This FanHouse piece by Thomas George details the deteriorating relationship Josh McDaniels had with his players as the end neared.

Several Broncos players and coaches told me that this coach’s in-game knowledge is superior. But his managing skills — of players and people, of even practices — was subpar. A Bill Belichick disciple, he sounds every bit like the young Belichick that was fired in Cleveland in 1996.

More nuggets after the jump.

One Broncos player, requesting anonymity, said: “We became all business and less family-oriented as a team. Some coaches, you hear what they are saying but you don’t take it all in. That began to happen. He was very hands on and did a lot of yelling. Guys prefer a coach who lets his assistants do more of that and he oversees things. He had a tough time really knowing how to reach players. We know as players you still have to go out there and play football and win. That’s on us. But the way we were playing and the way we were responding, that wasn’t a good combination.”

Losing breeds frustration breeds more losing breeds more frustration, and it seems McDaniels and the Broncos were certainly susceptible to this trend. Desperate for wins, the disconnect between McDaniels and his players only grew as McDaniels’ intensity increased.

So will McDaniels, if given a second chance in the NFL somewhere down the line, better figure out how to connect to his players? You get the feeling he just might. If so, he’ll take the league by storm.

It’s too bad his fiery bravado didn’t spark the reaction in Denver winning might have.

The defense is awful compared to when exactly? They have been awful for some time now. How many DC's did Shanahan go through because the defense was awful? Saying the defense is awful this year is pretty meaningless when they've been awful for several years now.

Obviously Wink's system has not worked, he has not had the players prepared, it seems like 10-15 players a game someone is out of place giving up a big play. We need to clean house.

Comparing Gruden to Red Miller shows your lack of knowledge but thats OK, I know… you are reaching for something?!?

  • Benic The Red

it actually could have, and if you think through your own questions you know it would have. A coach that young with that much power and pressure on him can get obliterated by it and make poor decisions as a result, I think the comparison to Belicheck at Cleveland is an apt one given the circumstances. Clearly the answer to all of your questions is a resounding Yes.

yeah another of MCD's “integrity picks” at their finest.

  • crazykid

actually, Cox fell in the draft because of “character concerns”. People were surprised when McD picked him because he usually went after high character guys.

Man oh man …the post above about haters nails it….Tebow was and is a winner….Everyone was trying to change Elway's throwing motion forever and he still was a winner when it came to comebacks and winningest QB for the Broncs. The Bronc's even brought in I believe Morton to coach and change his throwing motion….as far as Orton….passing statistics do not win football games….touchdowns win football games…Marino had all of the stats and never won a super bowl….Everytime Tebow has touched the freakin' footbal this year, except for the meaningless up the middle crap calls by ol Josh and Tebow scored a touchdown (three and counting)…any one who says Tebow's college stats are meaningless are a haters…(probably bez their conscience is bothering them for having their girlfriend have an abortion and having killed an innocent life)…mark my words…Tebow is a winner and has proven it and will prove it here if the haters do not first pressure Bowlen into trading him…if they get Elway to consult for them (whom Bowlen is tight with) they will keep Tebow…Elway can recognize a “gamer” when he sees it…you farts who say a LB can outrun Tebow missed the games where he proved that to be false (two times on the goal line with K.C.)….you are haters and are so into stigmatizing and stereotype-casting…let him play…and what is already clear will happen…he will score touchdowns and that means wins…its about winning not mechanics…. or personal prejudices against someone for their beliefs and moral values which other may lack… Every close game we have had this year was lost by Orton for getting caught from behind, getting sacked, or missing a high snap (which both Elway and Tebow have proven, for being gamers, they would have snagged and turn an otherwise potential busted play into something when it counts… that is what they pay starting QB's for..to make those plays…Orton is a nice guy with the perfect get along with the coach attitude but frankly he cost us some games like the Jets and N.O. and again it comes down to winning in the end…not statistics…sorry passing yards do not win games..being a gamer does…Tebow is a gamer…so was Elway…Orton reminds me of Steve Tensi…anyone out there talking remember those days when our QB could never get away from the rush to make a play when it counted and the game was on the line? Agree with much of your sentiment, but it is hard to read.

    Paragraphs, Man…

    Paragraphs.

  • LevonZevon

I like your passion (paragraphs or not). But we never played New Orleans this year.

    ………………………. Just for you………………

But I think its a no-brainer: start Tebow until the season ends. Period. If John Skelton can starty as a fifth-round pick, why not Tebow (who we need to see waaaaaaay more of to make some critical decisions).

Studesvill is deluded if he thinks he's keeping the HC job. Bowlen ought to insist on Tebow starting and keep to himself the other good reason for it.

Hint, hint. WE give the fans a no-lose situation.

Tebow does well and we have hope.

Tebow sputters and we have higher 1st round pick (and maybe go for 6'7 Ryan Mallett now that we see Tebow's limitations).

But playing Orton to save face with meaningless wins that hurt us in the long-run is salt in our wounds.

  • LevonZevon

    Mike Vick and Esiason too.

  • tom horn

Levon, I meant S.L…thx for the observations…..like I was saying after watching today's game…Denver can not win…the reason they cannot win is because they do not score touchdowns and they do score to8uchdowns bez they not have a play maker…it is difficult not to like Kyle O. as a person…..but my goodness Kyle you have to make some plays…being a starting NFL QB means being a play maker…even if some of the rush is the OL's faults as a QB with the option of moving a little bit, some of those sacks could be avoided…man is it frustrating watching Kyle O. play….I like the man and he had kind words Josh…”not liking anyone get fired”, but you have to make plays when out there….Tom Horn
