In reference to the person on his staff that leaked what went on during the private meetings being held in regards to Spygate II; Josh McDaniels yesterday said “I’m not going to go chasing ghosts about [who] that [was].”

So, take a long look in the mirror Denver fans.

It’s been five years since the 13-3 season and the AFC Championship loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, four years since the Broncos tossed out Jake Plummer and a winning season to make way for Jay Cutler and mediocrity.

For every controversy McDaniels has brought to the Broncos, history has proven to make him look smart (though Cutler gave a good effort at making McDaniels look dumb Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles). Brandon Marshall‘s looking pathetic, Tony Scheffler‘s basically ineffective, Alphonso Smith admits that he single-handedly lost the Thanksgiving Day game against the New England Patriots.

The one dark horse in all of this is Peyton Hillis and he has been downright incredible as a Cleveland Brown… Yet, this isn’t the time nor place to discuss that. Four out of five ain’t bad.

Four out of five ain’t bad… Yet (and still) Broncos fans demand perfection.McDaniels says that he won’t chase ghosts, now what are Denver fans chasing?

There isn’t a quarterback in existence that can replicate what John Elway did with the Broncos. That’s what made Elway Elway… There may very well never be another Elway. That is the cold fact.

Kyle Orton has (quietly, though not around these parts) put together an incredible year, but has come up short where Elway didn’t. When the game is on the line Broncos fans are so used to seeing that composed man on a mission. Orton doesn’t deliver that, so fans scream from Tim Tebow.

As MaxDenver’s Andrew Mason put it so eloquently Sunday on Twitter, “Can Tebow play defense?”

So there in lies the problem, with McDaniels and his ambition. McDaniels was able to bring in Mike Nolan and the Broncos’ defense flourished early in 2009, whether it be McDaniels or Nolan who allowed no corrections following week six may never be known publically. McDaniels and Brian Xanders went all offense in the draft early on, addressing a wide receiver and quarterback position that didn’t quite need to be filled. Picking up offensive lineman that have experienced some growing pains in their rookie seasons. Before finally turning to the defensive side of things.

Granted an injury to Elvis Dumervil in the preseason likely wasn’t in the predictions and the same Tebow cries fans had in April would have been replicated had Denver traded up to select an outside linebacker in the first round. There’s nothing to say that Dumervil would have been able to replicate his 2009 season (which he had under Nolan) in 2010. Robert Ayers has certainly looked better and Knowshon Moreno‘s starting to look a bit like who the Broncos intended to draft (minus a costly fumble Sunday).

So let this be said, I am throwing the last tiny ounce I have behind Josh McDaniels as the Denver Broncos head coach (as is Pat Bowlen). This is it and it’s all I have, you leave the dance with the date you brought and he’s got one last season in my books. No, I’m not thinking that even playoffs are possible this year, but I am also not for the Broncos folding for a top five pick. I will be there, every Sunday hoping that Denver can mess up someone else’s opportunity to make the playoffs. Oakland, Kansas City, and San Diego have never shown any mercy on Denver, why should the Broncos lay down for them?

I am behind the Denver Broncos, as I know a lot of fans are. Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Rams gave the whole Broncos nation hope and a bit of that fire back and even though they failed, they failed falling forwards.

Now, my hope is fans too can stop chasing ghosts.

I agree. Denver has one playoff win since Elway. I'm one of the biggest bronco fans ever, but to think that every year we “should” go to the superbowl or playoffs is crazy. Our defense is not good. We settled off our offensive needs last draft, and at times our offense looks good. Next season I see them being even better. Now if we can focus our draft this year on defense, we could actually be a good team next season. Our defense needs help, and a top ten pick in each round could do that. Plus we have two second round picks. Lets get a monster DT in the first round, a DE in the second round, a maybe another DE or LB in the second round. If we drafted another LB in the 2nd round, our LB's could look like Doom, Dj, 2nd draft pick, Ayers. And we would have good depth with Mays in the middle. Or we could go safety in the 2nd round, I'm still a huge Dawkins fan, but he will retire soon, and Mcbath is aaaalways hurt. Then maybe in the draft get some depth at the lines on both sides. Thoughts?

and what do you guys think about this?

  • Dont sound like a Chiefs fan

There are no excuses to be losing when you have the support of the best owner in the NFL PERIOD!!!!!

  • Jarellano_25

I don't call 3-8 an incredible year for Kyle “Almost” Orton. Yeah the Alphonso Smith thing doesn't make McDaniels look smart, remember, it was DENVER that wasted a 1st rounder on him, not Detroit. Please no more Cutler references, he has been gone awhile now and do we really need to be reminded of his 8-3 record this year?

  • Dont sound like a Chiefs fan

Denver hired McDaniels to WIN immediately remember. We weren't a team that was in need of rebuilding from scratch. It has now turned into a team that needs that has to be rebuilt from scratch!

  • Bob

How do you expect to hire a rookie head coach and win immediately? . . . . hence, ROOKIE HEAD COACH. We will win, eventually. If this team was so good when he took over, why didn't we have even one playoff appearence with all our talent prior to being traded, when Shanny was the coach?

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

I like what Woody had to say, Elway's speech before the KC game got the team pumped for the blow-out…

  • kevindow

sounds like a great idea to me, but maybe take a safety in the second round.

  • Dont sound like a Chiefs fan

I thought Bronco fans weren't like chief fans I see I was wrong. Maybe after next year we can say next year.. and so on…

  • kevindow

so true, I hardly ever remember reading posts about firing Shanny in his last few years here. It seems like it was a complete shock to everyone. Yet he was making awful personnel choices, his play calling was atrocious and stale, and he couldn't get us to the playoffs. A change was needed. Gun slinging QB's & zone blocking do not win the Superbowl anymore in the NFL, so a new scheme and a house cleaning was needed. It will take time people. Be patient and realize that it is not possible to rebuild overnight. Like Ian Henson said “you leave the dance with the date you brought” We spent a lot of money on a corsage and a tux rental, lets not throw it away until all is lost.

  • Ic_bronco7

I agree we didnt have to rebuilt the whole team all we needed was better Defence of players in some areas…and his gotten almost nothing but offence in the draft..Mc dumass is good at one thing and thats getting new England REJECTS if Bill didnt want then y would u get them dosent make since go out there and find ur own talent like shanahan did..

  • TheTroglodyte

Ian I almost always dig your articles but this one is SO far off base. EVERYONE knows Nolen left because McD wanted to do things his way. We lost one of the greatest D coords in the game because of an immature know it all head coach.

We didn't fall forward against St. Louis. Look at every 4th quarter game St. Louis has played and you will see that team consistently folds in the 4th. They have a young inexperienced team that has a problem closing out games. They were 1 – 16 last year and we lost to them. Until they quit playing, we were getting blown out by them.

McD has completely ignored doing anything logical to fix our defense and while our offense wasn't better than average with Cutler and Marshall, it was at least average and not a bottom dweller that gets shutdown every time it plays someone decent.

After all was said and done we traded Cutler for Orton and a bench sitting TE. Cutler has A LOT of major faults but anyone who thinks Orton is as good or better is sipping SO much kool-aid they have a permanent sugar rush.

We traded a first round pick for a second round pick and then used that on a CB we didn't need, then traded him after ONE YEAR for a 3rd string TE. The draft was stupid enough but then we didn't even give him a chance to develop before we lopped him off for a nobody!!!

We traded back in the draft this year and looked so smart, racking up extra draft pick after draft pick, it seemed so obvious we were going to draft an entire defensive line, and then we traded back up to get Tebow!!!! I like Tebow but WTF did we ship off Hillis to the Browns so we could get Quinn for???????????

Our head coach looks like a nervous 15 year old boy at our press conferences who has no people skill, no leadership skill, and obviously no personnel skill.

I say all Broncos fans should boycott all home games and force Bowlen to get a real coach.

  • Ic_bronco7

kevindow are u really that dumb??? U say gun slinging QB zone blocking.. dont win superbowls but yet he won to in arrow how stupid are u??Elway gun slinger Hall of Fame QB..and how many 1000 yard rusher did he produce??any team would be happy to have a 1000 yard rusher once..How many superbowls has Mcdumbass won by him self??? yeah Zero!! i would be up for letting a proven coach have another year but the only thing mcdumbass has proven he can turn a team with superbowl hopes into the worse team in a little less then 2 year..

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

If you think Cutler got the Bears to that record you're mistaken. Their defense has been playing lights out and the Zebras gave them a win against the Lions. I will give Jay that Eagles game, he played fantastic. That's what you get with Jay, a great game and a boneheaded game the next. We would be division leaders if we had Chicago's defense.

  • guest

Ok no one is happy when we lose, but “come on man” don't be a trollodyte. McD has a horrible GM “helping” him, our defense in 2008 was the worst in our history…not even Parcells could fix that in 2 years. Why not give a coach who's players love him a least a standard 3 years?

  • areferee

    I-Man,

I appreciate your article and I honor your Bronco loyalty and I share in it, but when you state that the fans are “demanding perfection”, you are missing what I believe is much of the sentiment that is being posted on these pages.

I speak only for myself, but when I call for a new administration, or I am critical of our defensive performance, it is because I seek only what we have been promised…hard effort, improvement and an ability to learn how to adapt to the competition. I believe we are getting none of the above.

Very few of us on these pages are expecting that we should be 11-0 right now, but with all of the misdirected personnel decisions and embarrassing performances resulting in scandal and a 3-8 record, our disenchantment is not unrealistic, nor is it a call for perfection.

We have grown to expect that only from YOU. :-)

  • AKfan

2008 defense gave up 28 points a game. 2010 defense is giving up 29.4 points a game. Some of his players love him. I doubt that Cutler, Marshall, Shefler, Hillis love him.

  • guest

Cutler marshall and shef blew a home game chance to be in the playoffs to the Bills!!!!! not one of them stepped up in 2008, not just the defense. So honestly who cares about them? Hillis was a mistake…guess what every coach makes mistakes. We are as a team looking better in the red zone than we ever did in 2008 despite having a worse run game…all I am saying is give the guy another year to finish rebuilding this team. He hasn't lost the players despite the poor season, that alone earns the coach some kudos in my book.

  • kevindow

First of all name calling is rude, we are all Broncos fans here. Second Elway didn't produce any 1000 yard rushers, alex gibbs and zone blocking did. It's a proven fact that no zone blocking team has won a superbowl since the Broncos did. Rules have changed, and defenses have learned to adapt to it. A power blocking scheme might not produce big rushing numbers, but I like the concept of having bigger stronger guys that won't wear down towards the end of the season, and can pass protect better.
Thirdly, McD is a proven coach. He has paid his dues. Maybe if all the bandwagon fans out there stopped crying the sky is falling and actually went to games to cheer and support this team, maybe this team and its coach would have a lil faith in themselves and play better…….. and thats todays word

    The moral of the

  • guest

Why does this feel like a lynching with “fans” foaming at the mouth? Put down the pitch forks and torches for a second and think about it. Why do most rookie head coaches that do succeed, do it for a different team than they were hired for? Shanny is a perfect example. Lack of patience, are you going to step up and admit you blew it if we can McD and he has success for a different team? What if the Giants canned Parcells after his first 2 years with a 12 of 19 record?

  • Jarellano_25

You're right, Cutty didn't get the Bears the record by himself, but aren't we all in agreement that WINS are what a QB is judged by? That's all I heard when Denver traded for Orton who “just wins”.

  • herc_rock

McD better start chasing those ghosts.

Unless that guy somehow qualifies for federal whistleblower status, he had better root his ass out and get him gone. You cannot operate effectively with someone selling you out to the league and the media at every turn

  • Dont sound like a Chiefs fan

HE ships off everyone that doesn't like him. To the people that say we are bandwagoners that are against McDaniels, I call you complacent and a follower. True leaders win and don't except losing. True fans never want there teams to be sub par, or in our case BELOW SUB PAR. Grow a backbone and be a leader and notice that a change needs to be MADE! I believe as a fan, that Bowlen is the best owner in the league, and doesn't deserve to be represented in the way McDaniels has. Denver wasn't known for cheating and controversy. With McD that is all we have along with LOSING!

  • Dont sound like a Chiefs fan

This isn't the 80's or a respectable coach

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

I appreciate your critique, always, but maybe I can clear some things up:

Mike Nolan came to Josh McDaniels with the Miami Dolphins proposal and McDaniels gave Nolan the option, but Nolan was basically cut out of disloyalty.

As for what has been done on the defense: Robert Ayers was drafted, Brian Dawkins, Jamal Williams, Andre Goodman, Justin Bannan all signed, Joe Mays traded for… I also like the drafting of Perrish Cox and Syd'Quan Thompson, not to mention Cassius Vaughn. To me it's just like the pieces don't fit just yet.

As for falling forward, 21 points in the fourth quarter is falling forward.

As for Smith, yes, he has interceptions, but he still can't tackle and breaks when the game is on the line.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

I am counting myself amongst the fans, I know that we'd more than likely be in a similar situation, but I really wanted Steve Spagnuolo to be our head coach simply for the reason that he would give an immediate boast to our defense.

When we went this off-season and I heard rumors about Wink I was fuming. I called for Denver to bring in Wade Phillips as soon as he was fired. I still think they should bring him in, in January or February (as early as is legally allowed). In the back of my head I think it must be a defensive coach (if not coordinator) who is leaking all of this information to Fox & Yahoo.

At this point though, knowing and seeing what we've seen would you come and take over the Broncos as a defensive coordinator? I'd need something pretty potent in my vodka.

I meant for my post to be more of a compliment to the fans, as opposed to a critique. So I am sorry if it came off as anything other than that, but thank you very much for your compliment (it was very humbling).

  • TheTroglodyte

I respectfully disagree that was doing anything for the defense. Drafting an unproven one hit wonder out of college and filling the rest of the squad with nobody's and veterans that should be retiring is exactly what Al Davis has done for the last 20 years and we all know how that has worked out.

I would also say that Nolan left because McD is a control freak (which is obviously why Wink was hired as the D-Coord too, because he can be controlled).

I still dig your optimism though Ian :D

  • tss59

I am an optimist too I believe there have been some attempts through free agency to find a D lineman to come here and make the difference but it hasn't happened but you never know there have been more than a few cast offs who get there game back like a Seymore or Pryce when he went to Ravens. Nolon was good but that fizzeled and once being a Head coach maybe there was a clash we don't know for sure. One more year of McD is not going to doom this franchise there are pieces and flashes on both sides of the ball maybe with some good drafts and move in free agency it will come together boycotting the team will not help if you have tickets and don't want to go give them to some kids organization I am sure they would be appreciated

  • troyn

Sorry Ian, I dig your stuff usually and like you will support the team always. But……. There is no such thing as falling forward in a home loss to the Rams. The Raider's game, Spygate 2, and now the Ram's loss have left me with no faith in McD.

  • kerry

whoa whoa whoa. so Kyle Orton has a winning record in Chicago and its because he is a great player but Cutler does it and none of it is because of him?? cant have it both ways.

  • areferee

The compliment is deserved, the critique, perhaps not. Point well taken, the fans DO expect a lot, but considering the decades of support and the records the loyal fans have set, they deserve more than what has been dished up in recent years.

Spag is clearly a good one, and Wade would be at home as the DC.

(BTW: We ALL need a little extra in the Absolut 90)

  • denverfanindallas

i like josh. i think he is in over his head. but as a Type A, fiery head coach, yeah i like him. he needs to win some freaking games. but i thought i was the only one behind this guy.

we have two options. 1) be miserable every week from here to 16, or 2) understand that we are not the greatest team in the nfl but can play with anyteam on our schedule. Bowlen is not firing MCD, and I'm pretty positive about that for the rest of the season and almost as positive for next year. His offense works, the players respect him and they know how he wants to run things. (if that were not true, more than the few that have demanded out would be gone)

Thanks Ian for a positive message on a blog who's comment section looked like an obituary. My Tebow jersey came in yesterday, and it is ORANGE! We get the Chiefs, Raiders, and San Diego all again. We don't have to search for something to prove, that's pretty clear already!

    go broncos

  • BroncoMan24

I am not sure I agree on the defense being that bad. It is now yeah, but I think it could take a couple of key DL to fix the problem. Yeah we are aging in a lot of areas, but I think a lot of people would be surprise how much a pass rush from the front 4 could change things. Having to constantly blitz our LBs works for awhile, but eventually teams start to figure. With the injury to Doom, that has even made it worse for us.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

I really don't want to argue about the differences between Cutler and Orton, but if one can't declare Orton the better quarterback clearly then it's not worth even putting up an argument over.

Even without being a “winner” Orton is having a much better season than Cutler other than the fact that Orton's defense is less than impressive.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

In the last 20 years Al Davis has been to the Super Bowl only two times less than the Denver Broncos… =)

Nolan presented McDaniels with the offer from Miami, there was a ***** measuring contest and Nolan was given the option to leave. He left, McDaniels ego wouldn't allow him to beg Nolan to stay.

I think that McDaniels would do very well giving up the defense. Yet, don't forget, he started out as a secondary coach, that's how he broke in.

I just don't see anyone in the NFL joining the Broncos as a defensive coordinator, that's why I am so vehement and adamant about pursuing Wade Phillips… Either him or a college coach who has a really respective defensive team this season. Wink's either not it or he's not able to do it.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

troyn- to me the Rams were the better team, not even just record wise.. Any team that you give a 21-7 run towards in run quarter, that's showing that you're falling forwards.

I have been screaming for McDaniels to apply the two minute offense the entire game. This is Peyton Manning's success, I think a veteran coach may point to the fact that most of that time the defenses are in a prevent type defense, but what are they going to switch to after a team hits them up for three 15+ yard gainers in a row.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

I guess I will just continue onto this article with a post and something a bit personal to me. I have worked with owners of companies, a lot of them and I will talk about one specifically, for the last ten years everything he says is, “Urgent,” or “Immediate,” or of the, “Utmost importance,”… You get tired of hearing it, the boy can only cry wolf so many times before you become immune, you will work your ass off the first couple of times (6-0 in 2009), but there has to be a balance and eventually you start realizing you can break your ass every week, but he's just going to expect more the next week.

So you start doing less than you can, so the next week when you do better it's actually good enough. You peak and fail on purpose, McD can't always just be trying to, “Just win a effing game.” Even William Stephen Belichick coached the Cleveland Browns before he got a shot at coaching the Patriots.

Then again, wth do I know, I wasted all my PhD years becoming the best OBGYN I could be, never got into Psychology much haha!

Hey im all for bad mouthing mcd for what hes done bad, but every last one of you is forgetting is that mcd IS NOT THE GM! he may of started things off badly with cut and marsh, but ultimately its not up to him to get rid of people, it's xzanders and ellis who have the final word and they are the ones responsible for cut, marsh, smith, hillis, shef, wiegman and the draft. mcd may have quite a bit of influence but in the end they put the stamp on it so they are the ones to blame for the perssonel moves. remember that xzanders is a new gm here in denver and maybe the wrong kind of gm. ultimately, bowlen needs to grow some balls and tell them all to get there shit together or they're gone!

Also, I know it's hard to admit it broncos fans, and i know it hurts, but jay cutler and brandon marshall were the bread and butter of our offence. cutlers about to go to the playoffs this year( even though most of that has to do with have one of the best defences in the league to help him) and marshall may not be pulling the same numbers he made here but he's still the same ol marsh. teams are double and triple teaming him which leaves the other revievers wide open. he will be one of the biggest reasons why the dolphins start to hit the playoffs every year. And to say that they weren't doing much while they were in denver is ignorant and shows how many of us broncos fans took it to heart when they left. The year before they left, in shannahans last season they produced the best offence, statisticly, in the nfl. cutler had a 96% passer rating and marsh was on his 3rd straight year of 100 receptions. all together they had the most passing yardage in the league. what was in question that year wasn't the offence but the defence, which had suspect for the previous 4 seasons. if we had kept cutler and marshall we were on our way to having the absolute best offence denver has seen since Elway! Bronco fans need to stop justifying their departures and realize that letting go of those 2 players was the single most stupidest decision in nfl history. It's very sad to see all of you bad mouthing them like they did something wrong when they were under contract here, cutler in particular had 3 more years left on his contract and because bowlen, xzanders, and ellis dont have the heart to tell them to sit down, shut up, and play ball we now have one of the worst teams in football. as bronco fans we need to admit this sad event being the teams fault and move on and hope the team can do something to get back what they had 2 years ago through the draft and free agency.

  • areferee

There's so much here that needs correcting…I kinda feel like…well, Josh McDaniels.

    Uh…

    I just don't have the strength…

  • Jarellano_25

Cmon man really? You see how Orton gets his stats. He waits until the opposing team goes into a prevent then picks up the garbage yards. Have we seen him come back from behind even once to win a game? ( Don't say Cincy because that was a miracle ). It's time to put the Cutler comparison to bed because he is gone and not coming back. The only QB subject we should be discussing is whether it's time or not to give Tebow some starts.

  • TheTroglodyte

Isn't that a problem that the Rams were the better team? Steve Spag took a 1 – 16 team in 2008 that was SO BAD it went 1 – 16 in 2009 and they are already better than us. Obviously it doesn't take years to turn around a bad franchise. Miami took a losing record, overhauled the team and became AFC East champions. The Jets brought in all sorts of key players, coaches (and kept the good ones in tact) and turned into a power house the same year with a rookie QB.

We may have blown them out but the Chiefs are a better team than us and they were absolutely horrible a few years ago up until last year.

Even the Raiders who have screwed up every draft for the last 10 years are playing better than us.

The Ravens, Falcons both turned things around in 1 year too.

I gave McD all the support in the world through year 1. It's painfully obvious this team is FAR worse than last year though so why would anyone want to give him a 3rd year?

Seriously can you even tell me what defense we run? No, you can't because we run a 3-4 / 4-3 hybrid that doesn't have a name because it shouldn't exist.

Can you tell me what kind of blocking scheme we run? No, you can't because we flop around all over the place between zone and power blocking.

Can you tell me what promising talent we have to develop on defense? MAYBE Cox and Ayers. Neither of our young safety's can play two games in a row so we have maybe 2 players that have a chance to be good.

Can you tell me what young talent we have on offense? No, you can't because D. Thomas is too busy being ran on kickoffs so he gets injured instead of used to grab jump balls so we have no idea what he can do because he can't develop. Eric Decker doesn't see the field, and Tebow is an f'ing mascot McD allows to go out once in a while for the fans.

What part of this team shows any promise what so ever? And please don't say Orton because it's blatantly obvious the stats are WAY off base. Take away Lloyds 30 miracle grabs and this team doesn't even outscore the Cards this year.

  • Olybronco

I agree with your comments. I am also a Coach McDaniel supporter. I like his team first approach and I think he still has the support of his players. I hope Mr. Bowlen will give McDaniels a full season next year and that some positive changes will be made with the defense. Go Broncos!

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

Are thirty grabs really a miracle? haha, I will get back to you in a bit on this, a lot to cover.

  • TheTroglodyte

lol the ones that Lloyd has made have been. I haven't seen those kinds of catches since the Lynn Swan highlights I use to watch as a kid.
