…

    PASS!

I’m pretty sure you’re right. Not saying there’s anything wrong or right with that, but I think this was an easy way to not taste the extremely beautiful college lady fruit if you know what I mean… “I have a girlfriend with cancer who doesn’t live around here” is a VERY easy excuse to repel women. And for all of us who have been in big college sports towns (KU for me), we know that the hottest of the hot chicks literally throw themselves at any and all athletes, let alone a guy who probably should have been the Heisman winner.

Agreed. Plus, he played for Notre Dame. Who knows if he would have been as dominant as he was had he played in the SEC or elsewhere. His play/stats might be extremely inflated/exaggerated because of the level of competition he played against. What happened when he went against a big time college powerhouse? He SUCKED. Mix performance in with this issue of character, and it’s a big time PASS for me as well.

Manti Te’o is from my home town. Nothing but respect for him and his family. Its ridiculous
how much media attention this has gotten. Drug charges and PEDs are
worse than this and they don’t get blown to half the proportion. Catfish says it all. Manti is NOT the 1st nor the last that this will happen to. Can you think of any other 22 yr old who made the same mistake
get the same amount of media attention? Regardless he will be a dang
good football player. Who are we to judge when we ourselves are NOT perfect? He will only get better. If the staff can keep DJ around tehn anything can happen. SMOKE SCREEN!

Agreed. Te’o’s biggest benefit was his leadership. That’s been shattered now. Without it, he’s just an average LB.

I agreeTim, it happens to a bunch of people that are more naive than stupid. I would like to think that I wouldn’t ever go there or be that naive but again people are all the time. Smart people with Money get duped the same way every day.

I have to agree that this is nothing compared to DJ’s BS, this isn’t breaking the law and it’s not turning in animal urine, but he may not be that good and maybe he is. I know that we have passed on a few LB’s that start for other good teams, this could be another if he is availible… I think this is absurd as well!!!
