I am not much of a Dallas Cowboy fan, but this season who is, right?

With Sunday nights blowout 45-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers, Wade Phillips is undoubtedly on the hot seat and a move may be made as early as today.

Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones has said last week that Phillips will remain in place through the end of the season, but at this point something has got to give in Dallas.

If Pat Bowlen hasn’t burned the bridge, Denver needs Phillips back on the Broncos coaching staff. Not as a replacement to Josh McDaniels, but as his defensive coordinator.

It’s not insane and I’d hate to see Wink Martindale lose his job, but if Phillips is a free agent I implore Mr. Bowlen, bring in Phillips as quickly as possible and give him a salary.

Though the team’s defense may not turn around this season, it will over the off-season and nearly every defense that Phillips touches turns to gold.

He’s just not a head coach.

UPDATE: Phillips has been fired by the Cowboys.

I couldn't agree with you more on this Ian!!!

  • http://ehalseymiles.com E. Halsey Miles

I feel exactly the same way about Norv Turner and offense. Fantastic O coordinator. Not a head coach. Also in danger of getting fired.

  • Ejrubin

really not a bad idea at all. right now I think we are completely set for the future on the offensive side of the ball. The only area of question is the offensive line but i think they will become a more cohesive unit by the end of the year and start opening up holes. If they don;t though this will definitely need to be something that is considered. I actually really like our linebackers next year between DJ Ayers and Dumervil but we probably need one more. The real places that need to be drafted and signed are secondary and defensive line. I honestly believe that if we add impact players in those two areas we are a playoff team next year.

BTW, is this killing anyone else that Alphonso Smith has 5 ints with detroit, tyler polumbus is starting at left tackle for seattle, and hillis is absolutely tearing it up in cleveland

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

I hate this idea, I think Wink will come into his own over time. But you're entitled to your opinion Ian. :D

  • Danno

Ian…You read my mind…I meant to make the comment last week, but I have been too busy at work. I think Wink would be fine with his old job back. Make Lumpy our defensive coordinator…If McD's ego could handle it.

  • Ejrubin

i mean its hard to judge anyone coaching this defense because of the lack of talent and injuries. Next year it can be a very good defense with just a few good draft picks and free agent signings

  • John Odell

Nice post. I think Alphonso Smiths success in Detroit can be greatly attributed to their very aggressive d-line. They force quarterbacks into making a lot of inaccurate and unwise throws. Just imagine the amount of interceptions Bailey, Goodman and Cox would have if we had Suh and Vanden Bosch on our line. Not to mention a healthy Dumervil flying around the end. Hillis is really starting to hurt, but i still cant be too outraged at the organization about it since most of the leagues top backs might have been cut running behind this line the last couple years. Evaluating running backs is a crapshoot when you have that kind of perfomance upfront. Knowshon Moreno could be Terrell Davis for all we know, but he's always gonna look like a scrub if the line can't Ever let him at least get to the line of scrimmage without having to engage a defender. Much less cleanly getting to the second level. Inexperience is a bitch.

  • herc_rock

Screw Wade Phillips. We want Joe Collier!

  • jimery

Phillips is not coming to Denver. It doesn't make any sense, he isn't going to leave a 1-7 team that fired him and move over to a 2-5 team that hasn't got a chance in hell to do anything when he can just wait it out and see what is available in Feb. You guys are delusional at best.

  • Mobley

That is a horrible idea. The game has passed him by. Let's move forward please

  • AtomicLeo

This great defensive coach guided a unit that gave up 179 points the past month. No thanks.

  • Geoffhull03

Wade would be just another D-Coordinator. I'm not sure how many people read Harry Potter, but the Broncos D-Coordinator position is like being the Defense against the Dart Arts teacher

  • anthony33

The guy we need to go after at the end of the season in Dom Capers and give him one of those assistant head coach titles. He is far better the Phillips. Plus he could be the next head coach if McD can't turn the ship.

  • mobley

If we continue to be the team who changes defensive coordinators every year how can we ask the players to stay committed to us? We really are on the verge of becoming a joke to the rest of the NFL. I say let Phillips ride off into the sunset as a cowboy.

  • Ejrubin

I agree with your assessments of all three of those players. Running backs are extremely hard to evaluate and I believe 80% of them would succeed if put in the right situation. Also the defense's main problem is by no means the coordinators. Our defense wasn't that talented to begin with before injuries to our top two pass rushers. I really like McDaniels, I really do. I like how much he believes in character and that you need a team to win, but in the end you can't do it without talent and that is something Mike Shanahan always understood. You need the talent to win and right now we just don't have it on the defensive side of the ball.

  • adrenaline27

I would skip on Wade.. he is now damage goods. I don't care for the guy and his way of dealing with press. No wonder the Cowboys are 1-7 and got beat the way did. Jerry needs to hire someone and give the control up.. and not take it back after two years once the team starts to turn it around.

  • 12508

How about making Wade the GM. Xanders is the worst GM in the NFL. Wade cant do any worse.

  • Ejrubin

How about Mike Pettine, the Jets defensive coordinator? He has been working under Rex Ryan for a decade now and Rex clearly has the secret.

Ladies and Gentlemen! We have a Harry Potter reference, this is awesome.

  • mobley

The definition of insanity is repeating the same actions and expecting a different outcome. Have a little patience and let's see if Wink might pan out. Mr. Bowlen has to be smarter than Al Davis, right? And even Al had the patience to wait for Cable to prove himself.

  • Hope

Ya right the Broncos are a joke to the rest of the NFL already.

  • broncoinva9986

Bill Clinton would be a good coach. IM JUST sayin….(JK)

  • anthony33

Not a bad thought kent s. The problem is you're missing one key ingredient, Scott Pioli the Chiefs GM. With McD calling most of the shots he will never bring in two high caliber coaches that might actually know more than him. You only need to look at last year with Mike Nolan.

I still like Dom Capers. What he's done with the Packers after all the injuries they've had is proof just how important coaches are. Not that there is a chance in hell of getting him as a DC, but what about Capers as the head coach and Norv Turner as the OC. Keep Wink as the DC.

  • Simplistickhaos

Really? Dom Capers? Let's not forget that we had to send the last team he coached Gary Kubiak to fix that mess. As far as Wade Phillips, he won't come back after that horrible effort at head coach. Wink will be fine, not many d-coordinators would be good losing your top to linebackers in a 3-4 defense(not including all the other injuries).

  • Riverscanbl&wme

After watching the Steelers play week in and week out, I think getting one of Dick L's protege's would be a nice move. Man those guys can play defense.

  • Darwin

If Wink had talent to coach it would be a different story. No Doom, No Ayers, and retreads along the defensive line plus an aging secondary. You have to have difference makers on defense. The Jets have a fantastic secondary. The Steelers have the best linebackers. Baltimore has Ray Lewis. Denver needs to draft talent and develop it. Cox, Thompson, Bruton, Ayers, Woodyard, Thomas, and McBath all have good upside but they need studs now on each level.

  • 12508

GET RID OF THE GM. PROBLEM SOLVED.

  • gmen

    hehehehe. idiot

  • crazykid

While we're hiring Wade Phillips, lets give Dan Hawkins a chance too

  • ronster

Without wanting to sound disrespectful of his past work, Wade is used up now and ready for pasture. We need more penetrating thinking to better our team's performance than to call out for the expired (Phillips) or the premature (Tebow) choices.

  • anthony33

I stand corrected. While I was totally impressed with what I saw Sunday night, I did go back and look at Capers record as a HC and what he defenses did… no thanks.

  • 12508

Xanders reminds me of Isiah Thomas. NO CLUE!!!
