It was a close game through four quarters — a game in which the Denver Broncos defense and running back Knowshon Moreno showed signs of domination.

But after Knowshon Moreno‘s career-long 24-yard run in the fourth quarter, deep into Chiefs territory, head coach Josh McDaniels decided to throw the ball… and throw it the Broncos did, eight straight times.

Down seven, the baffling decision resulted in a field goal and two punts.

It also resulted in a Chiefs victory. Kansas City took out the Denver Broncos 10-6 in Week 13 NFL action at Arrowhead Stadium.

Moreno finished with 161 yards rushing on 23 carries. Kyle Orton, with more opportunities, finished 9 for 28 for 117 yards.

I’m honestly too upset to post anything more rational here. As I put on Twitter, I’ve never been this upset at a Broncos coach. You can blame Kyle Orton if you like, but in my book, every Broncos quarterback has always struggled at Arrowhead. It was asinine of McDaniels to keep giving a struggling Orton chances that late in the game with Moreno running so, so well.

Todd Haley hugged McDaniels after the game. He would.

Your well-reasoned reactions in the comments.

    Orton looked bad today.

    :(

That will do, That will do.

  • socal den fan

even though Orton was off winners always find a way to get the win.

  • lars94

    Agree 150%!

The Bronco strengths were passing–but their weakness was the run game. Good teams take away their strengths and make their weakness beat you. Kansas City all but give the game to the Broncos through stupid mistakes, but as you stated: “…winners always find a way to get the win.”

  • tss59

Keep waiting for some fourth qtr heroics Orton had B Llyod in the end zone twice but couldnt make the throws. Orton has played well but cannot come up with the big play in crunch time. Liked the effort on Broncos part. Todd Haley is a punk he spent more time on the field then some of the players dont like him

  • BroncoMan24

I pretty much said all I have to say in previous posts. I completely agree with your assessment. Yeah Kyle Orton had a bad game, but like you said who doesn't in KC. Even if it hadn't been in KC, QBs will have a bad game from time to time. McD definitely should of fed Moreno more or even Lance Ball if Moreno was tired. Time and time again McD reverts back to the pass. It is almost like he is trying to lose the game (not really, but felt like it). McD and his passing mentality. On top of that, not going for it on 4th and 4 with a little more than 2 mins left was a stupid call as well. All KC needed to do is get one first down to put a lot of pressure on us. That is asking a lot from our defense. He should have known better. Whatever we need to do whether it is getting a GM in here or get rid of McD, there needs to be some changes next year (assuming we have a season). Although, I believe we will manage to screw that up as well by trying to pick some no name coach/gm or not making it a focus and end up with a last minute choice. I can't really say that I am too pissed off, since I wasn’t expecting much from us out of this game. I think I have built up an immunity of the past couple of years. I used to yell and scream at the TV like a lunatic, but not so much anymore. Go Broncos!!!

  • BroncoMan24

I can't stand Haley. He is such a crybaby!

  • TinFL

    Four years of 8-8 mediocrity wasn’t quite enough a humbling experience . . .

    To those who said we’d go 3-13 this year . . . I laughed . . . it doesn’t seem so funny in December . . . .

We needed help on defense . . . so we hired a guy who would have his hands full running a neighborhood fast food chain . . .

He trades away our offense . . . including our pro-bowl players . . . not to mention Hillis and Torrain and anyone else who could have had an impact . . .

    We won’t mention his draft expertise . . .

We need RumpelMcBowlskin to wake up and sell the team to someone who is awake most of the time . . .

This really won’t be funny next year . . .

And Orton went down again without a fight. Just like San Fran. Didn't Denver also have a shot at the end of the game earlier in the year when Orton just folded?
    Ugh.
Well if McDaniels keeps starting Orton it will make the decision to fire McDaniels pretty easy at the end of the year.
Can't believe how disappointed I am right now.
Orton was off all game… and McDaniels just kept giving him the ball. Underthrown balls, overthrown balls, bad decisions, late decisions….
Just disappointing…. A bad season gets worse with bad decisions.

I was hoping Denver would win so they wouldn't have to fire McDaniels at the end of the year. Just bring in a proven GM and let that person make all the decisions. McDaniels is out of his depth having to do both jobs. He is a first time head coach that was set up for failure trying to do both.
Head Coach, Offensive Co-ordinator, AND defacto GM (well he had final say on all decisions)

It was good to see Moreno play the way I thought he could. He is a special player when healthy and given a chance.

This puts the Lombardi Trophy in jeopardy…

    Just kidding… Kyle Orton… Jeezus.

As my father said after the game, there's something going on there, something we're not aware of. Knowshon Moreno, finally is who we need him to be. Champ Bailey, still the best doing it until someone proves us wrong. The entire Denver Broncos defense, well, we have the Kansas City Chiefs number, the Orton to Brandon Lloyd connection was lost today or the Broncos are 4-8.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

Agree with about 40% of your post.

  • TinFL

Kyle . . . when I wrote my post I am wearing my Bronco 25th Anniversary T-shirt with Randy Gradishar and Haven Moses on the front . . .

It seems karma comes around . . . we went 13-3 with Jake “The Snake” Plummer . . . he got benched for Cutler . . . then we went 8-8 for three years . . . Shanny paid the price . . .

It was not whether or not it was Mike’s fault . . . it was the way in which Pat Bowlen handled the situation . . . easily the most disgraceful event in the history of the Denver Bronco’s . . . . you know it’s true as do all Bronco fan’s . . . and every Bronco fan is paying that karma now . . .

    I don’t know what your 40% agreement is including . . .

But we need new ownership soon . . . .

  • Tin FL

    Ian . . .sorry . . . thought it was Kyle on the post . . . T

  • Buckskinchief

when the run game gets going orton throws for less than 200yds, but it comes down to coaching and play calling

  • tss59

Champ had perfect game you are right about Moreno I feel pieces are in place Orton had oppurtunities with Llyod and I would have liked to see the quick pass to Royal a couple of times. Iknow holding could be called every play but I saw a guy tackled to lead to the field goal to end the 1st half and some great neck tie jobs on Ayers

  • Buckskinchief

yeah i agreethat not going for it on 4th down with more than 2 min left was lame , but what is he afraid of losing home field advantage in the play-offs

  • tss59

Torrain stayed hurt while he was here hard to evauluate him Hillis you got to love and wish he was here our recieving core is probably better as a whole now even with Marshall gone Cutler is talented but he still seems a lot like Jeff George only time will tell. We need to see Tebow season gone but the team played hard I was proud of them lets be spoilers and keep chargers out and play out the season with pride GO BRONCOS

  • virginiabronco

Can somebody please tell me why we abandoned the run at the end of the game? It was the only thing working on offense.

  • tss59

Everytime I saw him he was in the middle of the field crying

  • Vince_marine

Orton is not the leader we need him to be. He can't handle advirsity at all! When the game is on the line he chokes. With our record we need to see Tebow. Orton isn't a bad QB when he has time and a lead, but we need an X factor QB that can bail the offense out when it needs a 1st down.

  • lars94

    Cuzz McDaniels sucks!!!!!

  • anthony33

KC shot themselves in the foot on offense. Except for Bailey and a few good plays sprinkled in here and there, the defense sucked again.

Moreno looked like a first round pick today.

Orton was Orton… horrible on the move and nothing in crunch time.

For the love of God start Tebow next week (no pun intended).

  • Janice Mills

Kyle, I was there. I agree with you.

  • MrPete

Unfortunatly we won't see Tebow this season. McDaniels will keep Orton as the starter because he will feel that Orton will give the team the best chance to win. It may not be on the surface, but McDaniels knows he needs wins to keep his job. Again another example of him looking at the trees and not the forest. We need to start evaulating the young talent to better help identify future needs. Now with that being said, why is it that the fans, and the rest of the world has been aware that Denver needs to address their defense, and neither Shannahan, McDaniels or Bowlen seem to see this. My fear is if McDaniels survives this season to coach another year in Denver he will again focus on offensive players and not our needs.

Bowlen needs to hire a savy GM, someone that can first override some of the stupid decisions McDaniels makes and give McDaniels guidance. If we are stuck with McDaniels then at least minimize the damage he can cause, if it's not already to late.

  • anthony33

Agree. If he is going to stay then get a true GM

  • anthony33

Unfortunately I am beginning to think the only reason we will not see Tebow is because 70% of the draft critics were right.

I still think he is a winner and will put the offense on his back, something Orton has not been able to do.

  • MrPete

The only way to see if there right is get him on the field. If you start him the remaining games, chances are you will get a good look at his potiental.

  • Hope

    time for some Tim Tebow!

  • crazykid

I think they should hire me as a GM! lol
Even though i'm in high school, i know a lot about the draft and college prospects, and i'm a “high character guy”. what do you think? should the Broncos give Crazykid a chance?

  • tss59

Did you see big Ben one could only hope Tebow could bring some of that extend the play big mobile QB lets see if he canthrow the ball we know he can run. The plan of Orton gives us the best chance towin could be true but Tebow is our 1st rounder he needs to be tested and this would be a relativly pressure free situation for him its not like the playoffs are on the line

  • denverfanindallas

hate to kneejerk… but i think i was driving the MCD optimism bus, and today i think i jerked the wheel in to a concrete culvert, totaled it, and set it on fire…

the new bus is cower powered! haha

but seriously, this was hard to watch. I'm down here in Dallas, watching the Cowboys turn around a horrible season to at least be able to hold their heads high… depressed… pissed… looking at my college basketball team's schedule WAY TOO EARLY!

We are not a good football TEAM. We never have our D and our O show up on the same day and everything about that screams “COACH” to me… If it were just the O or just the D, maybe the blame could go somewhere else (for convenience sake) but not after this.

Play calling was a joke, Kyle didn't have it, Moreno did, Josh HAS to realize that.. There are only 2 questions to ask.. 1) when does Tebow play? 2) how do you convince a coach to come to Denver when you only selling point is “future” quarter back who hasn't started a game?

  • Laramiefan

Denver channel 9 has a seal at the Denver zoo predict the winner by throwing two footballs in her pool . One football is Denvers and the other is Denvers opponent . Gidget is the seals name . Gidget has correctly predicted the winner 7 times so far by diving in the pool and retrieving the ball that she thinks will be the winner . Strange , huh ?

  • mikebirty

has anyone mentioned the officiating? Calling Kyle Orton down when his knee was about 2 foot off the floor when he shoveled to Moreno was just about the worst call this season.

  • Kbryant3019

hey has anyone heard that they will keep mcd as a asst coach but bring in a head coach.just wanted to know because that might work with them not wanting to pay 3 coaches.anyway just wondering if i missed something or if anyone heard that or if it was bs

  • Vince_marine

I follow the Broncos very closely and I've never heard that before. I could be wrong.

  • Vince_marine

Great point regarding the GM….I'd honestly like to see John Elway as the GM. What do you think?

  • mergen

7 out of what? 12? that seems pretty normal to me

  • TheTroglodyte

A head coach will not and can not step down to be an assistant on his own team. There are SO many fundamental things that would go wrong with that.

  • BroncoMan24

Although, I would love to see Elway in some way a part of the Broncos organization, I don't really think he is GM material (at least yet anyways). When I say this, I more mean as far as the talent evaluation aspect. We need someone that hasn't been out of the league for several years and has a defensive background in my opinion. Not saying that Elway couldn't eventually be a great GM, but I believe we would need some time to groom him.

  • BroncoMan24

    I agree

  • Elryo4208

that call killed the game. My leg hurt from hitting it so hard. Knowshon had blockers in front of him and room to run. Kc refs didn't want him to bust an 80 yarder in the fourth. I've been trying to find a place to complain about that. fn terrible.

  • Elryo4208

Mcslut sucks. we all know it. Just a cheap whore from the east killing good west coast offenses. the game was a rushing game from beginning to end. champ was on lock down. I don't think bowe had a catch all game. mcd fantasizes about cassel from his new england days and can't call any decent plays. quit hugging each other at the end of the game. If mickeyd's had any respect for manhood he would flip haley the bird and the refs for just giving them the game in kc. beautiful play by orton whistled dead. they call cassels fumble intentional grounding when dj took it to the ten. horrible officiating, bad play calling. keep it on the ground when its working. orton can still get marinos record this season. tebow was a waste of 3 picks and 4-5 years of good seasons. thanks for brady quinn a hole. where'd are arkansas meatloaf go? to the dog pound? great season. orton's been throwin like elway before this game. hard and accurate. can't hate him for that.

  • kerry

um Moreno has 2 100 yard rushing games (against the same team by the way) and he is all of a sudden “the guy we need him to be”? really? he cant bust a grape against a serious defense.

  • kerry

this was an absolute trainwreck of a game. im DYING to hear more about how this isnt Ortons fault whatsoever. yeah MCD is a joke of a coach but McD isnt the one throwing the passes. i mean 9 completions!!! are you F-ing serious? and this guy is supposedly the best player the Broncos can offer?!? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. what an absolute joke. he and MCD and Tebow need to go so a REAL Coach and QB can be had. we will have a nice top 3 pick this year so a new coach can draft a Ryan Mallet or Andrew Luck. you know, QB's that have actual NFL potential UNLIKE Tebow.

  • kerry

how about 3-9 this year with Orton starting? can you hate him for that?

  • kerry

still doesnt excuse Orton from 9 completed passes all day

  • Elryo4208

I wouldn't put the 3-9 year on Orton who's second leading passing in the nfl on his way to another 20-10 season as a qb. He has composure, intelligence and a good arm. losses are because of our defense and their inability to get turnovers and give orton more chances and momentum. 9 completions because the 1st quarter was chiefs long drive until we finally get the ball to eat up the second with runs and should've finished with a td. he hardly threw the ball at all in the first half and brandon carr was all over lloyd all game. perfect throw to decker to get first down in third. they made us beat them with the run and we should've. Luck and Mallet are going quick in the draft and hopefully cam newton is availiable in the second round. He's an upgraded tebow. lloyd is the most improved receiver this year and best receiver this year in the nfl. dawkins, bailey, dumervil, moreno, lloyd, dj are arguably the best players.

  • tss59

Agreed they should have given Orton that play I think cause he gt hammered earlier and his lack of mobility but he made a hell of a play Some QBs can have 3 guys hanging on them and ref will let them continue play I thought the call on DJ was weak too he was actually turning his back on reciever earlier when our rookie from reciever from Minnisota caught a ball over the middle took him down head on
