Some Denver Broncos fans feel their calls for Tim Tebow haven’t been heard. So they’ll make them seen, instead.

A thread on the team’s official forums indicates that a group of Broncos fans are planning on purchasing a pair of billboards in the Denver downtown area. The message? “Bench Orton, play Tebow.”

They’re not ponying up the dough yet, though — they’re willing to wait one more week for Kyle Orton to perform. If Orton doesn’t perform well against the Cincinnati Bengals this week, he and the rest of the Broncos will have to look up at Tim Tebow’s face on their commute. From the thread (preemptive sic) —

Me and 7 of my buddies who are all die hard broncos fans have finally raised enough money for 2 downtown denver billboards to read: Bench orton play Tebow w/ a few different on the field photos. We are waiting to see how orton does this week vs the bungals. No we are not timmy fanatics we are true broncos fans for years and years and we are sick of seeing all the excuses for orton. So hopefully by week 3 the billboards will be up!

(UPDATE: The Denver Post interviewed the fans, who say the billboards will cost $10,000. Yowza.)

It’s Week Two, and fans are already resorting to this. Kyle Orton doesn’t need more reasons to play better. Just do it, Kyle.

What are all your thoughts?

I’d like to purchase a billboard of my own.  On it: A picture of a living room couch, preferably similar-looking to one owned by these fans.  The text will read “Coaches Don’t Sit On Couches on Sundays.  If You Do, Shut Up.”

  • Anonymous

Yeah fans!  All you do is pay for overpriced food and tickets!  All you do is support your team every Sunday!  How dare you have an opinion on who should be the Broncos starter after 2 years of mediocrity!  Coaches are always right, I mean, they never get fired….right?

Lighten up, you’re more than free to get your own billboard with your own opinion if you want, just like these people.

  • Thendfightinirish

Where do we send our donation for the bench Orton campaign.  I approve this message!!

  • Anonymous

You know what?  You’re right. (I’d even go so far as to admit I was wrong, but that would violate the fundamental laws of the Internet so seriously, it might break the website.)

  • Anonymous

I’m going to buy a bus stop sign that says “Bench Andre Goodman – Start Cassius Vaughn”.  Unfortunately it’s all that I can afford right now.  Also, I’m not even going to wait until after the Bungals game.  My mind is already made up.

  • Plazysb

Yeah!!! Play Tebow… Are you kidding me!!!  Send him to St. Louis with Mcdaniels…   If we do play him, we will be so bad we will get first draft pick and maybe we can get Luck!!!  Orton is a better QB…  tebow is a glamor boy .. thats it.  A college star.. Move him to fullback….

  • Aerobroncos

I think it is so unfair that people are not giving Tebow a chance. All I hear is move him to fullback. Why because thats his body style? Big Ben is huge should we move him to center? (maybe after last sundays game he should be) but no he won multiple superbowls. Am I a huge Tebow fan? No, not yet. Am I an Orton fan? Nope…Im a Broncos fan. I’m a broncos fan who wants to see that spark back in denver, I want my broncos team to be a team to be proud of again. If that means giving Tebow a shot to perform and give us something to cheer by all means let’s give him a go. Enough about Orton, time to try something new.

  • http://broncotalk.net Monty

Updated the article with a link to the Denver Post. The billboards will cost $10,000. Ten. Thousand.

    Hey guys, wanna sponsor BroncoTalk???!????!!?!!!!!!??!??!?!??!

Let’s get real. Orton was not the Only reason we lost. O line was awful. We didn’t stop the run. Moreno was himself. Raiders kept us in that game. It wasn’t as close as the score. I’m going to say something you won’t like. Von was pulling up on a lot of plays. He has a lot to offer and it shows. If you are going to be a HUGE factor in games as a speed lb you have to run from sideline to sideline and put a hit on someone. He can do that and he has to do it. Fox was out coached in this game too. Game plan was awful. If Fox can’t get this team to cut down on penalties we are in trouble. 2nd and 15 won’t work with this qb. A lot of work to do here. Tebow couldn’t help this team. Only thing he could do is try to hard to make a play and give it up. The guy is not Vick. He can’t throw.

  • Ms. Denver Broncos

Were we both watching the same game on Sunday? Yes CLEARLY Orton is the better quarterback with how he performed – I’m so overjoyed and excited to watch that the rest of the seaon. Yeah right. Who are you kidding? Orton has been this way since he started in the league – he can’t convert in the red and lacks consistency. He has an awesome arm and I get that – no need to explain that. Also booing him was totally inappropriate and rude – we are all on the same team with blue and orange, right? I don’t put the entire blame on him – the Broncos need to step it up as a team, focus on football and not the personal antics of what another team throws at them. Anyway back to the point. As a die hard fan, as much as I want to win, I at least want to enjoy the game and unless I see that on Sunday, I, along with several others are probably going to be pretty irate. Now mind you I can’t afford to buy a bus or a billboard but I will never give up on my team and stand by them through everything. God Bless.

  • Ms. Denver Broncos

Thank you! I agree with you for sure. While I’m a huge Tebow fan, I also love my team and want the best for them. I saw that spark in Tebow in the last 3 games last season that gave me, along with several others, hope for the future. Hopefully he is the guy that can get it done. But you have to remember that everyone hated Elway and riped him apart in the beginning – give the kid some time and realize that we are in a rebuilding period. Nobody expects us to be a Superbowl team tomorrow or this year. As fans, let’s ride this out and hope that Bowlen, Elway and Fox do the right thing for not only the team but for the fans as well.

You’re right… Orton playing at his absolute best in his career (so said Orton) managed an 87 QB rating last year….. Tebow, playing at his worst (he’s a rookie, so everything is his worst) managed an 82 QB rating.
So basically, Orton playing his best was marginally better than Tebow playing at his worst. That hardly says “Orton is better.”

Going a step further, Tebow completed 64% of his passes this pre-season for a 108 QB rating. Orton completed less % than Tebow, with a worse (104) QB rating.

What that tells me is that Tebow not only closed the gap between himself and Orton, but he has surpassed him. For those who during the preseason said that Orton played vs the 1s and Tebow the 2s, remember, Tebow had a dramatically worse OL (yes, it’s possible, as hard as it is to believe), and worse receivers (B. Lloyd makes everyone look like a stud).

What I’m getting at is that Tebow’s floor is at the same spot as Orton’s ceiling. If Orton gives us the “best chance to win now”, and we still look terrible, then why bother playing him? We need to finally admit verbally that we are rebuilding, and start playing our young players so they come into next season with a full year of experience and knowledge, ready to hit the ground running.

Instead, this front office buries it’s head in the sand, refuses to verbally admit this team is a rebuilding project even though everyone with an IQ over 10 can see we are rebuilding, and is shooting itself in the foot by clinging onto this ridiculous notion that 5 wins with last-year-of-their-contracts vets is better than 4-5 wins with young guys who will be here for 4-5 more years and hit the ground running next season. They are messing this team up every bit as much as McDaniels was by refusing to mention the “R” word.

108 QB rating this pre-season, 64% completion percentage says Tebow can throw.

“Orton is a better QB… tebow is a glamor boy .. thats it. A college star.. Move him to fullback….”

/Facepalm. I am not sure I understand your reasoning on this. No one is saying that Orton isn’t the better QB at this point, but he isn’t going to get us anywhere. Why leave him in? So he can win us 5-6 games this yr? Where will that get us? I say put Tebow in and see what he can do? I personally don’t think Tebow is the answer, but we at least need to find out what he is made of (and I am not talking about 1 or 2 games).  He needs game experience to develop in my opinion. I get so tired of people saying we need to start Orton to win now. Lol. What do people actually think is going to happen when they say this?  Cause anything short of a deep playoff run or the SB is a waste of time imo.

So to me we basically have a couple choices:  1. Play Orton and win 5 maybe 6 games or 2. Play Tebow and yeah maybe win less games, but at least we have an idea if he is going to make it or not.  Why waste our time on Orton?  Chances are he is not going to re-sign with us next yr anyways.  I would sure like to go into next year knowing if we are going to need to draft a QB.

  • R8RH8R

I would love to buy a BroncosTalk Tee shirt if you ever get some merchandise

  • Plazysb

I do agree with u.. Orton is not the answer.. in my opinion neither is Tebow…  but out of the two, I prefer Orton and think he is the better QB. i would play Quinn before Tebow.. I don’t think orton will be back either unless we win the superbowl!!!

“I prefer Orton and think he is the better QB”

Again… Why does it matter if he is better it he is not good enough to get us anywhere?  Our goal is to win SBs not win 5-6 games every year.  Not trying to bag on you, but just curious why you think it is more beneficial to keep Orton in vs Tebow?

  • Csub12344321

Lol at some of these comments! Orton staying at qb come on I’m tired of the same song on repeat. Yes the o line was horrendous, but if I do recall didn’t we have a chance to take the league a few times in the fourth and what happen? Orton sacked him self fumbled on a touchdown play and missed some easy throws! I’m also fed up with moreNo and his sub-par play he isn’t earning his paycheck! Long story short we have a better chance with my boy T I know mc.d drafted him, but hey we spent the money let him earn it. The kid is a winner and he wants to win for us. Let the beast of his lease Fox!!!!!!

  • Wyrob

We still have a bottom ranked defense.  No running game whatsoever (38 rushing yards?!).  A questionable O Line.  And all folks can do is cry about the QB.
Which top QB would want to play here? Seriously.  The TEAM sucks.

  • Anonymous

Aren’t you tired of saying “Orton is not the only reason…” and not following that up with “WON”?

Seriously, who cares any more. The guy isn’t going to get us anywhere so give Teebs a shot for half the season. If he doesn’t bring spark or show some improvement give Quinn the next 3 games. If Quinn doesn’t bring it throw Adam Weber in there for the last 3 or 4 games. ANYTHING to cheer for is better than just waiting for Orton to muck up when it counts.

  • Bryan

Orton is lucky these guys are giving him the Cincy game to decide if they get the billboards or not.  My mind is already made up.  We know what we have with Orton, the O-line, running game, yadda yadda.

I think Orton and Tebow can get the team 5 wins.  On the outside, there is no difference.  5 wins is 5 wins.  Where it matters is we are getting 5 wins from a 7 year vet that has hit the ceiling as opposed to a new guy that is still learning.  I’d rather lose every game while a new QB gets his feet wet, knowing he is learning, rather than watch a vet choke, knowing thats the best we’re getting out of him.

  • Since 68

I have been a die-hard Bronco fan for 42 years and I have never been so disappointed in the FANS than I was this past Monday night.  Are you serious that you think Tim is going to change things on the field?  Orton battled through your chants against him and drove for a touchdown…THAT along says a lot about his character.  But we’re not talking about character here.  Orton fairly successfully established the team with the pass when this is supposed to be a running team this year. Did he make some mistakes, heck yeah, a HUGE mistake by fumbling away the ball during the go-ahead rive.  But he didn’t quit.  If you want to call for Tebow on the field now, I’d get ready for more mistakes from the QB position.  I like Tebow, but if he starts soon…we’ll be in the running for getting LUCKy next year.

  • Since 1968

What the Broncos need to do this year is capitalize on what they have.  A solid and consistent QB at the helm…yes that IS Orton.  In the red-zone, they need to mix it up with getting Tebow’s game-changing running/short passing game in there.  I guarantee the Broncos redzone offense would be scoring if they use TT in these situations.  With the rule changes of the “3rd string” QB this year, I think this is legal.  Anyone know different?

  • 5280

I swear it will never stop amazing me how many people who call themselves “fans” really dont know the actual game of football.  I think first and foremost, every one of you should be FOOTBALL fans before you are broncos fans.  It would help you to understand why the team you root for does what it does.

Gee how ludacris of an idea for a coach to think he should sit his rookie QB for 2-3 years before he starts(sarcasm).  I mean, he must be the first coach in NFL history to ever dream of such and idea(even more sarcasm).  how many QB’s ever had to sit for a couple of years before they got their shot any way? not many i bet(is the sarcasm annoying yet).

Lets see here: John Elway sat the bench behind Steve Deburg, Steve Young sat the bench behind Joe Montana, Brett favre was a 4th round pick for Atlanta, and then was traded to Greenbay and sat the bench for a few before starting, One of the best QB’s in history was a 6th rounder out of Michigan and sat the bench for quite awhile behind drew bledsoe before getting his shot and his name is Tom Brady,….Do I really need to keep listing them???

Point being is that, in a nut shell, yall need to calm the F down!  Tebow is the QB for the future in Denver.  Orton is the Vet who is obviously at his peak athleticly speaking and is not just there to get Denver into the playoffs or the Superbowl, but also the guy who is mentoring Tebow and giving him pointers on how to elavate his knowledge of defences, timing patterns, and accuracy.  Scream for Tebow all you want, but if he gets thrown into the fire too early and at the wrong time, he could end up like Alex Smith, who came out of the same exact college system that was run by the same exact coach(spread option, Urban Myer) only at a different school. The only difference is that Alex Smith was the first overall pick in the draft.  The Niners did exactly what all of you impatient broncos fans are screamin for and threw Smith in before he was ready and now look at him.  he will end up being a back up some where having never really panned out.  Denver needs to take their time with Tebow, and make sure he understands the playbook and learns how to be more poised in the pocket.  theres obviously no question that he has the work ethic to become a star.  But he needs all the time he can get to become a master at his craft.  there are more urgent dilemas on this team right now and i shouldnt have to keep beating a dead horse about them.  If they fix those problems first then Orton will be able to exacute the way he’s supposed to.  I think you guys have forgotten that Orton took Chicago to the playoffs.  He’s very capable of doing it here in denver given the right tools.  No he’s not Tom Brady, but we arent looking for a tom brady, we need a guy to hold us up while our star in training learns how to be a QB. Denver fans are to spoiled from the shanahan era of being in the wild card game year in and year out.  Tebow or not we have a very slim chance of even making the playoffs this year.  lets just focus on that before we demand that John Fox rearrange the whole team.  Ortons numbers speak for themselves.  He can put up the number to win games, he just needs the rest of the team to execute.

  • Bryan

Elway rode the pine for all of like 5 or 6 games his rookie year.  Marino sat the first 6 games.  Peyton Manning played since day 1.  Steve Young was the backup to a HOF QB, which Kyle Orton clearly is not.

Star QB of the clipboard maybe.

  • Redna

Bench Bailey, Dawkins, Clady and start Harris, Bruton, Clark instead. We already know what we get from the starters and we’re going to lose anyway so we might as well see what the young guys can do and get them some experience. Right Tebow fans?

  • Anonymous

Also, I’m tired of the “if McD drafted so bad, why would you say that Tebow is a good pick?” argument….. Guess what? HE DRAFTED DECKER ALSO!!! Last I checked, he was pretty darn good and is probably the only reason why we didn’t get so demoralized after halftime that we could score any points in the 2nd half. So if they use that argument, then they need to say that Decker isn’t any good, cause McD drafted him as well….
Those people who use the “Drafted by McD” logic are just morons who are grasping at anything they can to justify their not wanting Tebow to start.

Was it really that many games?

I see your point, but honestly most of the players you listed were playing for winning teams.  They could afford to sit them on the bench them for an extended period of time.  At this point, I don’t see Orton winning that many more games than Tebow can for us.  Honestly I don’t have as high of opinion of Tebow as you do.  I honestly can’t see him making it in this league, but I do believe he needs a fair shot to make it.  Let him play for a extended period of time so we can see if he can develop into the QB that some Denver fans believe he can be.  I don’t think sitting Tebow another 1yr or more is going to make a difference at this point.

The cult is out in force.  At best Tebow will be a Steve Sewell type player.  For some that just isn’t good enough.  Tebow was outplayed by Quinn in 2 out of 3 preseason games and the cult proclaims that Quinn is great in the preseason yet not when it counts.  Proof being Tebows preseason QB rating.  We get to hear about Orton being sacked Monday night but never hear about the 7 sacks Tebow gave up in the preseason -vs- 2 for Orton.  And if the cult is really going to play the QB rating card than Weber should be the starter based on his QB rating of 118.8

  • Redna

I’d bet most Tebow chanters don’t know who Steve Sewell is.

  • Anonymous

Tebow should start due to opportunity cost. He is a first round pick, with the potential to be the future of the franchise. Orton is not. Orton should not be a bronco next year. If Tebow stinks it up this year, it makes draft a QB a lot more justifiable.

  • jasonandrew76

I agree…Im not buying the Tebow needs another year crap. We need to find out NOW what we have there because lets face it, he may very well STINK. Id rather find that out now rather than extending our mysery yet another year. I dont want to wait another year to find out we need a few more years to draft and develop someone else. Im getting tired of losing. The frustration the other night had me already wanting to go to bed and we werent even to halftime of the first game of the year. Im dont know a whole lot about Andrew Luck, but i know he is getting plenty of hype. We would be foolish to not see what we had in Tebow before next year’s draft.

  • jasonandrew76

One more thing. If we lose to the Bengals at home, then how does Tebow NOT start the next game? How can anyone possibly justify him not playing at that point?

  • Anonymous

I agree he is deserving of an opportunity based on his draft placement but Elway and Fox have no obligation to give him that chance.

A broken clock is right twice a day.  It does not make the clock any less broken.  It may not be fair but “drafted by McD” is not undeserved.

That’s beyond awesome. Something we’ve been considering once we get our logo and redesign all straightened out.

How idiotic. And btw, saying in one breath they’ll wait to give orton wk2 to improve, only to follow that up with “hopefully by week 3 the billboards will be up”. So…….they just said they hope he fail. Nah…not timmy fans at all.
And it takes more than a couple days to do, also. So regardless of ortons play, I guess y’all get to see them.

    How embareASSing.

If you think Tebow is our guy you just plain do not know football.Nor were you at any practice this year.Get behind Orton you dumbasses because he needs the support.People do better with encouragement.

then he will have two away games where the fans doesnt matter. if he plays bad the next 3 games, then fine, start tebow/quinn.

Peyton Manning had all of these things last year and still led his team to the playoffs.  Obviously Manning is a once in a generation kind of QB but it goes to show that if a team has a talented QB they can overcome other deficiencies and still win.  THAT’S why people care so much about the QB position.

Also just for the record our defense allowed the 7th fewest yards last week and 15th fewest points.  Their rush D may have been questionable but overall they were pretty far from the bottom.  They were actually the #2 D against the pass.

  • Anonymous

Which is somehow worse than claiming McD was a master at drafting based on one player.  Out of 10 picks in 2009 3 are still on the roster.
