The Broncos continued to stay busy with their roster Tuesday, waiving offensive lineman Tyler Polumbus and being awarded tight end Kory Sperry off waivers from the Miami Dolphins. Earlier Tuesday, the club released linebacker Akin Ayodele.

Polumbus, a former CU Buff, spent two seasons with the Broncos and started in eight games in 2009. He originally filled in for the injured Ryan Clady at left tackle this offseason but was benched in favor of D’Anthony Batiste. With Clady returning and Batiste playing as many as three quarters in the preseason games (at both left and right tackle), Polumbus became expendable.

Sperry (6-4, 238) is a second-year player from Colorado State who participated in eight games (one start) for Miami as a rookie in 2009 and finished with three receptions for 31 yards (10.3 avg.) and one touchdown.

Sperry’s college production boasted 141 receptions for 1,763 yards (12.5 avg.) with 20 touchdowns for the Rams.

It wouldn’t surprise us to see Mike Shanahan‘s Redskins stake a claim in Polumbus, but he just wasn’t as good a fit in Josh McDaniels‘ system, as evidenced by the team’s struggles down the stretch when Ryan Harris went down last year and Polumbus’ movement down the depth chart this offseason. Press release after the jump.

BRONCOS ANNOUNCE SEVERAL TRANSACTIONS

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos announced several transactions Tuesday, including the assignment of tight end Kory Sperry off waivers from Miami.

The club also released linebacker Akin Ayodele and waived offensive lineman Tyler Polumbus.

Sperry (6-foot-4, 238 pounds) is a second-year player who participated in eight games (1 start) for Miami as a rookie in 2009 and finished with three receptions for 31 yards (10.3 avg.) with one touchdown. He was originally signed by San Diego as a college free agent on May 1, 2009, from Colorado State University.

He caught 141 passes for 1,763 yards (12.5 avg.) with 20 touchdowns during his career with the Rams. An All-Colorado selection as a senior at Pueblo County High School in Pueblo, Colo., Sperry was born on April 10, 1985.

Ayodele was signed by the club as a free agent during the offseason. Polumbus, who was originally signed by Denver as a college free agent in 2008 from the University of Colorado, played 31 games (8 starts) in two seasons with the club.

Adam schefter is reporting that Tyler Polumbus is now employed by the New York Subway System as a turn-style on the lower east end.

ZING!!! MTA benefits are no joke though, those guys can make a good $80K a year.

Five cuts and one signing… Broncos don't need to cut down to 75 players until August 31st, they currently sit at 75 with the signing of Sperry (that's only if you include Darrell Reid and Ryan Clady as spots on the roster).

So if you think about it, what Denver's doing is pretty decent. Giving those 75 maximum opportunity for exposure and reps from now through September 4th (the deadline for the 53 man roster). They've all got an extra week basically.

Read where Polumbus was picked up for his zone blocking ability and did not really fit into a power blocking scheme.

Where does Clady fall then? Will he make it in McD's system? I know that sounds rediculous, but stranger things have happened… know what I mean.

  • steeplebomb

No joke. My uncle had a friend who worked with them and made (he claimed) six figures by working overtime/holiday. Anyways, the Sperry pickup seems perplexing. Word is this guy can't really block and wouldn't be a very versatile TE in a pro system. Not to mention he played with the Rams. (CU fan here). From what I read, his strengths remind me of tony Scheffler. Versatile receiving threat but can't block. Not that it matters really. He probably won't make the team with Quinn and Graham, not to mention the preseason that Branson is having.

    Anthony 33,

Understand your thought process on that but the difference with Clady is he is 6'6 325 and a GREAT pass blocker. He has the size McDaniels wants plus he is by far a better pass blocker than run blocker. This is not to take away from his run blocking skills it's just hie pas blocking is that much better. This is a great thing when protecting a Q.B.'s blindside.

  • awesome, austin

Yeah but with the great new QB we are going to have….it will no longer be his blind side!

  • Preining

Adds depth if he make the cut if not he'd make a good on the practice squad playing the part of the pass catching TE. If he learns to block during his time there he could find his way into the TE rotation.

  • PAT

Shanahan picked him because he was fast and big and the best available when he was picking not because he was a prototypical zone blocker.

Clady is a traditional type blocker but faster then just about everybody his size. That's why he'll be the Broncos pro bowl tackle for years to come.

  • Preining

With a southpaw the left tackle moves to the right side. Not all left tackles could do it but Clady is so athletic and still young it will not be an issue.
