Von Miller named AFC Defensive Player of the Week

There are 16 teams in the AFC. There are 11 starters on the Denver Broncos defense. It had been 38 weeks since one of them had a performance deemed worthy of Defensive Player of the Week Status.

Von Miller changed that last Thursday night.

The Broncos’ sensational rookie outside linebacker has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week, the NFL announced today.

In prime time, Miller was a force against the New York Jets offense and Mark Sanchez, tallying a career-high 10 tackles (9 solo), including 1.5 sacks (12 yds.) and three tackles for a loss. He also registered four quarterback hits, one forced fumble and one pass defensed in Denver’s 17-13 win against the N.Y. Jets in Week 11.

Miller leads all rookies with 9.5 sacks on the year.

Champ Bailey was the last Bronco to net the award, an honor received following Week 4 in 2009.

This weekly award could be a sign of things to come: while Miller is a frontrunner for Defensive Rookie of the Year honors, he is also making noise in overall Rookie of the Year circles. But it gets even better — he’s gaining buzz as a legit Defensive MVP candidate as well. It seems impossible, but if Miller somehow continues to improve, we could be talking about the league’s best defender in 2011, rookie or veteran.

    I’m on board with you Monty, this kid is something special! In fact, I don’t believe I have seen a force this disruptive since Lawrence Taylor. 

    If Tebow can actually start completing some passes and his WR’s start actually catching them, we could literally be dark horse contenders next year on the back on Miller.

    I worry about Miller hitting the rookie wall now, I can’t imagine him having enough juice to keep playing at this pace throughout the playoffs. But you never know!  Congrats Von

    Not quite ready to compare him to Taylor just yet.  Maybe in a year, but love this kid.  Think what could be next year like if we add top quality D tackle next year.  Wow.  

    Have a feeling him and Dumervile are going to make Phyliss hurt this weekend.  Breakout game for Dumervile.

    You just know that the Coors Brewing Co. would rather he have any other last name than Miller. There will be a lot of free advertising for one their main rivals on the backs of many Bronco fans for years to come. Maybe Miller Beer should sign him up for commercials.

    I desperately wanted Patrick Peterson prior to the draft, but the Broncos definitely made the correct decision with Von Miller (not that Peterson has turned out that bad, but Miller is an immediate super star).

    Totally stoked for Von for sure… He is going to be great. LT great? I hope so. The one thing that I see thats not happening with this is how well Elvis is playing also. This 2 are meeting at the QB quite often.

    I suppose this is how Dwight Freeney does Robert Mathis… Of course both of those guys are great players that complement one another greatly as I hope Von & Doom do for many years to come.

    Not a fan of Miller or Coors, but I am a fan of Von. I do like Blue Moon though, which fits him better since it’s something that doesn’t come around often. Just like players like him.
