It’s that time of year again, when the four strongest, hottest, and luckiest teams in the NFL are preparing to do battle to earn the right to play in that grand Game of Games, the Super Bowl.

For the fifth straight year, the Denver Broncos aren’t among them. In fact, one could fairly  say they’re as far from that stage as they’ve ever been.

Their once-upon-a-time Quarterback of the Future isn’t. He’s there. Jay Cutler, quarterback, Chicago Bears, is coming off the biggest game of his career to face an even bigger one. It’s the Quarterback Matchup of the Season, and Cutler’s Bears are 3-1/2 point home underdogs, according to Super Bowl spreads at BetUS. The Broncos’ 2006 first-round draft pick out of Vanderbilt will face his now-rival Green Bay Packers, along with preseason MVP favorite and media darling Aaron Rodgers, for the right to play in the Super Bowl.

Cutler has his doubters. Sue me, but I’m rooting for the kid. And I’m among that group of Broncos fans (perhaps a minority) that wish he had never been traded.

Because no matter how you feel about Josh McDaniels or Tim Tebow or Kyle Orton or Mike Shanahan, the man most responsible for Cutler’s swift exit out of Denver is no longer with the team. The Broncos’ short-sighted decision to trade Cutler was part of a plan — McDaniels’ plan — that is no longer in place.

It was ultimately Pat Bowlen‘s decision, but it was brought on by McDaniels, and it was a short-term solution to a short-term problem. It didn’t pay short-term dividends (the Broncos went 12-20 in two seasons since). It certainly won’t pay long-term dividends (the picks have been drafted, disappointingly, and Orton is out the door).

Meanwhile, Jay Cutler is another four-touchdown no-interception playoff performance away from the Super Bowl.

Not that anyone’s talking about it — of the four teams still in the mix, the Bears are the biggest underdogs to win it all, despite their seed, home field advantage, and Cutler’s flawless postseason debut.

Don’t say Jay Cutler isn’t capable; he just proved he is. Jay Cutler is playing playoff-caliber football now; Tim Tebow might play playoff-caliber football someday.

And the rebuilding Denver Broncos would have been a lot closer to the Super Bowl with the offensive system of old in place, and Jay Cutler leading the way. Hopefully the new regime will have learned the lessons of old, and, given a similar situation, will let cooler heads prevail.

Cutler might have played well but let's not forget it was against the only team to ever make the playoffs with a losing record who gave up the second most touchdowns (31) and accrued the fourth least interceptions (12) during the regular season. He did deliver but we'll see how he does against a team who BELONGS in the playoffs.

  • themastermind

Here's the other thing. If Cutler stays here we wouldn't have had to trade three picks to snag Tebow. Who's to say what McDaniels would have done with them, but having to redraft at the same position unnecessarily is a tremendous waste of resources. Now…

    GO PACKERS!

  • areferee

Both Cutler and McDaniels have their detractors and their supporters. It can be fairly stated that one has lots of athletic ability and the other a good football mind.

For my money, either one of them could be EXPERTLY cast into a remake of the Mel Brooks movie:

“History of the World, Part 1”,

in the role of “Biggus Dickus”.

    May I have an Amen?

  • Ibjonnyc

I believe u are mistaken areferee. Biggus Dickus is a name referred to in Monty Python's “Life of Brian”.

  • Ibjonnyc

He has a wife u know.
her name is Incontinetia. Incontinentia Buttocks.

  • areferee

Right you are! I hang corrected.

  • http://twitter.com/dxmanning Joshua Manning

I thought Cutler was overrated (becaues he won games under a good defense) but if he has a great game against the Packers then I will eat my crow. And if he wins the Super Bowl then I will forever hate Josh McD for the rest of my life (I was a HUGE McD supporter)!!!

  • CJ

I hope Cutler breaks his hip

  • Hope

Cutler will go and win the super bowle this year and a big middle finger to all us bronco nation. He will shock the world and broncos franchise will see thier mistake and eat it for years to come.

  • Kellyleephipps

I think it's gonna come down to the Packers against the Jets, and the Packers are gonna win by 10… Cutler is going to choke next week against a better secondary. We will not have to sit back and watch him win a Superbowl at our expense…you'll see..next Sunday = 2 INT at least…

  • herc_rock

I'm pulling for him, too. Screw it. I'll pull for Brandon too if he ever gets there.

You know the boy-idiot made the first call to Pioli.

  • CJ

If your a TRUE bronco fan. you would realize how he disrespected this franchize and not like him did you read that article on him on ESPN

    HE EVEN DISRESPECTED JOHN ELWAY

THE GUYS A F-ING DOUCHE BAG

  • 5280

No If your a true bronco fan you will understand how our team made a horrible mistake and know that we have to move on. douche bag or not. disrepect or not. Where is Cutler and where are the broncos??? The proof is in the puddin. FACT: Jay cutler has takin his team to the cusp of the super bowl after being traded 2 years ago. FACT: the denver Broncos have become one of the worst eams in the NFL even statisticlly in most catagorts since they let go of cutler 2 years ago. Wheres the debate here? the facts speak for themselves. it doesn't matter about your “ya buts..” hard facts proves that cutler should have never been shown the door. He has shown up when he has to for the bears especially in the playoffs. why dont you bronco fan who refuse to step out of denial just admit it already. It's pathetic how you let your pride take over and make you look unknowledgable about the game of football. “oh he was a cry baby,” “oh he was disrespectful,” “oh, real broncos fans should hate him,” GET OVER IT! That disrepectful cry baby whom we should hate is a game away from the super bowl. if he gets in or not he has still gone considerably farther then the broncos have in the same time frame and that inarguable. It's funny how lovie cand take the same “cry baby” and make him do what he needs him to do to win. It's funny how he was called a cry baby here, but in chicago he's all of the sudden stopped crying. quit hatin and move on fromt his.

  • mikebirty

Jay Cutler is not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy

  • mikebirty

Cutler, the Packers or Rex Ryan. Its pretty sad when Ben Roethlisburger is the least evil person that could end up in the Superbowl

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

Don't play the True Broncos fan card, I mean really.

  • The Mascot Army

Yeah, he is a regular Rex Grossman (i.e. superbowl QB).

And call me crazy, but I don't think Cutler would have made an ounce of difference to the Broncos worst D in the league.

    He is a douche.

  • MrEast

    Filling my lawsuit paper work…

I really dislike they guy, he's always been a disrespectful twerp.

  • MrEast

The point isn't that Cutler was disrespectful to John Elway, the point is that he was a jerk to everyone. He still is to this day.

  • AtomicLeo

Count me in the Trading-Cutler-Was-A-Mistake crowd. I'm rooting for the guy this weekend. He has really played well since the Bear's bye week. He was just sick against Philly and the Jets. Bears don't win either one of those games with Orton. Maybe the Giants knocked some sense into him? His footwork has really improved, he is taking more sacks and working with in Martz's system. So much for mantra on how un-coachable he is.

After being shouted down on MHR the past two years about how much better Orton was than Cutler, I would enjoy watching those posters and bloggers eat a large plate of crow on Monday morning if the Bears make it to the Super Bowl.

  • Dee

I'll never cheer for Cutler , he was a piece of crap here. Has everyone forgotten the bone head interceptions, the claims he was better than Elway, the dumb looks on the sidelines.

Refusal to talk to Bowlen…. Blaming his teammates (defense) for their loses…

This guy was a punk…the thing is we got Jay Cutler in “coach” form in McDaniels …. it was never going to work because they were both little bitches and will never win a Superbowl individually…

We are going to be fine with Tebow … and the Packer's are going to stomp the Bears … if you think differently , you really weren't watching Cutler last Sunday.

He didnt play “flawlessly” … 3 would be interceptions dropped by the Seachickens pathetic defense …

Cutler is still not good enough … we will all be witnesses this weekend. ;)

  • (dee)

    above comment was from (dee)…

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

    Amen

  • Kingpins10

I agree. I always thought trading him for Orton was a horizontal move. But he seems to have grown up some. If he can hold it together and win a SB, I will admit I was wrong about him.

  • Ron

I disagree with you on only one point 5280; the Broncos have gone much further than Cutler and the Bears. They’ve just gone in the wrong direction.

  • Hope

Ya getting rid of Cutler was dumb but he is still a dickhead and would'nt be in the playoffs if it wernt for the bears defence that made up for dickheads interceptions.

  • areferee

Hey Mike. Expand please. Why are the Packers evil?

I'm neither a fan of Cutler or Mr. Foot Fetish, but may favor the Pack because of a lack of respect for BR.

Would like to hear your thoughts on the Packers.

  • areferee

Are Dee and (dee) deeferent? :-)

  • mikebirty

no idea but the joke doesn't work if they aren't.

erm, maybe because of the superbowl the Broncos beat them in?

  • Clark W. Griswold

Die hard Bear fan, live in Chicago and going to the game this Sunday. I can't believe what a great kid he is and love the fact he hates the media. So on behalf of all of Chicago thank you Josh McDumbials!

Shoulder popping all the to Dallas folks,

Back and to the left …back and to the left…back and to the left

    Bearsssssssssssssss

  • 5280

What uyou guys aren't understanding is that if McD would have chosen to strengthen the D and keep Cutler WE would have been the ones in contention for the superbowl. It's irrelavent to say they only reason cutler is doing any good is because of the defence because NO team can survive without a defence. even peyton manning. peyton can walk up and down the field but the only time he's won a superbowl is when the colts finally had a dominant defence. this is a no brainer. cutler used to throw 42-52 times a game, here and in chicago last season. when you make ur QB throw that many times in a game he's bound to throw a few interceptions. when denver ran out of RB's in '08 they had to make him throw over 40 times a game. he was the only reason the denver stayed competitive throughout the season(and brandon marshall). on top of that, in chicago, he has a dreadful Oline. so couple the to together and interceptions areunescapable. this year, the bears have stablized there Oline, they've aquired mike martz to Jay make the right reads, and their defence got urlacherback and signed peppers and now can get an offence off the field so cut can do his thing. they've built around cutler, instead of building around their scheme, which is what McD was trying to do. McD's scheme was more important then having talent and thats what makes it a bone head move to get rid of cutler.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Every quarterback has 3 “near interventions” every game. The criticisms on Cutler blow my mind.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

    Damn iPhone autocorrect…

  • broncoinva9986

A w is a w. That being said. GO PACKERS

  • Ted

Well, I have to admit Cutler has made is look like a bunch of fools. He has played very well behind the leagues worst OL. We just plain sukk. It will take years to clean up the mess this organization is in. Cutler must be laughing his a#$ off at us.

  • anthony33

Cutler was a decent QB when he left here. He is better now than when he left and has the potential still to be great. I doubt if he will, but he certainly has all the tools. Those are the facts along with having the personality of a horses ass.

Nonetheless, I dispise him and now McLiar equally. They can both go straight to hell as far as I'm concerned.

  • (dee)

What did I say? We would all be witnesses today … Witnesses to a punk QB pulling himself out of the biggest game for the Bears this season. It got too tough, too cold, and too hopeless for Cutler , so he did what he knows .. give up.

Can we please forget he was ever associated with the Broncos, If I was a Bears fan I would want him gone as soon as tomorrow. This is a disgrace, I feel sorry for the stupid Bears fans that put their faith, hearts, and money into this joke of a QB.

The QB position is for one that can be a leader of men, Jay couldn't lead a group of kidergarteners to recess. He may be able to get them to participate in nap time though… he looks like he's gonna fall asleep on the sidelines at this point, thats how bored he looks…

  • Guest

Love this post. Tebow may not be the answer, but he has heart, something Jay is certainly lacking. His injury is inexcusable! Great players play great whenever they can, however they can. His actions today solidify him as a quitter, an average player at best.

  • areferee

Jay Cutler couldn't cut the “cheese”.

Now, may we move on and pass this gas-bag into history?

  • roshon2411

Little harsh wouldn't you say? Injury in the conference championship game…Brady in 2002…Elway in 1992…

He might be a punk but I wouldn't question any NFL players toughness.

  • Kingpins10

Glad to see I was right about Cutler. He just doesn't have it.

  • Kingpins10

Tebow played an entire game in high school with a broken leg. Cutler is a wimp, plain and simple.

I agree, Cutler is a baby.

  • (dee)

Harsh is what Brett Favre did to his body last year trying to get the Vikings to the Superbowl … Harsh is Big Ben having to wear a full face shield after the Ravens broke his nose then gloated about it

Harsh is the guy that wakes up at 6am to go to work to provide for his family, and then has to watch the 10 million dollars quarterback on his favorite team, basically quit on his teammates because his knee hurts.

Other NFL players are calling out Cutler , he will never live this down.

Caleb Hanie showed some great heart … Bear fans are burning Cutler jersey's … this guy just doesn't have what it takes,

  • (dee)

For all those that still believe in Cutler…I present this quote:

“Off the record, several teammates looked at Cutler amid the postgame wreckage and shook their heads. “I aint’ gonna say nothing,” one Bears player said privately, “but I don’t see a brace on that knee. Do you?”

    http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/s

Urlacher was right… Jay Cutler is a son of a bitch, just not a tough one.

  • Kingpins10

Wow, just wow. I don't see how he can lead that team after this. Teammates calling you out in the locker room after the NFC championship game?

He might as well ask to be traded.

  • TheTroglodyte

lol I am so glad McD got rid of this guy. It's the one move he got right, even if the people he got in his place were stupid moves.

  • roshon2411

An egotistical pervert and a rapist…you've changed my mind! Clearly those guys have class and Cutler is worthless.

  • areferee

Fear not, my friend. One is in Chicago, the other in St. Louis. They ARE in hell. Both are suburbs of Buffalo…

  • CJ

My best friend is a bears fan.. ive been trying to convince him that cutler is a fag since hes been there

Thank you packers youve done what i couldnt =)

  • (dee)

You're argument is flawed…it doesn't matter to NFL Fans/Media what you do off the field… you are judged by what you can do on it. See: Michael Vick.

I'm not saying those other two (Favre, Big Ben) dont have issues..they do. But you can't dispute their play on the field.
