Broncos sign Syd’Quan Thompson

In a May that has seen a few draft picks being signed around the NFL, the Denver Broncos finally joined the rest of the league and have signed seventh round draft pick cornerback Syd’Quan Thompson.

In last April’s draft you’ll remember that the Broncos traded back into the seventh round to pick up Thompson and DE/OLB Jammie Kirlew out of Indiana. The Broncos gave up their 2011 fifth round draft pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for two seventh round picks for the honors of picking up the two players.

At Cal, Thompson also served as a punt returner following the departure of DeSean Jackson in 2008. NFL Draft Scout projected Thompson as a first or second round prospect and he was rated amongst many sources as one of the best corners in the league prior to the 2009 season.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Friday signed cornerback Syd’Quan Thompson, whom they selected in the seventh round (225th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft from the University of California. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Thompson (5-foot-9, 187 pounds) earned first-team All-Pacific-10 Conference honors during each of his final two years at California, where he set a school record by starting all 52 possible games during his four-year career.

He also set the school mark with 36 passes broken up in addition to posting seven interceptions (204 yds.), 257 tackles (166 solo) and 20 tackles for a loss (65 yds.) for the Golden Bears.

A three-time all-state selection at Grant High School in Sacramento, Calif., Thompson was born on Feb. 7, 1987.

    all I know is there is some serious competition going on at the cb postion with smith, cox, and thompson for the nickel and fouth cornerback spot. With this much depth in a passing league I hope this allows us to bring the blitz and get doom some more sack, pay the man!

    cant be any worse then Elphonso Smith. at least this guy has some speed. i wouldnt be the least bit surprised if Smith doesnt make the team.

    I'm not willing to call McDs draft(s) busts, but he has yet to show any practical savvy. I don't really care when his picks sign, as long as they don't hold out. He now has 5 first round picks in two years (I count Smith since he unloaded a 1st rounder to get him), I hope we see flashes from them soon.

    I like Thompson on special teams and I know that he's not getting in there on returns during quarterback camp thus far. I think the man that takes the reigns from DeSean deserves a spot on my team any day.

    That being said, I fully expect Perrish Cox to be the man in that department, but think Thompson will give him a push.

    40's don't mean anything. There is about a .20 second deviant between the fastest and slowest recorded time and it has NOTHING to do with how fast someone runs with the pads on.

    Some scouts had Cox as a first or second rounder and everybody said he was a steal in the 5th so it'll be interesting to see if he competes with Goodman for the #2 CB.

    Secondary definitely has a mix of young and old so we'll see what happens when they battle it out in camp.
