Denver Broncos 2011 draft grade: Rahim Moore

Over the course of the week we’ll be breaking down the 2011 Denver Broncos draft class pick-by-pick, leading up to our overall 2011 Broncos draft grade. Digest. Debate. Enjoy.‘

You’re John Elway, and you just drafted the consensus best player at his position in linebacker Von Miller. What are you going to do next?

“Please, sir, can I have some Moore?”

Indeed. If you’re John Elway you go back for another best-player-at-his-position in UCLA safety Rahim Moore. What’s moore, you trade down without blinking, stockpile picks, and still get him in the second round.

Moore will start right away, and while any rookie season is going to have its ups and downs, there are reasons to believe Moore can succeed in year one.

Scouting Report

Strengths

  • Superb instincts and awareness
  • Great range and closing speed
  • Great intangibles, natural leader

Weaknesses

  • Average bulk – small frame with short arms
  • Tends to gamble and bites on pump fakes

Film Room

The most impressive part for me watching Moore is his instincts. The guy can sniff out a play and generally make himself be in the right place at the right time. And if he didn’t read the play perfectly, he has the speed to close and make up for it.

The Verdict

The Broncos traded down and still got a starter who, if he hits the weights, could turn into a real stud at the NFL level. Moore was a great value pick at 45.

    Quinton Carter will start before Moore. Just saw 1 play where he did something special. (goal line stand). There must be a lot more to this kid for him to go this high. I stand dubious that he will last long in the league, he is too thin.

    that game vs Cal is not a great video to show of Moore. It mainly shows him making tackles 10 yards downfield on the RBs because UCLA's Dline was overpowered & couldn't stop the run. Much like Denver's Dline at the moment.

    Agreed, there's no way a safety should have to tackle the RB that deep in the field on so many plays.

    I'm glad you're one of the analysts recognizing Moore's speed, Kyle. I have seen in a few instances less than positive remarks about it. I suppose it is from Moore's 4.58 Combine performance, but he already has run in the 4.4's more than once. Moreover, when we watch him on the field, his football speed is obvious.

    Very good analysis, Kyle. I'll give you the same grade you gave Rahim . . .

    The fact that we addressed both safety positions has me ready for some football. I hope they BOTH start from day 1. We just may have had the worst starting safeties in the league last year, in terms of play making. Yes, INCLUDING Mr Dawkins. I love his passion, but if he were anyone else, and he played the way he played past year, he'd be looking for a team. Dawkins is living off of the legacy he built in Philly. Personally, I'm ready to move on.

    When I think of an “A” grade safety, I think of Steve Atwater 'the similing assassin', Dennis Smith and Billy Thompson. Rahim does not fall into that category… not even close.

    Moore is very talented & i give the Broncos an “A” for getting him after trading down. Moore is very good in coverage like an Ed Reed. Moore has the intangibles & intelligence to be coached into a great safety!

    yes he is and a ballhawhing beast and the Bronocs are aware of what they got in Rahim moore a future Hall of Fame pick

    Jack Tatum wasn't that big either Rahim Moore is bigger and can be taught because he has the heart to attack and a mind to learn he is a sponge you wait and see
