Former Denver Broncos’ draft pick, Perrish Cox, is on trial for sexual assault in a district court in Castle Rock. He is accused of having sex with a woman who was incapacitated, and he faces two years to life in prison if convicted of this and related charges.

According to news sources around Denver, Cox and current Denver Bronco Demaryius Thomas met up with this woman and one of her friends at a local club. The accuser had previously dated Thomas, and eventually went to Cox’s apartment (whom he shared with current Bronco Cassius Vaughn) where the woman fell asleep.

The accuser was not certain that she had even had sex until she proved to be pregnant, and at first she thought that Thomas was the father. DNA testing proved that Cox, however, is the father, after Cox denied that he had intercourse with her.

On Wednesday, Demaryius Thomas testified for the prosecution that Cox carried the passed out woman into the bedroom, and said that “I think she’s ready.” Thomas responded that he didn’t think so, dismissing Cox’s suggestion. An hour later, Thomas testified that he went home. The next morning, the accuser went to the hospital but left before evidence could be collected because she did not want to falsely accuse anyone. If she hadn’t become pregnant, it is likely no one would ever know what happened except for Cox.

Perrish Cox was released by the Broncos in training camp this year, and did not play for any NFL team in 2011. Even with an acquittal it seems likely that no team will be willing to take a chance on him, and if he is convicted he may not be out of prison before he is too old to play in the NFL in any case.

Current Bronco players still scheduled to potentially testify are Wesley Woodyard and Cassius Vaughn.

I don’t know about the rest of Bronco Country, but I can’t seem to take my eyes off this story. It’s like road kill; I don’t really want to watch, but I can’t help myself. The more I read about this, the more I am revolted by Cox’s behavior. The defense trying to paint a picture of a wild, drunken orgy, but with Thomas saying she was passed out when he left, it’s hard to buy that picture.

Given the DNA proof of his transgression, after his denial, and the witness testimony of the event, I’m leaning toward sending him away for life. In my opinion, there is simply nothing that could possibly excuse using another person that way; this is more than just a young man making a mistake. Rape is rape and intolerable in civilized society.

Some more information on the trail, per the DP:

Cox did not testify on Thursday and in his closing statement, Steinberg said his client may have lied about having sexual contact with the alleged victim. “There may be a long line of distinguished individuals who did the same,” Steinberg said. “But that doesn’t make it rape.”

D-Mac has been covering the case. He wrote about it here:

and he’ll probably update it because of today’s events.
He’s really really thorough. He must want to be a court reporter when he’s done on the radio.

Media organizations specifically do not identify alleged victims in sexual assault cases. I respectfully ask commenters not to engage in speculation over the identity of the victim here.

Agreed. I moderated that comment and will modify the Comments Policy if people think that’s necessary. Let’s be respectful of this person’s privacy.

I’ve heard that the “victim” is a crazy party girl who frequents clubs and hooks up with lots of dudes.

You see this a lot in sports where you’re not sure if the girl is telling the truth or looking for a payday.

The problem with this argument is that it ignores the fundamental idea that having sex with someone without their consent is rape.

It doesn’t matter if they were partying, acting slutty or dressed for it. Saying these things is trying to shame the victim.

If she was passed out and unable to consent to sex, it’s rape. The law is quite explicit here.

In the trial, the accuser admitted that if Thomas had done it, she wouldn’t consider it rape. I can assume this is because she’d already had enough of a relationship with him that one could assume that he might have felt he had permission whether or not he did, but she had no relationship with Cox.

Also I don’t think she’s looking for a payday, she’s looking to send the dude to prison, but you know.

Take some time to do your due diligence on this guy. He is not only a rapist but, a woman beater as well. There are plenty of women from his OSU days that he slapped around and fought with. Nothing ever came of it bc the football staff was more concerned about him playing than his off field antics. He is known to drink, smoke, pop pills and beat up on women. I don’t get what turns women onto this guy. Perhaps it’s the fact that he plays in the NFL? I guess that would be an okay Payday if you were the only baby mother but this guy is wreck less with sperm. He has more than one baby mother

I think child by the new girl that he raped the 4th kid. He is down right disgusting. I’ve been following this trial because I am interested in seeing justice served for all of his former victims. Once he’s locked up, hopefully they will throw away the keys. Have fun without your gaudy jewelry and fake gold teeth. Learn to be a man!!! Finally…someone will stand up to you so that you can see that the world doesn’t revolve around P. Cox.

I will be back to gloat some more when the verdict is read!!!!!

And in response to the description of the victim. I don’t know her. If I had to guess judging on the women that I saw him beat up during undergrad, I would say that she’s probably “ghetto chic” (Ill tempered, low self esteem, fat arse and she probably been passed around to a few of his friends but that’s what makes him want her even more.)

I think you should modify the comment policy here so that this does not happen again.

    Hmmm…..

Suddenly Thomas paints a different picture then the one you have so elegantly painted in this article… and he was actually there, but you know.
