Broncos’ veteran safety Brian Dawkins was named to the 2012 Pro Bowl on Thursday, replacing Pittsburgh’s Troy Polamalu for the AFC squad.  Originally named a first alternate in December, Dawkins will make the ninth Pro Bowl appearance of his career.

Dawkins will join cornerback Champ Bailey, defensive end Elvis Dumervil, linebacker Von Miller, running back Willis McGahee and left tackle Ryan Clady as the six players representing the Broncos in the NFL’s annual All-Star Game.  The sextet is the most players Denver has sent to Hawaii since 2001.  Full press release after the jump.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos safety Brian Dawkins was notified by the National Football League on Thursday that he was added to the 2012 Pro Bowl roster. He replaces Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu, who will not participate in the league’s annual All-Star Game due to injury.

The selection marks Dawkins’ second Pro Bowl with the Broncos and the ninth of his career to tie him with John Lynch for the second-most all-time among safeties. Dawkins, who played 14 games (12 starts) in 2011, totaled 51 tackles (31 solo), three sacks (38 yds.), six passes defended and one forced fumble for the Broncos.

Dawkins brings Denver’s total Pro Bowl selections to six, marking the most since the Broncos had seven Pro Bowlers in 2001, and tying for the fifth-most in franchise history.

He totally deserves to be there! Congrats!

You can see how good he is by how bad the secondary was without him.  Hope he makes it back for 2012.

That is so low and totally out of line. Brian Dawkins is a warrior and wanted to be on the field for all of Denver’s last four games. He would have played this week if the Broncos had advanced that far.

Pro Bowl game hasn’t been played yet Einstein.

It’s very clear to me that after watching today’s playoff games that the Broncos need all the defense they can possibly get.  DT’s a stout middle LB, OS backer, corners and safeties.

They also need a bruising running.
