Hours after Josh McDaniels was relieved of his duties as head coach of the Denver Broncos, the hottest name on the tip of every media member’s tongue to replace McDaniels was Air Force head coach and former Broncos assistant Troy Calhoun.

This morning, Calhoun took his name out of the running, Frank Schwab of the Colorado Springs Gazette reports. Calhoun will remain committed to the Air Force, he said in a statement.

Schwab suspects the announcement (from Calhoun, through the Air Force) was made in response to the Broncos’ reaching out to Calhoun. Calhoun isn’t interested.

This puts Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak (longtime Broncos player and coach) and Minnesota Vikings interim coach Leslie Frazier (who received an interview during the team’s 2009 head coaching search) at the top of the Broncos’ suspected wish list.

I like the suggestion and implications of bringing in Urban Myer. Proven winner, who has talked about making his system work in the NFL. Probably not gonna happen, and I can already hear all the whining that will be brought up about Him. But I think it could be really good.

I hope the Broncos hire a strong General Manager first. Then the General Manager can hire the coach. I don't trust Ellis and Bowlen to make a good decision with hiring a coach. Let a true football man make that call gentlemen while you two wait for his decision to do any more announcing.

  • Darwin

Oh and please don't hire Kubiak. How can they even consider hiring him when he can't take a very talented Houston team to the playoffs?

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

I would take him as long as his OC and DC had NFL experience. Especially a guy that can help convert that spread offense into an NFL system. I'm thinking someone Jeremy Batesesque.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

Who do you think has helped build that very talented team? Plus it's tough when you have to play the Colts twice a year. Houston is stupid to fire Kubiak now when they're on the cusp of becoming a contender. I think it would be our gain.

They're not gonna hire Kubiak or Urban Myer. And the Vikings won't let Leslie Frazier go

  • denverfanindallas

    Houston has one receiver…
Kubiak could get some of what Denver was back…
I want to see that offense back in Denver…
Imagine the cutbacks with Knoshon's speed…

I really don't think Houston will will fire him…
I'm glad the college coach is out of the question…
We need someone who has won, IN THE NFL…
Not someone who is gonna “convert” something to work from the NCAA…

  • Mergrath

    Exactly what I'm thinking!

I'd be down for a Brian Billick, John Fox, Jim Harbaugh, and I'm sure there are more. But we really need a good GM first…

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Jonathan Douglas

Agreed. You'd have to wonder if part of the reason Elway is being brought in is to convince Kubiak to come back to Denver. I'd be ALL for Kubiak coming back – in a heartbeat. But I don't think he would willingly leave the team he's spent YEARS building in Texas.

  • crazykid

Jim Harbaugh and especially Gruden are my choices. I dont wantCowher like some people, because i know we wont get him

  • kerry

um Proven college winner. if you havent noticed by now, gimmick players dont work out in the NFL and bringing a gimmick spread offense to the NFL will spell disaster on a long term scale. have you forgotten college coaches who tried their gimmick offenses? Steve Spurrier, Bobby Petrino, Nick Saban, Lou Holtz and so on and so on. Urban Meyers former QB Alex Smith has been a COLOSSAL bust because he came out of the same retarded gimmick offense as Tebow did.

  • kerry

it would be our gain IF we hired a great D-coordinator. Kubiak offense with a great defensive mind would be great.

  • anthony33

John Fox??? Not only would I not buy anything Broncos again, I'd sell the stuff I have now. What are you thinking.

I like Kubes and lure Nolan back or a bonafide DC.

  • anthony33

    denverfanindallas,

Now you're talkin'. Couldn't the Broncs simply ask for permission to talk with Kubes, similar to what Nolan did with the fins? Hey, if he wants out, why the hell not.

Altough I not sure what Moreno speed you referring to.

  • Mergrath

What has “Kubes” done in Houston? LOL! Absolutely nothing…that is the answer. If we go that route we essentially just rehired Shanny….and that would make sense how?

John Fox is a good coach working with little tallent in Carolina. When that team did have tallent he took them to the NFC Championship game! I would love to have him!

    Career record 72-65-0 (Regular Season)

    5-3 (Postseason)

    77-68-0 (Overall)

  • Colo_butler

I vote for John Elway as head coach. This I would like to see

  • anthony33

Wow, how did I miss that? That John Fox is a stud, 72-65 over 9 years.

Whew, better jump on that ass clown right away.

  • Suleski

It would probably save Tim Tebow's career. Remember how Meyer cried when Tebow left.

  • areferee

Kubes has very close ties to his hometown, Houston, not to mention with Texans owner, Bob McNair. I don't think the bloom is off the cactus quite yet.

  • areferee

Wouldn't ya love to see this guy looking back from the Invesco podium every week?
